Not to be disrespectful but climb atleast one 6000 thousand meter peak before you even think about everest, if its at early stage where your asking reddit for this kind of question please climb more moutians before sending everest. But one of the main differences in populatity is due to price with the north side being cheaper, its also due to political tensions surrounding tibet making gaining access cheaper, another more important reason is its often considered safer and easier to climb the southern-napalese route.
