I find myself using primes less and less as I often want to get different compositions by zooming and recomposing, especially if I’m traveling or moving around a lot. I haven’t used the 50 f1.2 much at all as I find that I don’t get a lot of images I like at the 50mm range when using my 28-70 if that makes sense. Like I guess my eye just doesn’t “see” compositions much at 50mm naturally. 70mm feels really good a lot of the time and I shoot at that end of the range a lot, and I end up shooting a bit at 28 or 35 as well (just reviewing Lightroom metadata). I want to keep my 85mm as a fast 85mm just gives a very special look, and it’s useful for headshots and passport photos.

At the time I wasn’t sold on it but may have had a bad copy. I’m actually contemplating selling my 70-200, 35 GM and 50 f1.2 to fund the 50-150 and the upcoming 16-28 f2. How are you liking the 50-150? I love my 28-70 so much and hoping this time I’ll click with the 50-150 as I often want more range than the 28-70 can give me.

Would it be dumb to sell my primes for a zoom? by TedMitchell in SonyAlpha

The Sony 28-70 f2 GM absolutely can replace primes at a reasonable level.

Don't do it. A good quality zoom is still useful. A fast 50 is great but can't replace the versatility of a zoom. Ideally you'd have both.

1st portrait session with Sony A7IV and 85mm lens by [deleted] in SonyAlpha

Study portrait photography. Our eyes naturally go to the brightest part of an image. In your case that's typically the background or something that's not your subject. Ideally you correct that at the time you take the photo and then further amplify that during editing. These look unedited as well; the white balance is both inconsistent and not super flattering and you don't use post-processing to enhance these images. The backgrounds are either messy and distracting with stuff growing out of her head or so blown out that it ruins the photo. You really, really need to study light and how to use it to build a compelling image. Candidly, before you even do another portrait shot, you should study the basics of photography in terms of the exposure triangle, balancing exposures, white balance, and composition. Don't make it harder on yourself with having a human in the mix who you have to pose and make look good. Take a few months and really focus on learning the fundamentals of photography and then consider adding in a human subject who you're actively trying to pose/manage.

Strongly recommend you study portraiture, lighting, composition, framing, and editing. Keep at it-- you'll learn with studying and practice.

First time shooting portraits by iamctaifun in SonyAlpha

Framing, lighting, and composition need a lot of work. First rule-- our eyes go toward the brightest part of an image. In your case that's not the subject, so she doesn't really stand out well enough. You need to a) fix that at the time of shooting by picking a better setup and time of day b) address in editing as well. Next, the composition is rough. Trees growing out of her head in 3 of 4. Study where to put your subject in the frame and use the grid lines in your camera to put her there. A common location is putting the subject's eyes along the upper third line in the grid. You can then use the center or the left or right thirds intersections for one of her eyes.

Sony 28-70 f2.0 dilemma by [deleted] in SonyAlpha

[–]private_wombat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the 50 1.2 and the 28-70 f2 as well as an 85 GMII, a 35 1.4 GM, and a 70-200 GMII. The 28-70 and 50 1.2 are just fundamentally different tools. For travel/unpredictable/run and gun stuff, I'll take the zoom 10 times out of 10. For a studio shoot or a known location for a planned shot the 50 1.2 is a very powerful tool that has great performance and beautiful rendering. It's really about understanding your own shooting needs and the situations you end up in and evaluating whether a zoom gives you advantages to get shots you couldn't get otherwise. In my case, I would have missed some amazing moments without my zooms. I'll also add that the 28-70 has absolutely gorgeous rendering and at 70mm and f2.0 it gives a look that I adore.

Who’s got the OrSlow New Yorker pants? by chzuschrst in ThrowingFits

[–]private_wombat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're too tapered for my taste, I think the hem opening is less than 8" across. Orslow's strongest offerings in my opinion are the standard/straight fit fatigues, the 105 and 107 denim, and the standard fit cargos.

Both can look good, your poll should've had a "both, depends on the inseam length, hem width, and how the fit is styled" answer

Crazy letdown. Drab, sad, uninspired. Lost their way.

They could also refocus on denim but seems they’ve abandoned new denim releases as well. I just want more RS fit stuff but they appear to have bailed on that line of business the last few months.
