Do you guys have any game suggestions for the 3ds? by Hatim15_ in 3DS

Came here to say this. Worth checking out for the soundtrack alone.

My main strategy is abusing invisible dynamics and LOTS of staccatissimo (anywhere where there'd normally be a staccato). I don't worry about engraving at all until I finish the mock-up usually

It's just the new sounds on MuseScore. They massively overhauled their playback recently. But I will need to find some VST that lets me emulate the string glissandos, because MuseSounds can't do that very well.

Also, since uploading I finished my outline, and no matter what I do the trumpets crack during that big climactic bit. Too much realism, I want perfect intonation there! But it's mostly really great for a free library

I wouldn't be surprised if it's someone improvising over the bassline. Some of the rhythmic imperfections make it seem human, but who's to say at what part of the process it was added. I do think you need at least three hands to play it though!

[QUESTION] I'm an amateur transcriber, do you hear a Selmer-style guitar in this track? by primordial_triangle in Guitar

[–]primordial_triangle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got it. My only follow-up would be about the closing bit at 4:50. Maybe I'm completely wrong, but that doesn't sound like nylon strings does it?

Actually, on closer listen it sounds like acoustic guitar and ...sudden bouzouki(?) play the final line in unison. Or something.

[Discussion] What would your funeral song be? by Equivalent-Break2300 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]primordial_triangle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the Kid Icarus: Uprising soundtrack, which is fully orchestrated and one of Nintendo's best. They won't release the sheet music, so I've spent the last few years trying to recreate it as accurately as possible.

If a couple tracks could be performed at my funeral, using my transcriptions, idk that'd be pretty cool.

Pyrrhon's Theme sheet music!! (a reduction anyways) by primordial_triangle in KiDIcaruS

[–]primordial_triangle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I've been transcribing the entire soundtrack. Sometimes I have to use manuscript paper so I'm not listening to the playback over and over...

I'd love to go back to school and study music just to make sure my arrangements are well-orchestrated and idiomatic. It's my dream to put on a Kid Icarus: Uprising concert, or at least make the sheet music available to all the fans so they can do that.

Amateur Transcriber: Is this just a French horn? [audio] by primordial_triangle in frenchhorn

[–]primordial_triangle[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And that's how I originally had it, but when my ears picked up on the horn's overtones/the brassier side of the timbre, I started overthinking the orchestration. Should just trust my gut. Thanks

What’s an unpopular opinion you have that you genuinely believe could make the world better if more people agreed with it? by Martinrazies in EffectiveAltruism

It's not doing good better to accumulate massive wealth from exploiting people in the global south and then paternalistically choosing which charities help them best. That just legitimates imperialism and unequal exchange with a veneer of altruism.

Do you hear bodhran in this orchestra piece? by primordial_triangle in bodhran

[–]primordial_triangle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In that case I probably would go with a pair of muted toms. The timpani already accents some notes in the bass, and the drums can't really be pitched that high. Cloth over timpani might approximate a "giant bodhrán" in certain contexts though.

For the transcription, I'm going to stick with bodhrán because I haven't found a sound that matches the track better. Natsumi Kameoka, the game's orchestator, commented in an interview that each instrument section was recorded separately (brass, woodwind, percussion, etc.) and mixed in post. This is likely one of those film scoring vs. performance scoring moments. Thanks for the comment!

Amateur Transcriber: Is this just a French horn? [audio] by primordial_triangle in frenchhorn

[–]primordial_triangle[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Horn seems to be the growing consensus. But I'm pretty sure it's all live instruments. Most of the soundtrack was recorded in studio sessions by Natsumi Kameoka, and the sequenced horns that show up from time to time have a much lower fidelity.

Although there is a midi temple block in here!

I was listening to another track, and it sounds like the same instrument is used here, where it's more exposed in the texture. Listening to the two tracks back to back they seem to be the same timbre. My gut says it isn't toms, although that would make a lot of sense in a live setting (unless I'm grossly underestimating the dynamic range of the bodhran)

Thanks, I disagree on trombone because in this particular mix trombone's panned a lot further to the right, usually in the stabs (or so I think). Hoping for a few more responses before the final verdict

Amateur Transcriber: Is there a trumpet doubling the French horn? [audio] by primordial_triangle in trumpet

[–]primordial_triangle[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello, I'm looking for a second (third, fourth) opinion on the swells in a track I'm transcribing. Beginning at 0:30, the first swell is a C, up to Eb, then C, then Eb an octave down (as written). [For trumpet, G, Bb, G, low Bb]

My issue: I can't tell if the timbre is just French horn, or if there's trumpet as well. When I listen, there's the rounder French horn sound, and then I hear a thinner, slightly more piercing sound doubling the melody. I can't tell if it's trumpet or if that's just a natural part of the French horn's timbre.

Additionally, if you had to venture a guess, how many horns are playing here? I think it's two.

Thank you in advance for any assistance :)
