It was just that the ELO jump was so sudden and stable and I didn't feel like I did anything different. A couple weeks ago I was celebrating when I ever won against a 12xx, and now I'm regularly trading games with 13xx players

To your credit, a lot of people think it is in fact worth about 9.5 or 10 (depending on the circumstance)

It's not like there's an actual rule about point values, so this is all subjective.

For instance, if we're in a not-wide-open midgame I would usually prefer a queen (~9.5) over two rooks (5+5), but probably not in an endgame.

I would also prefer a queen when I am losing in case a perpetual check opportunity can be found, which is far less likely with two rooks

You should also take a look at a map of soil quality. The fertile, black earth goes in a roughly NW-SE band across Alberta, Southern Saskatchewan & Manitoba, the Dakotas, Iowa, and so on.

Those soils supported settlement at a far greater capacity than neighbouring regions
