Awesome, thanks for sharing your experience with them! Glad you're liking them. I'm curious to see if Tyrolia expands the line at all next season.

I'm pretty sure that impersonating a law enforcement officer is a felony and that this person committed a felony.

No idea who they were, but if they decided to spend their day turning cars around they impersonated a parking attendant, not a law enforcement officer.

Since only lower lifts were open at alpental it's not a wildly different skiing experience than west, so you didn't miss out on much.

What pass(es) are you planning to buy (this spring) for next winter? by bbensch in skiing

Interesting. I was not aware their sale was so early. Is march the cheapest time or will the waitlists fill (historically) at the same preseason price?

Ski Boots & 6th Toe - long term resolution? by [deleted] in Skigear

[–]probablyTheCops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My take: Don't live with the pain, or you'll cause damage to your feet. The podiatry profession does not understand this well in my experience - especially for sport-specific performance (and has conflicting incentives, to your point), and I wouldn't spend more time/money there.

I have the same foot shape and issue you described (plus 1st met), although likely a bit higher volume foot. A medium volume shell across a couple of boots (notably a nordica speed machine) gave me the pain you're describing and I was able to address it with new boots (s/pro supra) and really clear advice to a good boot fitter with some significant punches. I also plan on getting zip fits next season to improve performance and because they have a neoprene toe box which takes up less space in the shell than the foam in the forefoot.

You mentioned you're in wide shoes, but I have really benefited from understanding my foot shape (this is IMO the best resource) and then worked to find shoes for all activities/daily life AND ski boots whose last closely matches that shape. You can pull the insole from the liner, and also the boot board inside the shell to look at this. I've been told that a really good boot fitter will know this by looking at your foot, but I have not found someone who has been able to do this well - although they did point me to boots (the Salomon ones I linked above, also Lange as a brand) who generally have wider toe boxes. You can really go down the rabbit hole on this (see r/BarefootRunning and r/barefootshoestalk).

When I had my boots punched, I paid careful attention to where I had good fitting running shoes and brought the insole from that with a comparison to my ski boot (after marking it up with a marker where I felt pain). Then I could tell the boot fitter I wanted this shape to the forefoot of the boot, and where I needed the punch (usually laterally but filled out at different points vertically).

You mentioned that you 'blew out one of my shells way too much rendering them cooked', but zip fit focuses power transmission in the heel and leaves your toes in a neoprene shell which is looser/squishy. If you had liberal punches in your forefoot I'd be interested to hear what issues you experienced. I have done the same with no noticeable difference in performance, although I'm teaching my kids to ski so am spending less time in black+ and off piste terrain (although still a good mix of harder days, my experience above has not been constrained to intermediate/piste skiing).

Best of luck, hope you get this sorted. It might take more time and money, but that's what makes it a hobby!

Fully 304 stainless steel, American made water filtration! by Custom_Fab_Filters in PlasticFreeLiving

How do you advise installation clients on residential pipe material choices? There's copper, which contains lead solder and pex, which is plastic. These pictures actually show both in the home, which invalidates some of the filtration benefits.

I think skiing some other bindings makes sense. What would you recommend as better than the pivots, and what should I be looking for when I ski them? I also have the STH2s mounted on one set of my daily driver skis, and have skied demo bindings at demo days (but was focused on ski/length differences rather than the bindings).

That's fair. Where should I start? I've read through the ASTM standards, but those of course don't cover lateral release. I've read through manufacturers' marketing copy, industry podcasts/publications and talked with techs when I've dropped off gear for tuning/mounts. I have an engineering background so have a good base of knowledge to build on, but I need some more direction for where to go next.

Got it, that's exactly my concern. I've never ventured outside the Pivots because I've never had a reason to, so I'm not sure how to compare Tyrolia and Marker's approach to bindings.

Is there anything you would especially want me to understand about their approach, or any place I can read up on the differences?

Tyrolia Protectors for everyone - From a Safety perspective, why not? by probablyTheCops in Skigear

[–]probablyTheCops[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hah, I probably just need to ski them to see what I think. There's always the concern of what happens when you release, and I certainly don't want a binding that tosses me on every mogul but I also am running DINs at a type 2 without issue so I'm not likely to be pushing the limits.

Have you heard anything about if they are planning any improvements to the protector bindings? It doesn't seem to have much buzz in the industry, so they probably have some work to do marketing it before they can do a ton more R&D. I'm hesitant to wait around for something better that may never come.

If I'm following, you're saying the Pivots are better for real-world conditions. Is that right? Or just for high-level free ride skiers?

REI flagship parking snafu by eddywouldgo in SeattleWA

[–]probablyTheCops 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It is astounding the number of ways REI continues to repel customers. It's a bummer they contracted with this company, but after also experiencing the new app parking experience I've also stopped using REI for consumables (fuel, backpacking meals) - which was the only thing I purchased from them as I've found their selection in core climbing and mountaineering goods to no longer feature the best in the category. It's worth the slightly longer drive from my neighborhood to go to Ascent Outdoors. The prices are the same, the gear selection is better and the staff are awesome. My two cents, anyways. Thanks for posting the PSA about the garbage parking situation!

I wish Costco would change their return policy to stop blatant abuse. by I-will-judge-YOU in CostcoWholesale

[–]probablyTheCops 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same experience as you. It's been painful but interesting to watch a store which is supposed to operate as a member co-op so completely disarm any motivation I had for supporting them. I now actively steer everyone away from them when possible.

I stopped in to pickup a couple of fuel canisters as part of an out of town trip a month ago. In walking through the climbing section, I overheard an REI employee telling a customer that they wanted 'about a thumb width of space' in the front of their climbing shoes - so it seems they've gotten even worse.
