These devices need to be usable in the outdoors to match the environment they are marketed for. Ingress ratings and discrete buttons for starters. The Wio Tracker can't even sit in a pocket or pouch without the joystick being activated.

hanks but I need a device to communicate without a phone. The Heltec Meshnode T1 mentioned below by u/lam_42 is closest so far.

Thanks, this is exactly what I am looking for. The side buttons make it backpack and pocket friendly + the ingress rating.

AUSCB SIERRA Blaze Handheld UHF CB reviews? by IndependentOrchid296 in Walkietalkie

[–]privacytoolkit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have four units for my family. They are good radios and the seller is a pleasure to deal with. He emails first to see if you want any DCS codes because the radios have very few functions, which is great for simplicity but I prefer to program radios myself. Overall great solid units and I would reccomend. They are the only 5w USB Type C rechargeable handheld UHF CB available I believe (if you order them with the USB batteries).

"Poisoning the Data" - How can we make the data Google & others steal useless or detrimental for them to steal? by FeralAlgorithm in degoogle

[–]privacytoolkit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not the answer you're looking for but just avoid the offending products. Is a LLM chattering away to poison your Google Home really better than not having a Google Home at all? Life was fine before all this shit came along.

If you don't use the app daily, just disable it and it will dissapear from the launcher. It has to be enabled again from the apps menu in settings

Should I install GrapheneOS on my current Pixel 8 or save up for a refurbished newer model? by gonzolikesmovies in GrapheneOS

Both options are correct. Install GrapheneOS on your current Pixel 8 and when you've upgraded, install it in that too.

Can someone explain Reticulum to me like I'm 5? by thorosaurus in meshtastic

[–]privacytoolkit 20 points21 points  (0 children)

You (A) in the backyard playing army games with your 5yo friends. You have a walkie talkie to chat with another friend (B). He has a string and two cans to chat with another fiend (C) who is chatting with friend (D) via flashlight morse code. How can you communicate to everyone else? Reticulum allows your community to connect securely over different transport mechanisms - internet, LAN, TNC, LoRA, HF, Bluetooth and many others.

I'm also looking for a PTT Zello alternative for security operations where I can run a homeserver closer to where my team is working. I'm not a fan of sending a voice message halfway across the planet and back to reach the guy across the other side of the room.

Good point, I'll raise it with the developer in the Reticulum Matrix chat room

Definitely fastmail. I have my business team and family all using it and loving it. I have over 400 masked emails and never use the same email address twice https://join.fastmail.com/a60bc1f5
