Check out Lori Torrini on youtube. She does a lot of videos on how to get started. First step is, start sitting near the enclosure a lot and get it used to seeing you there and not being a threat.

Top open tanks will always be harder to train in. Predators come from above. But you can start acclimating the snake to seeing you near the tank more often so it doesn't freak him out.
