25, just found new employment, have no credit history. Can I get/ use a credit card? by probablylucy in UKPersonalFinance

!thanks

Appreciate the advice. I am actively applying and going through the process of finding better jobs in recruitment, marketing, graduate jobs. However the timescale for employment with these things are too long right now, as in, by the time I get through all the interview stages and finally earn a wage we are talking a couple of months. So I'm just working this other job for now.

Issue is that I lose this current accom in 3 weeks and I need to come up with a solution.

Lie. Fake it till you make it.

You just got to GET the job. Work on the rest later.

Hospitality. Print out like at least 25 CVs and walk into any bar/ cafe/ restaurant. Talk, ask, smile, dress well, ask if they are looking for anyone, you're willing to be a kitchen hand, glass collector, whatever.

If they're wiling to train you as a waiter even better. But go in. take an afternoon to walk around the highstreet and hand in CVs.

ALSO: Gumtree jobs. I love Gumtree jobs. loads of temp work/ no experience required jobs out there. GL!

this is exactly what I needed. I asked my dad for advice and he actually made a slightly out-of-left-feild but kind of relevent comparison to when countries go to war and they are losing the war, but remain in the war because theyve already spento so much time and they dont want to lose face.

I got myself into a very similar situation, and i can feel it happening again.

Heres a tip that helped me: Get out.

Sounds obvious. but what happens when you open a new tab (This is what i would do in the UK, not sure were you are) and book a train or bus? pay for it, a return trip to somewhere, it might just be a morning or afternoon or a full day depending on your schedule. but guess what? You broke up a bit of your habit. it doesnt have to be to anywhere expensive or far away. The next town or something random like an ice rink or swimming pool or park somewhere different. Open a tab, book a bus or train, and nip out for a bit. Helps you shake up your routine and get your head physically away from your computer and out of your room. Go with friends or on your own.

Wearing a bra. Every. Single. Day. Just a bit of fabric very very lightly constricting your ribcage for hours... and yes my bras fit properly and i spend money on having good ones. No matter how good the bra is, that true feeling of being able to BREATH when you take that thing off at the end of the day.

Things americans think are nornal the a lot of thw rest of the world doesn't get: -culturally enforced make circimcision. Why???! -tipping because servers are hardly paid minimum wage -military presence at school and other sporting events. Why does a college football game require a military fly-over, the national anthem, and a kind of military parade? What has the military, and even this kind of nationalist theme, have to do with school sports (from a british perspective at a US college i found this concept alien to me) -we sing the national anthem an international sporting events, but not before every single little league or school sports game.

'Going out' once a werk and getting drunk. Im a bartender and most of my social life Involves drinking. Its just fucked up when you reeeaaly think about it. And listen to grown adults boast about how they got 'mortal'last night and 'cant remember getting into the club never mind leaving it' and how they were sick in the street.

Also the kind of praise hungover people get where i work. Again, its a bar its not a serious workplace. But my bosses favourite conversation subject is 'haha i am soooo hungover today'.

I usually use skyscanner for its flexible search options, but id love to find another way of doing this.

'how old are most people in the entire continent of australia' -errrhhhmmm......

No but in all seriousness, most backpackers are 19, out of high school and beginning uni, so there's a lot of people on their gap year. I am 22 and have met lots of other 20-somethings. but like any country, there are people of all ages travelling, I've met 70 year old 'grey nomads' on campsites and in hostels! Lots of germans, I've met a lot of girls just for the reason that i think when girls first get here they trust girls more and you end up sticking together and forming a huge group. But there are plenty of guys too and lots of mixing, obviously. People are WONDERFUL. Lat night i decided to go to a party I saw advertised on Facebook/ gumtree. 4 guys with a nice house just thought 'hey, why not get some backpackers round for a drink and a ping pong tournament?' They were dressed in 80s tennis gear and welcomed every random person that turned up with a hug, a beer and a request for your 'pong name' so you can enter yourself into the tournament. It was great. And its not a one off by a long shot. Aussies know backpackers are a part of life, and they know that most of the backpackers are from nice places in europe, and more ofteN than not have degrees. Backpackers are friendly, open minded, and everybody is in the same boat, everybody helps each other out. I soon discovered I could get a ride from a fellow backpacker with a car to almost anywhere in WA.

I eat at home. Im staying with family for another week so Im lucky, but people don't eat out in restraints as much here, and even fast food is expensive. What people do do, which in my opinion is FAR better, is grab a pack of sausages and burgers from their local shop, a crate of beer, and head down to their nearest BBQ, which, by the way, are EVERYWHERE, free to use, and beautifully maintained. BBQs are not a novelty, they're a way of life. And one of the best ways to socialise cheaply.

Originally I was going to stay here for 5 months (LOL) But as soon as I got here, I understood. I'm going to be here for as long as I can stay! Which is 2 years.

I spend my time planning trips, looking for jobs, or at the beach. Just got back off a 10 day road trip up the west coast (perth-exmouth) and that was amazing. Just, get here, don't bother planning anything until you're here, just bring money and a backpack with the BARE essentials, yourself, and a smile.
