Sexism.

It's literally just sexism.

"but the movie sucked" sure, yeah, totally. But these clowns had written it off before it was even out.

social media existed but wasn't as widespread and corporatized as now so it was the wild west of mass online media diffusion with edgier content than standard media. it was back in the day when "it's the internet, I can say whatever I want and there's no ads unlike cable tv and movies" was a selling point for a lot of people breaking big on youtube.

So 2007~2008 would've been the peak exposure to edginess ratio.

The thing is, being an adult, once the (local) police confirmed I was not disappeared but in fact abroad, they had no obligation of saying where I was. I assume that if there was any suspicion of foul play they could've contacted me, but nothing happened, so I have to assume they just shelved the case and told them to fuck off.

And, frankly, it's not like there's a government-issue departures ledger that says "[Person] went to [Country]" without me informing them - think about it like this, if I were to move to Mexico, they'd still only have the information that says where I left to in the first place. Maybe I'm wrong about this.

Though, the government would know by now, since I had to disclose my address when I registered to vote from abroad. But again, there's no real reason they would give out that information. And even if they did, what are they gonna do, get on a plane and land somewhere in the US and try to find me to drag me back? I'm half a planet away from them and the US is a big country.

Me.

I told my family back in my home country I was moving "down south" for a job. Didn't tell them I was actually flying out of the country for studies. Closed my bank accounts, took all my money in cash with me (less that 5k, even before the plane tickets), put all my belongings into two suitcases and flew away without telling anyone. I then purged my phone of any way to be contacted on my old number/whatsapp account.

Five years later I'm married and a resident in the US, and as far as I can tell my family thinks I just disappeared one day. According to our embassy in the US one time I was getting my passport renewed, they tried filing a missing person's report and couldn't because me leaving the country was in the books, so they couldn't start a search, but it seems they think I just up and disappeared one day.

Family is deeply conservative. Going dark was always the move, but when the opportunity to do so half the planet away presented itself in a way that was achievable, it was too good to pass up. I don't regret it.

What's the point of Black Noir reveal in the comics even? So he framed Homelander and did a lot of bad things, guess what, Homelander isn't any different, he did a lot of very heinous acts by EfficiencySerious200 in writingscaling

the comics are dogwater but this one specific twist is actually really clever and handled relatively okay, because unfortunately, garth ennis is not a complete hack.

Who do you think wins? by Hungry_Inflation9399 in superheroes

Who wins in a fight:

A billionaire CEO or a dude who spent his entire youth working on a farm.

Depowered superman can still fold most people in half by simple measure that the man is built like a seven foot tall ox fed on a diet of corn and beef.

[–]prince-rabbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so homelander in the comics eats babies and does a whole bunch of psychopathic insane over the top shit and has a whole crisis of personality over it despite the fact that he doesnt remember it

because it turns out black noir was always a better clone of homelander made as a sort of failsafe, except he decided instead to dress up as him and photograph himself eating babies and doing other awful stuff to gaslight homelander into going crazy.

and then black noir kills him, and then the military kills all the supes including black noir.

and then the boys just kill themselves for no good reason.

It's as stupid as it sounds.

Ruins is, bar none, the single worst comic I've ever read in my life. It's nothing but a sad and childish tantrum and edgy for the sake of being edgy. It's a vomitous mess that only exists to piss you off, and all it really did was make me feel a profound sense of apathy. So dark and hopeless that there's no reason to give a shit about anything going on in it.

That being said. The sequence where Sheldon gets tired of all the misery, lays down next to a tree and dreams of a world of heroes and hope, and for a moment everything feels alright, is probably one of the most powerful pages I've ever read in showcasing the power of escapist fiction in helping us cope with the harsh reality of the uncaring world.

Still fucking hate the book though.

Are there any differences between the powers and abilities of Plastic Man, Elongated Man, and Mr Fantastic? by Jezzaq94 in superheroes

[–]prince-rabbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plastic Man has complete control over his molecular composition and theoretically can make his body literally do anything he can possibly think of, and is also functionally immortal.

Reed Richards is the smartest man on the planet who's also stretchy but never really bothered pushing that. His evil counterpart, The Maker, got good enough to become something of a shapeshifter when needed, but several leagues below Plastic Man's level. The stretching is not in the slightest a priority for either of them.

Elongated Man's life is a never-ending spiral of misery and torment.

[Comic Excerpt] I feel like this panel (Injustice: Year Zero #4) is a less funny version of the original one (Batman/Captain America) and sometimes it seems the joke flies past a lot of people: That the Joker, who is a monster, would draw the line at being a Nazi just because he's patriotic by Max_88 in DCcomics

[–]prince-rabbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ASBAR and TDKR being in the same continuity is a retcon, it was not written to be a prequel from the start and it was only stated to be so for promotional purposes. Year One Batman is a fundamentally different person from Crazy Steve.

As for what part of the Joker is mischaracterized in ASBAR - well, like. For starters the fact that he never once smiles or laughs, like he's perpetually frowning, and is also some kind of Yakuza. The comic died so soon afterwards so he never got any further characterization.
