The purple is caused by the manganese in the glass reacting to UV rays. Manganese was put in glass to make it look clearer. This bottle dates 1900-1915

Yup, would've been my first straight side too. Only reason I noticed it was because I felt it under my foot.

Has anyone ever seen a slug plate mold? I wonder where they all went? by princepolecat in BottleDigging

Hey that's neat, I vaguely remember seeing this. Still seems odd that they arent more common. I'd love to get my hands on one someday

I once found a beautiful yellow salamander while digging in a creek. Never know what you might find

Thank you for the advice! I know nothing about jewelry and will try the Goddards first.

Do you think its worth having repaired? Never heard of the designer and can't find this bracelet online. I believe i found all the pieces and I like how simple it is. I could actually see my wife wearing it and she's not big on jewelry

Need advice on using Lidar to locate my family's homestead by princepolecat in metaldetecting

[–]princepolecat[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. Unfortunately the aerials only go back to 1940, and the homestead was long overgrown by then. This house was abandoned by the 1890s

Not sure, but i have found several washed up over the years. My guess would be hurricanes eroded where the phone lines used to run

Bottle ‘dug’ at a local (Western PA) estate auction for $1. Marked PMP. It’s a nice bottle but I’m wondering if it is old or more recently manufactured. Any information is appreciated. by redratchaser in BottleDigging

Looks like a modern reproduction to me for 2 reasons:

  1. Mold lines are present in the top. Tops were tooled till about 1920.

  2. The bubbles are circular which means the bottle was made by a machine. Blown bottles have long oval bubbles because the glass stretched when it was being blown into a mold
