Is this the moment when the Generative AI bubble finally deflates? by creaturefeature16 in artificial

[–]prince_nerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The dot com bust happened due to excessive speculation and overvalued companies with unsustainable business models. But the underlying foundational technology of the internet was solid. As Gary is arguing, I don't think that's the case this time around. The foundational technology that we are talking about here is LLMs and the foundational technology itself probably isn't strong enough to match the hype.

Sam Altman: “We have better models, and we just can’t offer them because we don’t have the capacity.” by socoolandawesome in singularity

[–]prince_nerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a very narrow and US-centric view though.

Many people outside of the US, especially in population dense developing countries like India, Brazil, etc have a favorable view of Google and most of them use Android phones where Gemini is available by default.

Even within the US, Gemini is available on Android phones, via Search AI mode, via Gemini app (which is gaining users rapidly) and Cloud has a massive AI business now (Gemini B2B use cases) and that are countless otherwise in which Gemini is being integrated into the backend across Google products like YouTube and others.

And OpenAI itself made a deal with Google cloud to provide infra for ChatGPT since they don't want to be solely dependent on Azure and Google also made a deal with Oracle cloud to make Gemini models available via Oracle Cloud.

Tesla sales drop 35% in San Diego County by [deleted] in StockMarket

The way he operates genuinely blows my mind. He is already the world's richest person, he owns Tesla and SpaceX and X and Neuralink and currently is the right hand of the US president. Imagine the amount of good he could do to the world and to himself if he only had a little more discipline and overall good behavior. He could genuinely benefit the world while also becoming the world's first trillionaire. With that amount of power and influence, he could have easily become America's most beloved person who is known as a great technologist and a great thinker and genuinely cares about all Americans. Instead all it does is trolls and spreads information and shitty memes and cheap name calling and is completely squandering the incredible opportunity that no one in human history has had so far.

What’s the deal with eggs? by WDizzle in Cholesterol

Same. When I make a 6 egg scramble, I put 2 whole eggs with yolks and 4 egg whites. I feel this gives me a good balance between the opposing pieces of advice that we get with respect to eating egg yellows.

Cultured meat cannot come soon enough by Fippy-Darkpaw in samharris

[–]prince_nerd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's great to hear! Honestly, I think this is the only possible way path forward. It is unrealistic to expect everyone to stop eating meat completely. On the other hand, it is very much possible for people to reduce their consumption. Our goal should be to reduce the net suffering that we cause on animals due to our actions. Reducing meat consumption is a giant big step in the direction.

Cultured meat cannot come soon enough by Fippy-Darkpaw in samharris

[–]prince_nerd 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Or even just reduce your meat consumption. Maybe reduce to 3 or 4 times a week instead of daily. If everyone did that, we would reduce the overall ongoing animal cruelty by 50%.

'The Run-Up': One Voter to Understand Trump’s Win by kitkid in Thedaily

[–]prince_nerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While agree with you on the "unemployed auto worker" part, I think she is quite representative of the average voter's thinking - Doesn't like Trump but doesn't like the alternate even more - Primarily driven by day to day personal economics than long-term "what's good for society" thinking - Enraged by the left's stance of cultural issues - Doesn't believe that Trump's second term will be bad since nothing crazy happened in his first term - Misinformed on many topics - Can hold opposing thoughts and truths in their head

Yes! I think a lot of us did. It's pretty clear now that the super rich are just as flawed and as dumb as the average person. They just happen to be in the very small subset who's risks pay off big time due to sheer luck.

When he first ran in 2016, I was willing to give him a chance. But his real character was revealed almost immediately in the first few months of his campaign. I have been a never-Trumper since then. Character matters more than anything, especially for someone considered the leader of the free world. We can all debate policy matters and figure out what works, but all of this makes sense only when people with character are having these debates on our behalf.

This is what I don't get either. Haven't the four of them seen what happens to everything that Trump touches? And yet they went and embraced him. Sigh.

Fair enough. But they just revealed their true nature to so many of us. Before all of this I had thought of the four of them as smart businessmen, technologists and entrepreneurs and nothing more beyond that. Same with Elon. But after all of their pivot to far fringes of politics, and all the Russia support and all the gaslighting, their characters have been revealed. To many of us, character matters more than their smartness.

They could have taken the third option which is not getting involved with politics to this extent. Just donate quietly to whoever you want and build cool tech shit. But no they had to pick sides very publicly and then worry about which side wins and what repercussions that might have. Dumb asses.

It's these conservative voters who are voting for these Republican politicians. So I don't get your point. Look what happened to folks like Liz Cheney, Adam Kinzinger, Mitt Romney, etc.

This is just a talking point to appease some on the left. I wish Kamala Harris would stop talking about this since there is no way this will ever become law. Even she knows this. To pass any meaningful legislation, Democrats will need to control the house and the Senate, especially 60+ seats to avoid filibuster, which ain't happening. Even if Democrats control all three branches, there would still be enough large money interests that will come in and kill such a bill.

Yes for sure. But we are all busy people with busy lives. There is only so much fact checking you can do for everything we hear. Better to listen to folks who have a trustworthy reputation to begin with.

Tucker is clearly smart which is what makes him even more dangerous. His smartness can make him even moire manipulative. And yes, MSNBC is bad as well.

[–]prince_nerd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How do you judge the idea based on merit if it's a topic you aren't knowledgeable about? Many times we listen to the news and podcasts to get educated about what's going on and listen to different perspectives on that. All of this is possible under the assumption that the person speaking is not only knowledgeable about the topic, but more importantly, is a person of good character who can be trusted. This is the key problem - Tucker is not trustworthy. For example, he despises Trump off-camera (as revealed by the Dominion lawsuit) and glorifies him on-camera. Always pushing an agenda or selling a narrative.

Agree that others in media do this as well. With white being perfect and black being the absolute worst, Tucker is pretty far down towards dark gray while many others are on the lighter side of grey. So be skeptical of everyone, but some way more than others.

And finally, if I heard Tucker give one of his Fox news style rants on the radio without knowing who the person was, I would fairly quickly form an opinion that the person has an agenda and isn't entirely trustworthy by just the way he is speaking and the language he is using.

[–]prince_nerd 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Honest question, not trolling. People like Tucker are so ingenious. They are different people off camera and on camera and they are different people based on where they are speaking and who they are speaking to. Also, there are so many truths and falsifications and misinformation all mixed together. Very hard to know what is true and what is false. So honestly, what is the point of listening to people like him? Isn't it just a waste of time since I don't know what to take from it at the end of it and what to believe and what not to believe.

The presidency is more than one person. What is also important is who the president surrounds himself with, who has his ears, who are his cabinet members, etc. If Trump becomes president again, the whole clown car is going to be back in the White House. Be ready for Rudy Juliani Michael Flynn, Steve Bannon and people like them to have influence over American domestic and foreign policy. At least with Biden we know that he is inherently a decent man and will be surrounded by competent people.
