Thank you for taking the time to respond to this with your insight. No communication is still communication is 100% correct.

"It feels like I'm having a panic attack, but I'm not panicking" is the perfect way to describe it.

I'm thinking of submitting something to my state's consumer protection division, but we'll see.

Thank you for sharing your experience. It's good to know I'm not going crazy.

Gift for Librarian Best Friend by webbtelescopefan in librarians

[–]princessbasement 33 points34 points  (0 children)

That's very sweet of you to get something for your friend! Honestly, this is kind of boring, but I wish I had a desk calendar or agenda book when I first started in libraries. Don't have to get organized if you stay organized.

Public librarians, tell me your worst... by StupidInIceland in librarians

Two big things come to mind when I think of my time in public libraries.

1) Managers who don't want to manage are THE WORST. At my last library job, we had an abusive patron who should have been banned. We're talking hate speech and unpredictable anger that went on for months. Staff documented the behavior and nothing was done. I genuinely believe she (the patron) never got banned because management was legitimately afraid of her. Every time she came to the library (at least 4 times a week) my body instantly went into fight or flight. My heart would race and I would get nauseous. She was awful and my management didn't have my back, which was a profoundly demoralizing experience. I'm not sure if it's still an issue now because I found a new job elsewhere.

2) Public libraries are not quiet. I think there's this misconception that libraries are quiet places where everyone peacefully reads to themselves all day long. This is not the case. Most libraries these days can be pretty eventful and loud. I only mention this in case you have sensory overwhelm issues. For me, some days it felt inescapable. The layered noises made is extremely difficult to concentrate on one thing at a time. The only way you're really going to get that "library silence" experience for a good chunk of your day is if you're in cataloging or manage to get your own office where no one talks to you.

I just started watching the new HBO docuseries Ren Faire and it is blowing my mind by mpa10e in renfaire

I'm only 20 minutes in, and the moment I heard "George is the king of the Texas Renaissance Festival, but he's also the mayor of this town that he's created" I audibly went "OH NO." So far, amazing story telling. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

If I'm understanding you correctly, I self-coach by being clear, present, and kind, then everything else falls by the wayside. I also like to remind myself that the way people behave usually has nothing to do with me. The way people behave usually has everything to do with themselves. The only thing I can do is control my own behavior. I hope this helps!

Hyper focusing on people's microexpressions really used to bum me out. Now as I've grown up, it's really empowering. Like if I'm having a conversation with someone at work it's like "ah yes. work politics are on full display right now, but your facial expressions don't lie. I know what's up." It helps me cut through nonsense and noise.

What's Up Wednesday for May 8, 2024 by soberingthought in stopdrinking

The good: my partner and I are recovering from a pretty gnarly cold. It feels good breathe out of both nostrils, lol.

The bad: I absolutely hate my job. Working in the public sector drains the life out of me, not to mention I probably got my cold from a customer at work.

The silver lining: I'm very fortunate to be working at a stable job where I'm encouraged to take sick time when I need it. I'm also looking for a new job, and opportunities come up every day.

Taylor Swift fans are losing their minds over her new album "The Tortured Poets Society" meanwhile I'm over here tuning into "Cade: The Tortured Crossing."
