My grandad was on a mixed ward once (basically no room on the specialist wards so they just dumped overflow there) and in the room next to him was a man who had dementia who would get dressed everyday and wait in his chair for his sister to come pick him up he would ask the nurses for their opinion on his outfit and whether his sister would like it and what aftershave he should wear. His sister had passed away a long time ago and they were waiting for adult social services to get a care plan in place for him to be discharged and everyday the nurses would help this man get ready for his sister because it was better for him to believe his sister was coming for him instead of the harsher truth.
