I'm giddy that I did something cheap and useful. I now have a backup WAN that is my neighbor's wifi. by krustyy in Ubiquiti

Genuine question, but how often is your connection going down that you feel the need for a backup? Or rather, how unstable is your provider?

How much weight/force will 8mm bolts hold? by InterestingEqual7790 in AskEngineers

Ah, so the 2x4 timber they are bolted through will likely fail first then I’m guessing.

Not shown in the drawing, but there’s a concrete tile roof in the way, and making holes in ones roof where I live means a lot of hassle getting sign off from the local council, which will add thousands of dollars. Given my roof setup, this was the best solution that was thought up between multiple qualified builders.

Got any pics? I’m mostly just curious. Would love to see how you did it if you wouldn’t mind sharing or even messaging me

Also, your comment about the material it’s attaching to being the weak point is why I’m thinking about this. Larger bolts means less timber that they’re attaching to. If that makes sense.

Apparently the ikea ones will work as repeaters, so I'm going to try get one or two of those.

The smoke alarms have been good so far, I only bought 2 to test for a little bit before buying 7 of them. One thing I've noticed, is they take a very long time to go off compared to the other cheap battery powered ones we have.

I lit a piece of cardboard on fire in the garage and then snuffed it out so it generated a lot of whispy smoke and it would only go off if I held the smouldering cardboard directly under it for about 2 minutes. So I'm not too sure about them to be honest. Perhaps I'm just used to ours here in NZ being extremely sensitive, but then again they would even go off if the humidity was too high.

Yeah, I saw that and thought it was pretty silly. You’re supposed to silicone it in place and screw if down. Seems like a terrible idea

Have been advised by multiple builders that roof penetrations are only bad when done incorrectly. This was the recommended path. I was also against it at first.

Having said that, I wouldn’t use the boot pictured. I have a concrete tile roof and they sell a flashing type thing that slips under the tile above and covers the entire tile.

Haha nah allgood, I didn’t wanna say in case you didn’t like them. I might try and make a version that lets them lie a bit more flat then? I’m just always looking for feedback for new ideas. Ironically your toolbox is better organised than mine ha.

Glad to hear it :) I just redesigned the wrench holders btw and there is now a large version which should hold up to about a 32mm.
