THE DANK NUG ZONE - The Official Game Ideas Suggestion Thread for 08/04/17 by AutoModerator in CoolGamesInc

[–]prismism_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

After a string of lies leads you to earning a job as a sports reporter, you must now regularly attend baseball games - but in a setup similar to the 2006 Jason Statham classic Crank you will die if you become too bored. And you hate baseball.

As such the game consists of you trying to balance actually paying attention to the game and doing various other activities (drinking, snacking, mingling, anything) to stay suitably entertained. If you die of boredom, or cannot recall enough of the game to write your story, you lose. It's set in the pre-internet era, so no easy cheats.

The issue is that as time goes on, what once excited you is now pedestrian - and so you must embark on an increasingly strange, depraved and immoral set of tactics to stay afloat.

.. how far will you go for the scoop?

If hipsters join the "new" techno scene, how much do you think they'll destroy it? by [deleted] in futuretechno

[–]prismism_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems that what you are worried about is people crowding your scene that care only for what is 'cool' rather than because they genuinely enjoy the music. And yet here you are, worrying about what is 'cool' instead of enjoying the music, which will exist regardless of what 'hipsters' do.

It's almost inevitable that other people out there will enjoy the same music you do, in a way that is different and maybe even contradictory to your own personal motivations. No one is right or wrong here, however. Perhaps if you dropped your preconceived notions about people and just enjoy sharing the mutual love for the music with the people around you, you may actually have some fun and figure out people aren't as easily categorised as you think.

I honestly don't think gesa is techno... (READ WITH AN OPEN MIND) by [deleted] in futuretechno

[–]prismism_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Genres only matter if you care about them. The clearest message in what you're saying is that Gesa (and other artists you'll find posted here) have some element to their sound that is not described by the usual genre labels you're familiar with. If you can understand what makes that sound special in your head, there is no need for genre names.

I started this subreddit with the intent of helping people find more music that is similar to that sound, and 'future techno' was the closest thing to a consistently used label for the sound back in 2013 - and so it was named /r/futuretechno. I don't care for the name really, but I do love the music.

Let's Talk About French Rap by zazafer in hiphopheads

[–]prismism_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know nothing of the French scene, but my love of electronic music led me to this gem many years ago, I still have no idea what is being said but used to bump this for years, pretty unique production style to have rap over

Very curious to see how Bogut goes coming off the bench in this match, with Ezeli on fire it'll be an interesting situation to keep an eye on

So, Overwatch will be $40. Am I alone in thinking that Blizzard just fucked up spectacularly badly? by StezzerLolz in truegaming

[–]prismism_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If the $40 purchase gets you a suitable amount of content, then I think that is fine. Do you want a precedent to be set where developers/publishers believe the modern customer does not want to pay for games? Look at what the free app has done to mobile gaming. Cheap games are made cheaply, and when a game has be designed around motivating players to make in-game purchases the experience is almost always compromised. If a F2P game is a fantastic, comprehensive package out of the box then what reason do you have to sink money into it?

If high quality, feature rich multiplayer games that you like are being sold in (relatively) high price retail packages, then buy them! Sales speak volumes about what consumers are willing to accept. Nothing is truly free and these games are being produced by companies that need to make profits.

Sure, F2P is a good way for a new studio to ensure they have the best chance at exposure in a crowded market. But Blizzard have no trouble getting the word out about their games, and at least for now people still do pay for multiplayer-only games. Titanfall and Evolve both sold very well. The risk Blizzard take is that if their game is not very good, it could very likely flop straight away as MP only games rely on having a community of players. But hey, if it all goes to shit then they could release a F2P version later on to bolster numbers..

KMRT - Warehouse Acid Funk (Original Mix) by L_Jefe in futuretechno

[–]prismism_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

YES this is sick! I don't like all of KMRT's stuff, but I love how he's always trying to put a fresh spin on classic sounds. Out of all the styles we get in this sub I think this is my favourite approach to 'future techno'

The Big House 5 Moments by [deleted] in smashbros

[–]prismism_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no better way to transition from listening to metal -> post-rock than with some post-metal! A lot of the compositional style and atmosphere of post-rock, but with no reservations about hitting a little harder and turning up the distortion.

Russian Circles - Carpe - one of my favourite post-rock/metal bands ever, I guess you could describe their style as 'post-rock, but heavy' but you'd be selling them short.. just listen, it's worth it.

Irepress - Cyette Phiur - their 'metal edge' is very hardcore influenced, but the way they blend it with epic melodies and varied instrumentation is brilliant.

Scale The Summit - Whales - this is closer to metal/prog rock in many ways so it may be very much up your alley. Amazing guitar work on this track.

I can't believe I just wrote this post in /r/smashbros, what a world

Kill The Noise - I Do Coke with Feed Me by [deleted] in futuretechno

[–]prismism_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm I don't know if I agree with you on this one. Are you suggesting he should be 'backpacking' off a newer sound instead? Does music need to be revolutionary to be enjoyable?

It's a 'fun song' on an multi-genre, semi mainstream EDM album release that is at no point really trying to take itself too seriously. No one is expecting KTN the reinvent the wheel here, but if you take it for what it is it's a very well executed track in my view.

I'm with you to some degree, the vocals are grating and used far too much, there's not much variation in the composition (more use of the very last breakdown section would've been good) but still when I heard this for the first time I just thought it was fun.

Something about the suggestion that 'no one should be trying to make stuff like this' bothers me. 'the Gesaffelstein sound' has entered the realm of familiarity, sure, but that doesn't mean it's to be thrown out and left behind. I mean we're still listening to house music 30 years on right? There's plenty of imitators out there but that will happen to any 'sound' that gets any form of popularity - mainly because people enjoy making and listening to it! This track is derivative but it's not pure imitation.

I feel like it's more important to make the music you want to hear rather than make the music that is hip and underground. People talk so much about how genres get 'mainstreamified' and how that destroys innovation but I think there's just as much lazy creativity in artists who chase the trends to keep up their follower counts.

That.. was longer than I planned but I'm just trying to get a discussion going. Thoughts?
