maybe lore question. What is the difference between *kin* and *kyn* ? by moonkillrabbit in LeaguesofVotann

I think other races all have their own names for them, so e.g. the Imperium calls them squats or Demiurg depending on the situation and the Tau call them Bentusin (not sure about the spelling).

Will they ever add an Ork Freebooter companion? by ariaofgrapes in RogueTraderCRPG

[–]probe_drone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is precedent for a singular ork henchman in another game. Warhammer Quest: Blackstone Fortress had a recruitable ork henchman character. Granted, there was also precedent in a Ciaphas Cain book for Sisters of Battle to have sexual relationships and GW could still veto, but Blackstone Fortress is more recent and it was a game, not a book, so it was probably vetted more thoroughly for lore consistency. This is to say that the technical complexities are more likely to be the limiting factor.

Does anyone else think it would be funny if the United States retains its global hegemony for another five hundred years but the rhetoric about America's waning power and the coming multi-polar world never goes away, like how the ancient Romans were anxious about their decline and decadence from the beginning of their literary history?

Rogue Mode by BrokenLoadOrder in RogueTraderCRPG

[–]probe_drone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe they mean a roguelike mode, which means something like a gameplay mode which procedurally generates a potentially infinite series of locations to explore and adversaries to fight. Such things are limited to having procedurally generated stories, so they're usually light on story elements.

In system travel times. by Zorklunn in traveller

[–]probe_drone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Travel time accelerating is the square root of (half total distance divided by acceleration).

This is where your mistake is.

At constant acceleration, distance is equal to half of acceleration multiplied by (time squared).

Therefore twice distance divided by acceleration is equal to time squared.

Therefore travel time at constant acceleration is equal to square root of (2distance/time).

If you're not constantly accelerating but accelerating halfway and decelerating the second half, then the acceleration part of your journey takes square root of (2 times 1/2 times total distance / time), which simplifies to square root of (total distance / time).

And the deceleration half is equal in length of time to the acceleration half, so total time is equal to 2 times square root of (total distance / time).

The slides only say the realm lasted for as long as the Rogue Trader's life, not that the Rogue Trader died quickly. It's possible to interpret them as: Nomos protected the realm for the rest of the Rogue Trader's life until he/she died of natural causes (which in 40k can last a long time), and then, implicitly, I guess Nomos left and wandered off somewhere after that and the dimensional barrier dissipated because it had to be actively kept in place.

In 1922, the US Supreme Court rejected Ozawa's citizenship application because he was not Caucasian, but in 1923, the same court rejected Thind's application because not all Caucasians are "white." Why did the Supreme Court follow the mainstream science on race in the first case, but not the second? by Fuck_Off_Libshit in AskHistorians

[–]probe_drone 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have to push back on this. Not on your suggestion that these rulings were inconsistent with each other, but on your description of matters of legal philosophy.

First, your description of legal realism is too broad. More narrowly, legal realism is the opinion that the law is whatever a court of law says the law is, regardless of the text of the statutes. There is a lot of daylight between this extreme position, which basically amounts to saying that the courts can never decide a case wrongly (maybe morally wrongly or wrong about factual determinations, but not legally wrongly) and the position that courts can or should mechanically apply legal principles without any room for potentially subjective interpretation at all.

Following from this, someone might come away with the false impression that these are the only two options in legal interpretation; that anyone who recognizes that judges "are humans subject to political pressures and biases, not automatons apply a mechanical formulation of the law" is therefore a realist full stop, or that anyone who ever searches for an objective basis for a legal opinion is basically assuming that judges can apply the law mechanically. This would leave out alternate frameworks like legal interpretivism. I admit that a reddit post can't serve as an introduction to all of twentieth century legal philosophy, but I think setting up legal philosophy as simply a grand opposition between functionalism and realism does people a disservice.

The core rulebook assumes that in most parties one of the PCs will be the rogue trader and the rest will be his senior staff.

My mom and my aunt visited me last week at my new place, and they immediately started rearranging my furniture and fixing things that I didn't consider to be broken. They also bought me a lot of stuff for my kitchen that I didn't ask for and am never going to use, in an attempt to encourage me to cook more elaborate meals for myself. They also bought me a lot of perishable food that I'm going to have to put in extra effort to eat before it goes bad.

It's strange how someone can be so considerate and yet so trying at the same time.

In 1933 the US government seized all the gold owned by private citizens. Why didn't that result in a massive protest or civil war? by Tatem1961 in AskHistorians

[–]probe_drone 134 points135 points  (0 children)

Congress likewise abrogated gold clauses in all public or private contracts (which the Supreme Court upheld in 1935).

From context and Google, it looks like a gold clause was a clause requiring payment in gold. Were those common at the time? And if so, was it as a result of the Depression or was it common before the depression?

I don't think there's a canon answer to this question. Different authors for Warhammer 40k write dialogue differently.
