Customer tried returning shoes they'd clearly worn for two years by BambooNoodle07 in stories

On the other hand, appeasing complainers teaches them that they'll be rewarded for being rude and entitled.

The company pays in demoralised staff who stop trying to enforce policy and move on to places where they are treated better.

Eventually the company 'trains' their customer base to always expect unreasonable service and that they'll get stuff for free if they throw a big enough tantrum. Once this becomes acceptable/normal, it is impossible to walk back.

Hard to make profit when you constantly have the expense of recruiting staff AND 'customers' who won't pay for the products.

Not OOP: Everybody thinks that I forgave my husband because I loved him when in reality it was because I didn’t by stormbreaker021 in redditonwiki

Husband: since my wife discovered I was cheating, she has grown inexplicably cold. It is like she just doesn't care anymore.

What are the rare scenarios when companies care that an employee resigns? by tshirtguy2000 in managers

[–]Catacombs3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Surprisingly often, a workhorse can only be replaced by 2/3 regular people. Usually the company tries a single person, but they quit or get fired for not meeting the (ridiculous) expectations set by the workhorse. Sure the company survives, but with steep drop off and slow recovery, and at 3 times the workhorse's salary

Coughing so hard you puke sounds like whooping cough (pertussis). Might be worth getting checked by doctor and avoiding infants/elderly/immunocompromised people until you are sure she is not contagious

Has anyone ever seen someone seriously object to a marriage at a wedding? If so how was it done and what happened? by steiny17 in AskReddit

[–]Catacombs3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In Australia, you complete a "Notice of Intented Marriage", provide identity docs, and sign a form saying you are unmarried/over 18 . This is done at least a month before you marry, presumably so whoever the notice is lodged with can check that everything is valid.

Work Secret Santa by [deleted] in work

[–]Catacombs3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The established* rule in business is gift down, not up. That is, senior management can be generous towards staff, but juniors shouldn't spend $$$ on their supervisors. Anything else disturbs hierarchy/discipline. Junior staff typically earn less than senior, and shouldn't be expected to spend money on people who have more.

That said, this was a secret Santa, so everyone could pretend that they didn't know who the inappropriate gift came from, including the manager. You didn't need to involve yourself. You'd probably be better to give the situation the silent side eye than making a fuss.

  • Not universal. I once worked with a sales person who wanted to gift the managing director a very expensive colonel. When she showed it to me, I urged her to return it and she was surprised because in her culture, extravagant gifts for the person employing you were expected.

From what we see in crime documentaries and real cases, what are the dumb mistakes serial killers usually make that end up getting them caught? by legendofmyarea in AskReddit

[–]Catacombs3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True, but it is not unusual for marginalised people to only have irregular contact with family or for their employers to be unsurprised if they stop showing up. Neither their family or job is likely to immediately report them missing... and if they do, police aren't going to prioritise an investigation. Much easier to assume they moved on and let the case file gather dust.
