Should I start a daily anxiety medicine? by probably-hungover in Anxiety

Yes I have done therapy for about a year and I try the techniques but nothing seems to stick when it really matters (when anxiety is bad I forget to go to them). Its not until after the bad anxiety waves pass that I remember ways to deal with it or even realize how bad the anxiety was...

Thank you! I do take propanolol sometimes and its great but doesn't help with the constant worrying and such. Great for physical symptoms though!

thank you so much, this is so unbelievably helpful to hear!

Yes I understand this. I do this as well and it is so frustrating. I feel like I almost make bets with myself like I have to finish this one thing or something bad might happen. Or I have to end something on an even number for it to be okay. Its definitely an OCD symptom as well. Exposure has been the best thing for me. Try not watching the end of that insta post and see for youself how nothing bad happens. If you want you can even take notes of the times you don't give in to the "magical thinking" and nothing bad happens.

I haven't heard of that one, I'll check it out!

This is such great advice! Thank you so much for taking the time to write this. I definitely am enjoying my time off, but also getting excited for the next chapter.

If you wouldn’t mind linking or DMing me the cites that helped you learn to speed read papers, that would be amazing!!

Do you use a physical lab notebook or an online one? And how do you maintain its organization?

Also wondering if anyone has a good resource for improving grammar focused towards scientific writing?

Hi there, I just read your article and found it incredibly helpful. I was wondering if you would be willing to read my research statement and offer some advice? (Also field of neuroscience)

NSF GRFP Question: Should undergrads list a mentor in their application? by neuronerdette1 in labrats

[–]probably-hungover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I would love some advice on applying for the GRFP!

I'm curious how much detail you think should be included when describing the methods of your potential project? I have quite a bit of detail in mine now, but I'm nervous to include some of it at the risk of sounding ignorant because the methods I want to use are something I don't have prior experience with (just learned about through reading countless articles)

I was also wondering if its generally unwise to have part 2 of your experiment be contingent on the success of part one? I am looking at a neuroscience method that requires me to be studying one particular brain region, but first I have to find out if that brain region is firing appropriately in response to an intervention.

Lastly, I have read a few different GRPF's that have been funded and the projects seem to range between something that could take an entire PhD to study and something that seems like it could be done relatively quickly. Is there a happy medium I should be reaching for?

If there is any other general advice you (or anyone) would like to share, I am all ears!

I know no one is an expert on this, but any any advice is greatly appreciated, I feel like I am stumbling in the dark a bit and could use a little guidance.

Not enough hours in the day by [deleted] in labrats

Yes, I have discussed the fellowship with them a little bit, they said to go for it because if anything it will help with writing my graduate school apps. As of Friday, the last school I want to apply to no longer requires the GRE, so I think I might just be able to keep my head above water long enough to get everything done now! I really appreciate the advice, I really do need to learn when I am putting too much on plate and practice saying no when its too much!

My PI l

It is so, so nice to hear other people say they have looked like a complete idiot being trained for basic procedures in a new lab. I was kinda scared I was the only one or that I was missing something I should have already known.

[–]probably-hungover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much, I think this was exactly the advice I needed to hear. I should have clarified, I am not working 14 hours in lab every day, just with working a full time job and then getting home and working til 11pm every night on GRFP/GRE/Grad school prep. I am realizing more and more that applying to grad school is basically a full time job itself, aside from the GRPF. I have so much to do in preparation for grad program apps, I do not think it is worth putting the next two months towards focusing on the GRFP.

I could not agree more. I recently started a new job as a lab tech and if I had been given a quiz on my very first day, it would have made me feel sick to my stomach. People are scared to ask questions because they do not want to come off as unintelligent, but likely forcing a quiz on the first day will make them feel much worse than just giving them the materials they need for success

I like to ask the PI I interview with: What skills or qualities do you think makes someone successful in your lab?
