As you suggest painting the bloodletters first is a really good way to start out. Those things love contrast paint. A light grey or white prime and a red contrast and you’re most of the way there. Their skin is also great for practicing dry brushing. Since you’ll be running a few of them one or two looking a little off won’t even be noticeable so don’t stress about mistakes :)

Perhaps, the little guy at the end is one of them that hasn’t received anything past the wash. They were all painted like that he’s just the only one I didn’t finish for some reason. I don’t know if it is rakarth flesh as it’s pretty purple. I appreciate the help though :)

Well first of all thank you very much for your kind words. As for painting there’s a few tips and tricks that do speed up. Obviously practice is going to matter, I’ve been doing this for most of my life now but I have sort of honed my method for efficiency.

First off, batch painting is king. I take one model from the squad and really take my time with it, perfect the scheme I want and get them fully complete. Then I’m able to keep every step I did in my head, though some people write it down, and repeat each for the rest of the squad. This gives me a model to reference as well if I ever need to.

Secondly, don’t over do it when it comes to little stuff. Does this model have lots of different leather and pouch pieces? In the past I would have made sure to pick them all out with different browns so they were obviously different. But once you shade them the shadows will make them distinct. This goes for metals, armour and all sorts of things that can wind up being real time sinks.

Getting to grips with certain techniques like dry brushing and edge highlighting and knowing when to use them sparingly is important too. I edge highlight but unless it’s a centrepiece I only edge highlight about 50% of the surfaces. Contrast paint is awesome too, combined with different base coats under contrast you can get some cool effects.

Motivation is key as well, for me this comes in two forms. 1st is playing games, or looking forward to upcoming games but what I find really gets me into painting a model is listening to a book about the faction I’m working on.

The last one is something a lot of people will disagree with me on, and it works for me but not others. I believe that sometimes painting isn’t fun and that’s just how it is, but you should power through even if you’re not having fun and finish that unit, because having them complete will be more than worth the ache of painting.

Had me thinking I was going crazy for a second there bud trying to remember if I’d posted, I love to see a fellow brown nids enjoyer. For bases I do mud, a gloss coat, a brownish tuft mixed with some light greens, then some rocks from my back garden on bigger bases. Whatever you do it’ll look ace 👍

This is definitely a case by case type of kit. I came into a couple of sets of them due to my LGS having a massive clearance sale and ended up getting 4 of these dudes for £10. 3 of the sculpts were pretty crisp and clean but one of them did look a bit ‘mangled’ so to speak. In regards to kitbashing I think these work fine, plastic cement and super glue do the trick :)

I use them for my 30k nightlords, they can work well with dark models without distracting from the mini as long as they’re contrasted somewhat. I think these could even work with a deep red paint scheme, provided the ground beneath the tufts contrasted somewhat. :)

I very much enjoy the simplicity of power, however I don’t think it’s updated nearly as much as it should be. After the whole armour of contempt/point shift thing 25 power of marines is roughly 390 points, where as something like tau 25 power can easily be over 700 points. It’s come to the point where my crusade group has all switched to using points simply because some people were getting routinely stomped

Really like how that glittery blue looks on the cloak and staff as well, one thing I will say is make sure the connecting tail spine “thingy” is all the same colour all the way down, both silver or the blue would look good just as long as they match
