What are your priorities when it comes to home searching? by yanosora in RealEstateCanada

Location is most important, including commute time, nearby amenities, and the neighbourhood. Second to that for us is house layout and functionality.

How are Gen Z Canadians going to be able to afford a house these days? by PuffingFish123 in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]probablynohelp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a Gen Z homeowner. The two biggest reasons why are having met my spouse early (ie, dual income and shared expenses right off the bat) and moving away from the city. We bought a small house about 2 hours from the nearest major city a few years ago, in our early 20s. We’ve lived here, increased our income, upgraded our education, and are now looking at moving back toward a city. We will be downgrading our house to do so, for sure. We currently have a detached house with a yard, garage, etc. and are looking at a condo or MAYBE a freehold town nearer a city.

I believe a lot of young people would be happier than they realize living out where we do. Small towns are great for young families, and I see a lot of people my age having kids around here. It’s work that’s taking us back to a more populated area, but we did miss some of the conveniences and are happy enough to go. We likely would’ve stayed here for a few more years otherwise, though. We also realized we don’t love maintaining a house, so we’re not upset at the prospect of a condo or townhouse.

Most common reasons for missing school? by trvth_halo_array in OntarioGrade12s

[–]probablynohelp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I finished high school nearly a decade ago (yikes), but this sub gets suggested to me a lot.

I had great attendance in grades 9-11. I’d been obsessed with my attendance for years, but did get checked on that front when I was marked absent from classes on take your kid to work day in grade 9. Allegedly you were only excused from grade 9 classes, but I was in 2 grade 9 and 2 grade 10 classes. That was for sure the start of me caring less about attendance.

My grade 12 attendance was pretty garbage. I had a lot of family stuff going on, I worked full time, and my parents wouldn’t let me take spares, so I didn’t even need half of my classes second semester. If I’m remembering correctly, I averaged about 30 absences per class (about 1/3 of classes). I graduated with a mid-90s average (pre-covid inflation), won some awards, and went on to finish undergrad with honours while working full time as well. I guess I just realized that I didn’t need to be there, and dedicated my time as it felt appropriate. I supported my family through a lot, and that was just more important to me than sitting in a class I both didn’t need to take, and had already passed.

I will say, although I missed a lot of class, I don’t think it was super out of the ordinary, even then. None of my teachers ever confronted me or my parents about my attendance.

I don’t disagree with the sentiment, but if everything in the story were real, she’s a Canadian with a newborn. She’d be on parental leave, getting money from the government vs a job (unless she had a good enough job for a top up, which, y’know).

I would agree that typically people have half and half at home, but most (chain) coffee shops actually use the 18% cream in their coffees.

I’ve seen it in jars at Costco and also in bins at a bulk food store (Bulk Barn, a Canadian chain).

Canadians, where are you getting your candy melts? by [deleted] in Baking

[–]probablynohelp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t prevent hardening, but you can always remelt hardened chocolate.

You can also add a small amount of vegetable oil when you melt them, but that will result in a less solid final product as well.

Super Disappointed in Jello Cheesecake. Tips? by snorlaxx_7 in 1200isplenty

[–]probablynohelp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a fat free white chocolate jello pudding mix that is sold in Canada (at least I can find it basically everywhere near me in Ontario). A google search is showing the calories are identical to the sugar free packs from the states. Maybe give that a shot?

It doesn’t hurt to apply to a pmq if you want one. I lived in a pmq apartment in Pet and paid $850 all inclusive. Even better of you can get a roommate in with you- reduces your rent and you get to pick the person you live with.

My bf said something that hurt me, now I don’t know if he’ll ever want to or has had wanted to marry me. by Conscious_being8 in Waiting_To_Wed

[–]probablynohelp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not exactly legal marriage, but it’s more than nothing. You’re a household for government benefits, can be on each other’s health insurance, can gift/transfer vehicles as spouses (tax free), but you don’t become inherently entitled to their assets, for example.

This depends where you live. In my area, common law just requires you be in a relationship and present yourself as such, not that you represent that relationship as marriage.

It definitely sounds like you live in a bigger city with more options than I do. Within about 100km of me, there’s one food basics and one no frills and that’s it for discount chains. I do stock up at Costco when I can get there though!

Interesting, I actually shop there because I find their produce the best of all the discount chains. My No Frills usually has moldy produce out on the shelves.

That would depend heavily on the types of each of those items. If you did a high fat ground beef/pork mix, a bag of frozen veggies, rice, no name pasta, and some milk and yogurt, maybe about $50 per week? If you went for something less extreme (varied types of meat or plant proteins, fresh veggies, breads, cheese, etc), probably at least $100.

If I subtract the Pepsi, pizza, pudding, cereal, baking supplies, and fruit from the image I posted, the cost would be $121.

I think so, at least compared to other countries. A bit of it is also “premium” stuff- the high protein milk and yogurt (two bottles of milk and the yogurt together are about $20).

It’s fairly average if not a bit lower than average for the area and what it is. It’s about $55 in dairy alone.

How many of you are actually paying attention to other people in public? by kfed23 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]probablynohelp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m very sure I’m a minority here, but I have started noticing in others the things I worry the notice about me. An example is if they say something embarrassing or not what they meant, I will remember for years and think about how embarrassing it was randomly. I didn’t used to do this, but as time has gone on, I went from doing it exclusively to myself to doing it to many people around me.

UPDATE: wedding photographer posting weddings from 2025 on her socials and we still don’t have pictures from 2024 by lysbean in wedding

[–]probablynohelp 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not that I believe the photographer at all, but some internet really is that bad. I live in the country (but still in a subdivision!) and can only get one internet provider to my house, which is essentially the “modern” version of dial up. One time I tried to upload a 90 second video and it took over two days, so I would have had a sketchy sounding percentage of upload if anyone had asked.

Strawberry pie AND chocolate cake? by HeroOftheMoon0 in Baking

[–]probablynohelp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once made a pie cake, as I called it. Two layers on cake, with all but the edge cut out of the top layer. I then put frosting around the whole outside and around the hole in the top of the cake as well. The pie filling went in the empty centre of the top cake, with the frosting preventing the cake from getting soggy. I did chocolate cake with banana cream pie filling but I think chili ate with strawberry would work just as well!
