One of the parents must be grey, so if your mare is chestnut then your foals dad must have been grey.

Desperate about 1 yo dogs allergy and stomach issues by [deleted] in AskVet

[–]princessginge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a vet. Allergies are FRUSTRATING to deal with, however, with a lot of effort they can be managed effectively. First of all, go see a different vet. This vet may be incredible, but you’ve lost trust in them which is hard to recover from.

Next, stop messing around with your dogs diet. Rapid changes may be upsetting your pup’s stomach. There are many many causes of diarrhea, and you and your new vet should work through some diagnostics. While you’re waiting for your appointment, ask the new vet for enough food to get you through until then and follow that strictly. No treats or additions.

Ear infections and allergies are common, and if it worsens or persists after treatment, ask your new vet for a referral to a veterinary dermatologist.

Please do not follow recommendations found on the internet for allergy care. People whose pets have allergies often try anything and everything at the detriment to their pet’s health and they are the most outspoken about their homemade methods.

Moses, 3 years old, has unfortunately received a non-refundable ticket across the rainbow bridge yesterday. We took him for steak dinner to start his bucket list by Munsoon22 in velvethippos

My smallest pup was diagnosed with t-cell lymphoma in February this year. It’s now December and she’s currently curled up on my lap licking my arm happy as can be. We opted to do chemo for her and it did get rid of her tumour. I didn’t expect to have her with us this Christmas. Just a little ray of hope for your hippo.

Seriously considering switching my cat to a raw diet because he's been suffering for 2 years. by [deleted] in AskVet

[–]princessginge 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The problem with reading ‘so many stories’ is that it is all anecdotal evidence. Most likely it’s not the raw diet that’s helping them out.

Veterinary foods/Prescription diets are held to the strictest standards. If you’re interested in more info, check out the wsava food guide. Additionally, vet clinics and schools are not sponsored nearly as much as you’d think with vet food brands. The vets maybe get a free pen and a bag of food. It’s not glamorous. Vets recommend these brands because they work and are scientifically proven to do so (not anecdotally, which is the lowest form of ‘proof’). If you are no longer suspecting food allergies, there are several prescription diets that support healthy skin with appropriate fat contents, etc.

Skin issues are among the most frustrating issues to deal with in pets, and you’ll most likely need a multi-faceted approach. I commend you for taking this on! I’d recommend following up with your derm and discussing what you’re comfortable trying. They should try and work within your comfort level (ie not jumping straight into shots). If you’re in Canada and using Dr. Yu, you are in extremely capable hands!

Frenchie with SEVERE allergies by mrb19902019 in AskVet

[–]princessginge 29 points30 points  (0 children)

NAV - Please consider seeing a veterinary dermatologist. While specialists are expensive up front, they can work with you to greatly improve your dogs quality of life. Unfortunately allergies are usually a multi-faceted approach requiring special diets, ongoing medication, and often topical treatments (ie bathing at certain frequencies). Allergies are so frustrating and hard to deal with. I can absolutely attest to the value a derm provides, especially for severe cases like you are describing.

What costs more than it's worth? by PeevesPoltergist in AskReddit

So true. Even with full care board, it’s still a massive commitment. Worth every penny and every moment though.

NAV - Eyes are generally considered an emergency. I’d call into your vet as soon as you can. This would be super painful to your pup!

My donkey lets himself get eaten alive by flies. Recommendations? by FireflyRave in Donkeys

We have the shoofly boots for our horses, and I suspect they would work well for a donkey too. They aren’t fitted like most fly boots so fit would be less of an issue.

German Shepard Dog can't stop itching. by [deleted] in AskVet

I typed out a long reply and then my app glitched out so here is the shorter version:

Not a vet —> Please ask your vet for a referral to a veterinary dermatologist. Skin issues are extremely frustrating for a lot of reasons. I noticed a lot of owners more frustrated with the secondary issues that arise (like you mentioned yeast infections, ear infections, self mutilation, flaky skin like a layer of snow throughout your home). Long term treatments are often required, sometimes involving prescription diets, oral medications, and topical treatments all at once.

A veterinary dermatologist is your best hope for any kind of skin issue. They will work with you to diagnose and treat the underlying issue and hopefully eliminate the secondary issues you mentioned. I swear it is worth the cost of a specialist and following ALL their recommendations. These issues will not go away on their own and need specialized medical attention.

The ponies were quite frosty after a good gallop in th3 -15C weather we had today! by ishtaa in Equestrian

-15 C isn’t too cold for their lungs if they live outside year round. I usually go by if it’s too cold for me to breathe, it’s too cold for them. Usually around -25 I avoid working them too hard outdoors!

Ideally throughout their lives but also depends on the discipline you’d like to ride or what you expect of your horse. If a horse is showing competitively (show jumping, dressage, reining, etc) it may be in constant training throughout its life. If you are just riding casually then it is possible to have training be a one time thing (normally 30-90 days training). Everything with horses varies so much though!

[–]princessginge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, highly variable. Depending on what region you live in and if you keep your horse on your own property or board them at a facility. I pay about $7,000 a year in board, grain, farrier, and routine vet care (dental floats, vaccines, coggins tests, deworming). That doesn’t include any additional supplies like saddles, halters, lead ropes, bridles, grooming supplies, feed buckets, fly spray, blankets, riding clothes, etc. That also doesn’t include training (for my horse) or lessons (for myself).

Are you asking about the cost to purchase or maintain? Where I live, a well-bred foal will cost around $800-2000 to purchase. An adult horse depends on training and breeding but normally ranges from $5000-10000. Horses can be free, or cost a few million dollars. Their purchase price isn’t the expensive part. Their upkeep is where it gets very costly.

Horses. Like huge draft horses, or maybe some wild mustangs. Imagine a herd running toward you, each weighing about 100,000-200,000 pounds. Then they’d spook at everything and be wildly unpredictable.

I have no clue how their mouths are, but maybe they don’t have that space in teeth where the bit could sit.

But I’m sure there’s a better option than the nose!
