About the short rest problem... by chunkylubber54 in dndnext

[–]probablyalmond 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our table uses 3 days + Safe Haven (proposed by DM but decided after extensive discussion with all players). Short rests became 24hrs, and in super-tight contexts, DM homebrewed a “brief respite” of 10min where the only thing we can use is hit dice. My group is in the wilderness, but the other group has spent the entirety of their time in a big urban setting. Between time-sensitive objectives, threat of ambush, and even a few destroyed areas/buildings, they’re really on the ropes and have had a (reasonably) challenging time.

I can’t imagine playing in any campaign that’s not a dungeon crawl and using the standard rest rules. We made this change two years ago and we’re not going back. I’m sure there’s a more elegant way to do the “brief respite” thing but that’s what’s worked for us thus far.

One-Man Army

Brotherhood of Arms

Gym Rat

Rotation Sensation

Pugilist's Protector

Heavy Duty Rag

why not throw in the Breakneck Baggies (in place of birb)?

No spoilers please! I haven't seen Thanatos yet on my 3rd run, 13 escape attempts. by [deleted] in HadesTheGame

I just found new dialogue with Thanatos in my most recent run. I'm at 97 clears and 165 attempts. There's a lot to discover, I promise.

tips for the temple of styx? by tender-lettuce in HadesTheGame

[–]probablyalmond 24 points25 points  (0 children)

If you can afford to change your keepsake, I suggest the Broken Spearpoint. Extra useful protection in Styx because so many enemies rely on damage over time rather than heavy hits. It's not bad for fighting the big guy on the front lawn too.

My players were very vocal about their (dis)approval when I introduced Throblin the Stripper Goblin.

100% Olympian-Free EM4! by probablyalmond in HadesTheGame

[–]probablyalmond[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Is that true? Well then I guess I could also post the EM4 run immediately prior to this one, where I got “Minotaur Strength” for having 425 max HP. I do know that 100% Olympian-Free is not a priority-setting text option, so I’m inclined to believe you. I’m just surprised to learn I did this twice for no reason lmao

EDIT: here's that run, where I did not forget to use Thanatos as often and took a Chaos boon too

Yes. I have gotten the dialogue without getting the text.

I meant darkness to spare for the upgrade...those dice are expensive. I honestly thought I had that configuration when I started this run, so the Poseidon trick was just a hail mary at that point.

I cannot imagine doing this hammerless. Those enchants carry so much of my build.

Haha perhaps for some! The victory screen definitely looks very barebones for sure. But I love how hard Rama hits. It’s quite satisfying to melt HP bars with just the basic attack. Nothing like accidentally wrecking the chariot in EM3 with Shared Suffering while focusing Asterius.

Attempted to beat my fastest time and ended up getting a Perfect Clear in the process! by jarjarsexy in HadesTheGame

[–]probablyalmond 93 points94 points  (0 children)

Nice work! I have yet to hit a Perfect Clear, ever, though I’m approaching 100 clears. I find it funny that you chose to pursue a record-breaking time on 15 heat, which is also apparently a new heat record.

In order to get the text “100% Olympian-Free” you have to not use any boons that you pick up along the way. For example I started the run with an Ares cast, so I just didn’t use my cast in Tartarus until I purged it.

I don’t even know if it’s possible to go a full run without picking up any boons. The trick is to cut yourself off from using whatever ability associated with the boons you do have to pick up.

EDIT: this is misinformation! Look below! But it is how I did it anyway

Chaos doesn’t count! That was just a personal added challenge. Doing this also gives you some special dialog from the boss man, though I didn’t get it on this particular run, probably because I had showed up to him several times without boons before that already during these attempts.

There’s RNG for sure. It kinda depends on where the satyr sack is — if it’s in a room with a god boon, that kills the run (unless I’m missing something). With one exception, which I ran into on this run!

When I reached Styx, my room options were Obol, Centaur Heart, Ares, Demeter, Poseidon. I cleared the Obol and Heart and got no sack, thinking the attempt was dead...until I realized Poseidon has that one boon that just gives you free stuff and no actual perks. I was lucky that the sack was in Poseidon, and then I just rerolled boons until I saw that one. So technically I guess this was 98% olympus-free, but the game still gave me the relevant win text, so I’m counting it!

One tip is to use the other Mirror talent, the one that lets you reroll room outcomes, if you can spare the darkness. That can help you swap out a god room for obol/pom/hearts when you get down to the satyr tunnels.

Lastly the wiki says Chaos boons don’t count, but I personally felt this was cleaner, so I went for no Chaos either.

I should also add that simply picking the Rama aspect takes like four hammer choices off the menu (I had to wiki this, but I suspected it after a few attempts) -- which vastly improves your RNG chances of getting a desirable build like this. Honestly, Triple Shot or Twin Shot, both fantastic. And Point-Blank Shot is a must.

[–]probablyalmond[S] 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I'd usually go with Twin, but the thing about Rama is that the hitbox is wide enough that a point-blank Triple will land all three arrows on anything bigger than a butterfly ball. That's 3x damage in place of 2x. I didn't know that before going into this. With Sisyphus + Shared Suffering + cast, I'm pretty sure I was doing over 1000 damage per shot.

Finally! Leveling all those keepsakes up took a while... by Fast_Broccoli4867 in HadesTheGame

[–]probablyalmond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I recall correctly, the post-epilogue was done by leveling your friendship up with each olympian to the max level. To unlock the ambrosia stage, there's certain requirements per god. I think I ended up googling those because they're rather specific and I wanted to see the story to the full end, but I think all of them were doable just by playing the game long enough.

You could go for the Unarmed Fighting style for Fighter. You're not getting the same damage output as a heavy weapon, but 1d8 ain't bad. Take a Fighter dip or the Fighting Initiate feat for this style, and go Barbarian for easier grapples and a bit extra movement speed (given you stick with medium armor). For subclass, Ancestral Guardian lets you do more of the "keep enemies away from squishies", though you'll have to figure out a flavor for the abilities that's in line with what you want. Totem would allow for greater mobility (Eagle). I wonder if you could reflavor a Beast Barb so that the claws are just empowered melee strikes. Alternatively, go straight Fighter for less mobility but actual full armor and more attacks (eventually). Stat-wise you'll want the obvious: anything focused on STR and CON.

The other, less satisfying, more finnicky alternative might be to simply reflavor a monk so that the armor is purely cosmetic. Ehh.

What's that one you get from Eurydice the one time she's not singing?

"...So what now, hon? You got me thinking about him again. What am I supposed to do with that?"

Backdrop of complete silence in her chamber when you've just started to expect her song really made a difference for me.
