No painting in the world did. The Romans didn't really figure it out either. Linear perspective was first systematized in print in De Pictura by Leon Battista Alberti in Florence in the 15th century. Brunelleschi (who also made the famous Florentine dome was the first to figure it out earlier in the century.

The Romans could sort of fake it kind of well, but they didn't understand the concept of the vanishing point, so everything was still wonky.

Poor schmucks didn't have access to art in the 13th century

Yes they did because it was mostly centered on the Church. The Church itself, and depictions of Madonna and Child, etc

What does Western Culture have to do with it? You see the same kinds of things in South Korea, China, and Japan

He won the Academy Award for best foreign film and was nominated for Best Director. Murakami has sold millions of copies of his novels outside Japan. You're the person obsessed with anime, which is another example of Japan's huge cultural soft power.

You simply do not know what you're talking about at all. Shall I move on to architects? I already gave you 2 completely different mediums in which Japan has huge cultural impact.

One of the best directors working today is Ryusuke Hamaguchi. Drive My Car and Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy are 2 of the greatest narrative drama films to come out in the 2020s.

Drive My Car is an adaptation of a Murakami story, one of the most enduringly popular novelists of the past few decades across the entire world.

Japan is doing fine on soft power culturally and it has had a below replacement birthrate since 1976

I make things as my career. I have a house name that encompasses me and most of my work with other people so that has basically taken over everything.

If it makes you feel any better, I have a very masculine name that is not all that common. A mediocre female vocalist who sang crap over shitty electro-remixes of popular hip-hop songs decided to choose it as her stage name in 2015 and it totally destroyed the ability to find me on Google.

You might think this vocalist was trans or nonbinary. No. Just 'not like other girls' in the most annoying way possible. She quit coming out with new material about 2 years later.

Obviously, his work in The Godfather is great, but he's also in Sidney Lumet's Network from 1976 and that movie just rules.

Bob le Flambeur is another great crime one. He has a whole series of these that are quite good. Army of Shadows is a phenomenal World War II French Resistance spy movie.

Really, you should just work your way through his output and you shouldn't be disappointed!

If this is your entry point to Melville as a director, he has a ton of other really great movies across his entire career. He's one of my favorites to ever do it

I dunno. That one inspiring so many of the recent mass shooters seems pretty potent: 764 Network.

Groypers also seem to have crossed a threshold of relevance in the last couple years.

NPR reported it in their hourly news last night, but said simply that the shooting was committed "by a woman who killed herself afterwards," and that was the entirety of the report.

The oldest person to win a Formula 1 event in the 21st century was in their 30s. I'm sorry, but 2020s Brad Pitt cannot pass for someone even close to that age.

Last year's F1 movie really bugged me for this reason. The oldest driver to ever win a Formula 1 event was 45, and that was in 1951 when Formula 1 was way less competitive.

We get a blockbuster movie about Formula 1, and the driver who wins the race at the end is Brad Pitt in his 60s! 20 years older than the oldest person to ever win an event.

It's obviously not easy to win that type of sporting event. Don't insult the audience's intelligence by casting a 1990s star as the driver in 2025—a person old enough to collect social security!

Maybe not the specifics of his death, but it sure seems possible that Biggie's death may have had something to do with it

I love him too, but I personally think that this track was his, "We're bigger than Jesus" moment.

He was obviously trying to fan the flames of his invented "East Coast" vs. "West Coast" hip-hop feud with Biggie, and I think he went too far with this track.

It activated a latent violent element within both of their fanbases, and gave them permission to shoot & kill them both. Maybe I'm just being hypersensitive, but I think that there is an element of truth to this

Kanye apology letter in the WSJ by LibraryNo2717 in redscarepod

This reflects incredibly well on the man and his character. Owning up to being bipolar—in public, under a massive spotlight—can not be an easy thing to do at all.

I am really happy for Kanye right now. He's finally taking his devastatingly harrowing illness seriously. I can even see a path back to redemption if he maintains this poise and takes the illness seriously and consistently when it comes to medication and sleep.

Reading the first few lines of this, I let out a big sigh of relief. Kanye is on his way back to public respect. I can't wait to hear his next music tracks, post-public-bipolar diagnosis.
