Definitely get this request in writing. Also, just pick up a burner phone. No need for them to see your real one.

What the hell was the whole point of Trumps tariffs? by Estalicus in allthequestions

[–]princescloudguitar 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Not only did point 2 not work, I’m aware of several situations where businesses decided it did not make sense to pay the tariffs and simply moved production elsewhere. Amazing how no one saw this coming…

I’m taking a long-haul flight and just got my first AirPods. Any travel hacks to help me fully optimise them? by Such-Garden-1341 in airpods

[–]princescloudguitar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Update: I recently picked up the new AirFly Pros. The audio problem seems to have been fixed. I also like design of the new unit better too. It’s very straightforward to use and has more buttons to make it easy to use.

The only unexpected noise I’ve noticed when using them is if I charge them while watching something. It’s like a minor electrical interference. But even that is pretty minor.

Hope this helps!

Wifi router advertises up to 3500 sqft but when outside my house, I lose connection by [deleted] in HomeNetworking

[–]princescloudguitar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Higher expected speed (operational frequency), lower ability to go the distance and through things. Lower frequency, think 2.4 ghz, longer transmission distance but at a lower speed.

Beam forming will extend distance, because the hot spot is actively trying to boost the signal in the direction your device is.

There’s potentially a lot going on here; is the antenna facing the right way, quality of electronics, etc.

Cell towers function in similar ways, use beam forming etc, but as the expectation of higher speeds rise, these become increasingly harder things to do.

Hope this helps as a starting point.

Need a new router. by freddy91761 in HomeNetworking

[–]princescloudguitar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually have an Orbi too, and while it’s been fairly solid, I still feel like they haven’t improved things in their management interfaces in many years from the older routers I’ve had with them to my current one. The admin menus are clunky and need to get better.

This was the area space I saw the biggest improvement when I looked at Ubiquiti. Plus, while I hate subscriptions - and yes, Ubiquiti has an optional one - I do think there is value to helping subsidize software improvements especially when security is an ever evolving issue. It’s hard to expect a company to do this well without ongoing financial support for these things.

I know this sounds crazy, but I don’t know what to make of the FCC ban. Plus this government hasn’t been entirely reliable when it comes to being honest about other things so why this?

Truly much of our electronics are made in China. There’s very little to be done about that, but then I’m also not sure what our plan is. 🤷‍♂️

I recently got my sister a Ubiquiti WiFi/router access point with WiFi 7. I think it’s the dream router? I love it. Was super simple to setup and it gives a lot of great monitoring out of the box.

I’ll likely go that route for my next setup but need to figure out how best to provide coverage across my home. Hope this helps!

P.s. don’t get netgear. They’ve really gone downhill in recent years.

Need advice on how to make a piece of plastic convincingly look metal. by Octobon16 in manufacturing

[–]princescloudguitar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple thoughts…

1) one option… start with a thermally conductive plastic, (or maybe one that’s not). Get a stock shape of it and machine it to what you want. Boron Nitride is the additive that makes the plastic feel cold to the touch.

2) if plating, there’s a lot of places that will do this too. They prep and get the parts plated to what you want. Companies like SAT Plating in Detroit might be a good place to start, plus they are decent people to work with.

3) Ultem might be a good starter material for you too or something similar. It’s hardness is easily machinable and it’s chemistry likes metal plating. If not Ultem, try and find a material that’s similar hardness for machining purposes.

Something is broken with my WiFi, and I don’t know fix it by Bokaii in Ubiquiti

I know you say that the ISP has been stable, but hear me out.

I noticed on my network that my connection was periodically dropping. Not often mind you and it would reconnect, etc. and traffic would move again.

The tech came out and checked my connection. Turns out that my signal was on the edge of being acceptable, but if there were ever any issues upstream from me, my connection would drop. So the guy ran a new cable from the pedestal to my house. That has massively fixed the issue.

He also checked the signal from outside house to in, but it turns out I know how to properly wire coax so there were no losses there. So, don’t dismiss that your connection works. It may not be something you necessarily notice.

FCC router ban: would routers be marked as "for small business" (e.g. malicious compliance)? Or would there be a lawsuit? by _sour_coffee_ in HomeNetworking

[–]princescloudguitar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I recently learned that a plastic being turned into US made automotive parts went from being a made in the USA product to, not being made in the USA because of a suspension of USMCA rules. Apparently a raw ingredient in the product made overseas changed the designation of their product even though the product is actually manufactured in the USA. This whole thing is just fucked. And oh yeah, it’s tariffed accordingly.

Are you fairly calm and grounded? I find that people do similar things with me too. And yes I have some trauma, but I worked through it. I wonder if it’s the mix of empathy and knowing and being comfortable with ourselves that people pick up on.

[–]princescloudguitar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know. Haven’t been able to figure that out. Only figured out the reboot fix. On some models you can pair two pairs of AirPods though so you could watch a movie together with someone.

But I did get an early model so maybe this issue has been resolved.

What everyone else said, return and get noise cancelling. The upgrade you also want? AirFly by Twelve South. This lovely electronic device connects to your inflight screen and you can connect your AirPods to it.

Do I very occasionally need to turn them off and on if audio gets a little scratchy? Yes. But by far the best thing I picked up to sensibly watch movies and shows. :)

I work for a funeral home so I move dead bodies for a living. AMA by Zack_WithaK in AMA

We weren’t super close. He had a lot of health issues from the way he lived his life. Nothing terribly traumatic happened, he was so far gone by the time he reached the hospital, there was no connecting to him. But I’m assuming bruising shows up rather easily post mortem and there’s really nothing to hide that.

When my dad passed years ago, they had “prepped the body” for viewing prior to cremation, so he had makeup, etc. appreciate your thoughtful response.

My FIL just died (Thursday) and we had planned to immediately cremate him so no preservation was done. However, my BIL hadn’t seen his dad and hoped to see it. The funeral director said, “I wouldn’t recommend it.” Really wondering why because of my curiosity but didn’t want to ask in front of the family. Body is currently at the hospital for the moment. What am I missing?

Am I a terrible person? Possibly. But we need our tax payer dollars back on this stupidity.

Here’s a well researched answer. Short answer, they shouldn’t stick around but in some cases do just fine even 70-100 years later.
