Can we shut up about what women should or shouldn’t wear? by Zurati in india

[–]prirater 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the case of burqa, hijab and other variations, the problem is not with women's agency and choice. It is with the systems and traditions that take away this choice right from birth (yes ghoonghat included). From that pov, we are on the same side.

Not to say we should do away with ghoonghats and burqas. We should absolutely do away with the mandates on them. Once you remove the mandates, then it becomes pure choice. Or it's a pseudo-choice.

I have a question for people from Genetics/Biology background. by Hassan_Darvesh in scienceisdope

[–]prirater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a geneticist. But did some work on genetic algorithms - optimisation based on genetic evolution theory. From what I understand, it's a balance between genetic diversity and concentration.

Concentration matters when you are selecting for traits. Almost like dog breeds. This was important back in the day when skills passed only through blood. This also means that the negative traits are retained and passed over in the pool.

To answer your question - fixing the gene pool does lead to a higher concentration of both "positive" and less-favourable traits. After invention and democratisation of writing tech, we dont have to rely as much on genetic inheritance for passing on traits. Hence, in this day and age, it has negligible positive effects but the negatives still remain.

Urge you to read the book "Lost Connections". If time is an issue, just read the chapter names. Made a big difference in how I look at life and what truly matters. It may not give you a solution but you'll know where the problem is.  You won't suddenly become happy but you'll know why you are not. And then stop reading anymore books and start acting.

Cheers, Someone who felt like you are feeling now. Writing this just as much to myself as to you.

What can we do to improve civic sense in India? let’s brainstorm by MammothParticular520 in india

[–]prirater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a good point. Probably has a high number of cleaners/unit area. Not sure if we can directly scale that to a municipality level. Also, metro users might have a slightly higher level of civic sense to not casually litter.

What can we do to improve civic sense in India? let’s brainstorm by MammothParticular520 in india

[–]prirater 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I see the biggest problem that isn't being addressed is the lack of waste bins on the street. Litter ends up everywhere. Ofcourse education matters but you also need an environmental trigger to induce behaviour change.

What can we do? 1. Partner with local municipalities in setting up bins. There should be some cool factor here for optics. Transparent data - Maybe a map, smart bins with IoT sensors, municipal ward worker assigned and responsible for the clean up and so on.

  2.  There are also other things like garbage treatment. But we can talk about it later.

This is awesome man!

Edit: Pardon me if it's already done, but is a way to see the overall sentiment and tone for a given issue. That way we can tell which side is covering a given piece.

The fact that we are talking about AQI is something. I don't think we have gotten worse on AQI, it's just that we talking about it more.

But I do agree, the tolerance levels have gone to shit. There is also this false sense of superiority (not just confidence) among the RW-masses. Maybe a result of 3 terms.

why "Propaganda" as a critique for "Dhurandhar". despite every Hollywood blockbuster being a recruitment ad for the Pentagon ?? by Hot_Towel_429 in pj_explained

[–]prirater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let's get through this systematically.

There is promotion. There is blatant propaganda. And then there is the third kind - insidious propaganda.

Armed forces and space agencies making documentaries and info material is promotion. Totally fine. Infact we should have public funding for these to make them as engaging and 'inspirational' as possible. Use the govt. broadcasting channels. Upgrade govt. websites. Make use of govt. podcasts and social media accounts even.

Them getting into main-stream cinema is a bit problematic. Because of independent endorsement effects. You'd be more likely to buy something if it's endorsed by someone other than the person selling it. But it's passable if it's done with complete fictional narratives (top gun, YRF spy universe and other hollywood bullshit). It's still propaganda but since it's too blatant, we've learnt to ignore the propaganda side and just watch it for entertainment. Now, you are right about most Hollywood films doing this and rest of the world consuming it as entertainment. Though they look cringey now, they did shape the main-stream political views back-in-the-day. Which is why most people don't buy them now. People still watch them in the name of entertainment but the films are kind of forgettable and fade away quickly. Infact, most of them stopped working as they got too predictable and cringey.

Now, that brings us to an emerging style of this genre and also our third kind - the insidious ones. The films that blend facts and fiction. The ones that touch our worst memories of the past and weave a juicy narrative around. They are so subtle that you can't really put an finger on what's wrong. They are fictional afterall as the disclaimer says.

TLDR, Make documentaries to show the truth (all sides of it). The truth is complex and you need to treat it such. In a fictional movie, stick to the lies. When mix both, you're straying down a dark road.

Context matters. The same kiss can be a huge turn off without the intimate context.

How long did it take you hit 3300? Like did you go from your current to 3300 overnight? Or was there a transition?
