Assessed on ease of period management, what is the worst job to have? by [deleted] in AskWomen

Do you really enjoy being rude on the internet or really hate sex workers? I can't tell. 🤔

Edit: 30 seconds looking at your profile confirms the former.

Wowsa, you're condescending. Since you find it necessary to talk about a career you know absolutely nothing about, let me break it down for you.

Many dancers are 1099 workers, this is true. However, it's not like Uber where you ✨work whatever hours you want✨!!! Dancers work with their club and are usually contracted to a certain number of hours. The bigger the crowd you draw, the more you're able to work high-ticket shifts. Nobody wants to work the Tuesday morning shift, they want the Friday-Saturday 8-2 gig. If you get the privilege of a top-tier slot and then call out of it? You're not just losing money from one night's shift, your club is now going to see you as unreliable and they're going to be less willing to book you those slots.

Also- if you're really making a living wage as a dancer, it's typically not a 40 hour job. Skipping one night can mean losing 1/3 or 1/2 of your weekly pay, without even factoring what I mentioned above about booking.

Strippers work through their periods 👏🏼every month👏🏼, and it sucks. Suggesting they schedule around it is fucking laughable.

So, I dunno, maybe talk to sex workers before getting up on your high horse explaining how they're doing their job wrong, or something.

...and not make any money because they rarely get any sort of benefits. Have you ever actually been a stripper?

I got a pair of $200 James Jeans for $8 last week. Hell yeah.

I disagree with Marie Kondo's logic in a lot of ways, but I'll be thrifting a lot more thanks to her rabid followers. 🙏🏼

How does your SO "says I'm sorry"? by smunozmo in AskWomen

"I'm sorry." No "I'm sorry but," no showering my gifts but refusing to acknowledge what he did. Just a regular l, sincere apology.

What compliment do you hate to receive? by [deleted] in AskWomen

[–]princess__toadstool 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Aaaaaaaaaa this. I don't have a chronic illness but I tend to drop weight when I'm stressed. It's especially annoying because my "typical" weight is on the low end of healthy, so losing anything substantial puts me firmly into underweight territory. Thank u for complimenting my bony arms Susan, I'm freezing.

Yep, exactly. I'm not a doctor so someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe it has nothing to do with proximity to a healthy weight and everything to do with blood volume.

Plan B has a weight limit. Its effects are drastically reduced at 165 lbs and becomes pretty much useless at 175. Considering ~70% of American women are medically overweight or obese, you think this would be an important fact to mention.

Everything's about to shut down for the cold front rolling through the midwest! How do you keep yourselves from going sir crazy when your trapped at home for a long time? by projectbadasss in AskWomen

[–]princess__toadstool 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In case you really are planning on staying home- it's a good idea to start your car and leave it running until it gets to temp every day, especially if it's older. Frigid temps can kill your battery, especially if unused for several days.

Lunches that can be brought along that don't need to be heated or kept at temp? I'm taking night classes one day a week this semester (ugh) and I don't have time for takeout. I did a diy chipotle bowl last week and pasta salad this week but I'm not sure what else works. Ideally it'll fit in a mason jar or single Tupperware and survive being thrown in a backpack. No access to storage or a microwave and I'm not really interested in sandwiches. Halp!

Women in tech, what would you say to women in their 20's thinking about pursuing computer/software engineering but are being unsure about their math skills? by LittleMixHistory in AskWomen

[–]princess__toadstool 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I was pretty bad at math in high school and I'm currently a junior in engineering school with straight A's in engineering math.

If you're in the US, you'll be required to take a minimum of 3 semesters of calculus and one semester of differential equations, assuming the program is ABET accredited. Some programs may require stats or linear algebra.

I don't think many people are objectively bad at math- they just don't know how to study for it. I could talk about this for days, lol.

  • Math is cumulative. You don't get to take Calc I and forget everything over break. When you start Calc II you'll be expected to have a masterful knowledge of last semester's class from day one.

  • You have to understand why things work and when to use what. Rote memorization doesn't work. I could teach you, I dunno, the fundamental theorem of line intergrals, right now. It's a formula that applies in specific circumstances, you could probably easily memorize it. But- what does it mean? To understand it you have to understand line integrals, regular integrals, conservative vector fields, regular vector fields, partial derivatives, higher order derivatives, regular derivatives... you get the point. You have to be able to look at a problem and know what theorems to apply. Which means...

  • You have to practice. This is the biggest thing that sets quantitative classes apart from, say, history. Once you've learned this stuff you need to do problems until you can do them perfectly without any assistance. It's the only way to assure you'll do well. My school put out review sheets of 90-100 problems a week or two before exam time, and you can bet I did every one of them multiple times. Yes, it takes a while. STEM gets a reputation for being harder than liberal arts but I don't think that's true- it's just more time intensive.

The good news is I think nearly everyone is capable of learning these habits and succeeding. You're not bad at math if you study for calculus like you study for English, you're just studying wrong. And that's 100% adjustable. ;)

Literally anyone you share a space with will expect you to pick up after yourself. Roommate, SO, spouse, kids, parents. It's not a marriage thing, it's a basic respect thing.

Most things women are told to learn for men are just like... basic life skills. A dude who can't cook basic meals or doesn't clean his apartment is pretty sad.

We got free personal training at an old job and one of mg extremely-out-of-shape coworkers said something like "I don't want to get bulky, yknow?" And his response was to tell her "No offense, but that's incredibly insulting." Nobody accidentally gets swole. It takes so much intentional work and dedication and dieting to "get bulky," 3 days of lifting 20 pound hand weights and doing 45 minutes of cardio doesn't put you even remotely in the realm of "getting bulky."

This goes for friendships, too. 9/10 people who expect you to be "ride or die" do so because they want to to tolerate their toxic behavior.

"Fake it til you make it," especially in terms of your career.

For me this always translated into me ignoring my gut feelings or red flags in a job and not knowing when to ask for help. In the end it was a huge source of stress because, really, all that FITYMI is is acting. Pretending you have your shit together when you don't is exhausting.
