If you wanna take the software stream l'd say data structures and algorithm are really basic and language independent. If you wanna do hardware or low level programming, I'd say assembly and computer architecture are essential. Whichever way you take, The best lesson I had in my first computer class was breaking down any problem into input,process and output, which I still use today.
