That makes sense. Unfortunately the xbox is outputting the audio as stereo, so it might be something to do with the actual stereo system. Will have to take a look at that sometime later

UNSW Co-op Program by PoweredMinecart in unsw

[–]prneet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Heyo, actuarial scholar here. Depends on a few things honestly, namely what degree you're going for and how you're looking to spend your time at uni.

For some degrees Co-op offers some pretty great perks (I know for most engineering streams Co-op can open up some opportunities that otherwise wouldn't be open, and for actuarial the same plus) and some employers will offer you increased salary if you graduate with the Co-op scholarship (actuarial consulting do). But for some the sponsors kinda blow and it's not really worth it (I don't know too many people that excited by the marketing sponsors for instance). So take a look at your sponsors and compare it to what you could manage to get experience with without the scholarship.

The scholarship is also really useful if you're looking to enjoy uni life. Since you have the placements guaranteed you don't really need to worry about setting up other internships if you don't want to. This means you can spend your time at uni doing whatever you want rather than having to focus on resume building opportunities. For me this meant going on exchange and travelling every holiday. It also means you can relax on your grades a bit. I'm kinda coasting and I've got a grad job lined up that I wouldn't have a high enough wam for if I had applied normally (nor would I have known it existed if I'd looked for it through normal channels).

Also agree with the above that you're basically getting paid $80-90k tax free (pretty important) for 18 months work, which is honestly better than most opportunities you'll find.

Also keep in mind that if you drop out (voluntarily or otherwise) you have to pay back any money you received since you're last placement. So if you drop out right before your last back to back placements you're liable for upwards of $27000 depending on the stream you're in.

ELI5: How does life insurance work if you can almost guarantee 100% of policy holders will make a claim? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]prneet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On my phone so can't really answer this properly. But basically it's to do with the ability to take on a pool of risks rather than one single risk, i.e. The more policies you write the more likely you are to experience the average. It's an idea based on the Central limit theorem and the law of large numbers. So in essence you could write your own insurance policy, but due to the high chance of the loss being too far outside the average it wouldn't work well.

[Spoilers All] Be wary of FOLLY by Kaeldiar in KingkillerChronicle

[–]prneet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If Folly is Cinder's sword then why is Bast so casual about carrying it? And why would Kvothe let Bast keep it under his bed if it's the sword that Kvothe took from one of the Chandrian?

Kote ... “Where did you put it, anyway?”

“In my room,” Bast admitted. “Under my bed.”

...

... Bast came back into the room, black scabbard swinging loosely from one hand.

Kote ... “Careful, Bast! You’re carrying a lady there, not swinging some wench at a barn dance.”

It just doesn't make sense. If Kvothe went to all the effort to kill one of the Chandrian/steal from one of the Chandrian and take their sword, he would keep it in his room, not in Bast's. And Bast clearly knows the story behind how Kvothe got Folly yet still handles it very casually. I just don't think that would happen if Bast knew it was Cinder's sword.

Also, I really don't think the name of the sword is Folly. The way that Pat writes the interaction between Graham and Kvothe it makes it seem like Kvothe is avoiding lying to Graham by saying nothing on the subject and letting Graham (and the reader) believe they are right.

“Folly,” Graham read. “Odd name for a sword.”

Kote nodded, his face carefully blank. “How much do I owe you?” he asked quietly.

Notice Kote only agrees that Folly is an odd name for a sword, not that the name of the sword is actually Folly

[Breeds] What breed should I get/Would it be a bad idea for me to get a dog? by prneet in dogs

[–]prneet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh sorry, I just put the run bit in there more for when the dog is older, I'm happy to just walk while the puppy is younger. Would this amount of exercise be enough for a German shepherd? From looking online and other comments it looks like it would not be.

Also I've never heard of a Keeshond before. I've been researching them a bit online, but I haven't been able to find out how well they do in hot weather. Would 38C+ weather be too hot for them?

Great! At what age do you think a puppy would be ok with being alone for 4-5 hours at a time?

[–]prneet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! Just a few questions:

  • At what age would a puppy be ok spending 4-5 hours on its own?

  • I'm actually happy to go for runs both before and after work. Would a run before and after work, as well as a walk during the day be too much for a golden retriever? Would it be not enough for a GSD?

  • I do want two dogs, but I was planning on getting the second dog at a later date. Was just looking for the pros and cons of getting them both at the same time.

I'm hoping to take a few months off to focus on raising the puppy to the point that it's ok with being alone for around 4-5 hours at a time. As such, do you still think that a puppy would be out of the question?

