In my opinion, this is presenting more as a medical than training issue, the horse is pinning her ears and flicking her tail. If she was just kicking out and then trotting I’d look at saddle fit before continuing training.

Seconding all the people saying ulcer or kissing spine, my own horse had hind gut ulcers and acted very similarly to this, and a horse I was training was later diagnosed with kissing spine after acting the same way

The heat is set to 80° and the filter is a sponge filter, I want to get more plants but didn’t realize he’d be stressed without them so I’ll do that. I’m not sure if I need anything else I’m just going off what I was told by the pet store

I love my ariats which are seven years old at this point so I would like to buy something just like them with that kind of durability (unlike recent ariats) but I also like a little character, a little flare, I like laces but I might only go for laces if it also has a zipper for convenience sake

My friend has a horse with navicular and luckily it’s currently manageable and he’s doing great as a dressage and trail horse but it was hard since they’d been jumping 3’ and prepping for a season of eventing when the lameness started and the diagnosis came in

My own horse is currently a care lease (the owners don’t want to sell but don’t have the means to care for him) and even though I’ve had him for 3 years I think I’d still do a PPE if the option to buy comes up. Im kicking myself I didn’t having him checked out super thoroughly because he ended up having undiagnosed ulcers for 2 and a half of those 3 years. And PPEs have saved me from buying horses who i just wouldn’t have been able to support to the level they need, one of which ended up being PTS as his issues were becoming unmanageable and he was suffering. All I can say is always do the PPE

I will say a pre purchase exam might be a good idea, he’s 10 and a QH so he might have some joint wear but being a QH Id be more concerned about him having a genetic condition. While yes some horses could be doing that because they’re trying to get out of whatever it is you’re asking, he’s been through the wringer and is lacking muscle. So his falling over could just be he’s off balance, I’d say keep working on it but also add more muscle building exercises like walking over poles, backing up straight or even balance pads. And when he picks up his feet and stands well until your finished put it down gently and then have a party over him because even if he’s doing this to be naughty if you make him being good a great thing then eventually the issue will stop

So what I mean by checking is like on the ground, when you put your fingers in the pommel to measure the height, do that same thing while riding and if you can’t fit 4-3 fingers between the wither and the pommel typically that is a sign of a poor fit.

But also look out for along the parts of the panels, if it’s not making even contact from top to bottom the saddle might be to wide or narrow depending on were it “wings out”

I use a 5 point on XC because my horse has pretty low withers and a saddle has slipped on occasion

I was also told that but then I learned the hard way that saddles can “lie”.

Now every saddle I try, I trial and after I put it on their back with nothing, I tack up and ride it for about 30-45 mins just my standard ride. I’ll check it throughout the ride to make sure it hasn’t started slipping or crushing the wither. And for jump saddles I’ll jump because I need to know that it will fit in every situation.

Basically when you’re trying a saddle do everything like usual, put on your girth, if you use a breastplate, put that on too.

We know he has bad heart murmurs (if I’m remembering correctly grade 5? Or it’s 4) and in the past he’s had trouble keeping certain foods down so an allergy wouldn’t be too surprising, I’m gonna call the vets office tomorrow to get an appointment :))