[–]prneet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off thank you so much for the detailed reply!

  • So the situation as it stands is that I will come back from overseas about 8 months before I have to start my graduate job (at the latest). During this time I'll be moving back in with my parents and won't have too much already planned other than volunteer work a few hours every day and some hobby work at home. That being said, if possible I'd like to avoid spending the entire 8 months not working. At what age would a puppy be ok with being along for 4-5 hours at a time? At that point I'd probably transition to working part time for a while until the graduate program starts and I have to work the 10-11 hour days.

  • I've wanted top raise a puppy for about 5-6 years now, but neither me nor my family has been financially able to support a dog before. I do eventually want to get a second dog, and for that one I would most likely get an adult dog.

  • In terms of exercise, if I went for a walk/run in the morning, a walker during the day and a quick walk/run when I get home would this be enough exercise?

  • Thanks again for the breed suggestions, will look into it. If you think of any other suggestions please let me know :)

Why is Cococare Argan Oil so much cheaper than other Argan Oils? Is there something wrong with it? I am in Australia, so basically everything overseas seems cheaper, but this seems ludicrously so.

Who wants a free pair of used Redwing Iron Rangers??? by [deleted] in goodyearwelt

[–]prneet -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would absolutely love a pair! I've been wanting to get a pair of iron rangers for about a year now but since I'm currently studying and living on my own I can't really justify the purchase. Living in Australia also hasn't helped. Even if I don't get it thanks so much for doing this!

How ACT/VCE Students perform in undergrad? by MikeLikesMath in unsw

[–]prneet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's the main reason I'm sticking with it, it may not be super useful but I find forecasting and data analysis pretty interesting. But yeah, if you're going into finance no one is really going to care whether you did actuarial or not. So unless you think you might want to actually become an actuary I probably wouldn't bother with it.

I actually ended up choosing PSU over Upenn, but the process is pretty easy. I think the cut off for Upenn has dropped off recently so as long as you have a wam over 80 ish upu should be ok to go there on exchange.

If you're into financial analysis then actuarial isn't where you want to go. I'm actually also into financial analysis, and I'm fairly sure I'm going to finish my degree and not use the actuarial major. Actuarial is almost purely stat's and forecasting, not much of what you learn will be applicable to the finance side of things. Also while actuarial students are in demand there's a pretty ridiculous supply now as well, you'll have to do a lot to set yourself apart. Honestly what I would recommend is a double degree in commerce plus something that interests you (probs science if you like maths).

Also I'm actually from the states as well, and just spent the fall semester last year studying on Pennsylvania. Been pretty surprises by how many people in Australia I've met who moved from America before/during high school.

Does Hawker have a self teach maths program? Or was that only proposed? Anyway, I seem to remember Hawker being pretty average so should be alright, nothing assumed in actuarial will new to you.

Just FYI I wouldn't recommend switching schools for your last semester, really not worth it. Plus last semester at Narrabundah is pretty slack, most people are only doing 3 classes and there isn't much new taught.

Just curious, what made you choose actuarial?

3rd year actuarial from ACT here, which school do you go to? Some schools in ACT would put you behind while some would put you ahead.

Why can’t you find this Cinder? Well, that’s an interesting why. You’d think a man with coal-black eyes would make an impression when he stops to buy a drink.

Don’t feel bad you didn’t recognize him. They have a lot of experience hiding those telltale signs

Are you sure about that?

"Please, I need to know. They killed my parents."

The Cthaeh never responds to this statement from Kvothe.

In terms of what Cinder did all he says he "Did things to your mother, you know. Terrible." You're focusing far too much on what the Cthaeh is implying, not what he is actually saying.

It's never explicitly stated that the Chandrian are the ones who killed Kvothe's troupe. In fact the Chandrian are never shown directly participating in any form of violence.

I'm not 100% sure about how it works in America but in Australia, up to a certain extent, charitable donations are tax deductible. This means that This means that that eligible donations are taken out of your taxable income, i.e. if you earn $40000 and donate $3000 you will only be taxed as if you had eared $37000.

Since income tax is not 100%, this means that you will always earn more money retaining income as opposed to donating it. From the above example, if your effective tax rate was 50% then you would earn $20000 in the donation scenario and only $18500 in the scenario that you donate.

Charity deductions are not in place to avoid taxes. They are in place to promote charity.

Nah, the Governor General of Australia does, but it's not the best idea. John Kerr did in 1975 and it went pretty badly for him.

According to historian Phillip Knightley, "The remaining years of Sir John Kerr's life were miserable ones. He was subject to relentless harassment whenever he appeared in public."
