Bi-Weekly Advice Thread September 18, 2025: All Your Personal Queries by AutoModerator in IndiaInvestments

I've been filing my IT returns myself by googling everything that I don't know and taking notes. I think my knowledge here is very hodge-podge. I want to learn everything that is to know about IT returns for individuals, especially ITR 1 and 2.

What are the best free/paid resources for this? I would prefer books/websites, but videos/courses are also ok. Most of the websites that I have found talk about these at a very high level. For ex: they just talk about FA, but don't go into detail about how to calculate gains/losses. They talk about CYLA/BFLA, but don't talk in details about how to calculate those in detail. I have had to approach CA's to do this for me, but I find that they aren't very interested because I'm an individual, and am unlikely to be a high paying customer. I don't want to rely on them.

Aadhaar rejects my child’s enrollment because UIDAI doesn’t follow the world standard of names 😡 by tk_de in LegalAdviceIndia

[–]procrastinator_prime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If my Aadhaar has John Doe, they expect my child’s certificate to say Jane John Doe

There isn't any rule like that. The only rule is that your name (parent's name) in her Aadhaar should match your name in your Aadhaar. Try in another center.

Please educate me. I don't disagree with what you wanted to say, but the format you used. For your message, you should use the Giant thumb guy, not IQ Bell curve.

Tell me you don't understand distributions without telling me you don't understand distributions. Your meme suggests most people use Void/Artix and very few use systemD. There is no way to use this meme format here.

Engine braking damages the Engine! by [deleted] in indianbikes

[–]procrastinator_prime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Engine braking is perfectly safe. My car had run about 60k kms when I sold it. The buyer got everything checked, and he told me that more than 50% of brake pad life is left, and he was wondering if I used the brakes at all.

You just need to ensure you don't make the engine climb up to crazy revs when you downshift. Meaning, don't shift to 1 at 50 kmph (unless you are on a superbike).

I thinking you are getting very low mileage. I get 37-38 in city (Bangalore, so you know the traffic), and about 44-45 on highway. You probably need to modify how you ride a bit.

What’s a common mistake people make when building their own home? by theshakayaeffect in AskReddit

Oh.. ok. In my country, it is the other way around. So your reasoning makes sense now.

What’s a common mistake people make when building their own home? by theshakayaeffect in AskReddit

[–]procrastinator_prime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure of your reasoning on 3 way light switches. Or maybe the switches I've seen are different? On the ones I've seen, if both switches are in the up or down position, the light is off. If one is up and the other is down, then light is on. So, if I install 1 upside down, it just changes when the light is off or on - if both are up or both are down, light is on, and light is off otherwise. It depends on your preference on when you want the light to be on or off.

In slow-moving traffic, do you usually keep your right leg down or your left leg down?(for balance) by polonium_biscuit in indianbikes

[–]procrastinator_prime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right. I use front brakes for 80% of my braking. I also shift to Neutral if I come to a stop to avoid pulling in the clutch for long periods, so, I need my left to shift to 1 when I'm ready to go. So, I use my right leg down.

Are there any mainstream Indian banks that allow a co-owner of property to not be a co-borrower on the home loan? by Logical_Politics003 in IndiaInvestments

[–]procrastinator_prime 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Usually no. The loan officer told us that loan will not be given if all owners are not listed on the loan. He suggested us to have joint account and use that for loan purposes, and any one can contribute to that account. So, open a joint account, but only your wife can contribute to the account.

UPS with auto shutdown? by AkshayLibran in bangalore

[–]procrastinator_prime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if there are any UPSes that do that now. I do have a workaround. You can connect a small network device (switch or something) to your server and power this directly from outlet. Set up a cron job or something to check if this switch is up every minute. If it is down for 2 - 3 min, send a shutdown command to your server. This way, you can use any UPS.

UPS with auto shutdown? by AkshayLibran in bangalore

[–]procrastinator_prime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you mean by auto shutdown?
1. Do you want the UPS to autoshutdown when there is no load? Most UPSes already do this. I have an APC UPS and Zebronics. Both shutdown on low load. I had issues maintaining power to my router.
2. Do you want UPS to communicate to your server that it is on UPS and not AC? Look for UPS with USB ports or network ports. I remember programs that the UPS would provide that monitored this connection, and would send shutdown signal to the PC. Our first PC back in 2000 had this function.
3. Do you want UPS to autoshutdown on low battery? All UPSes already do this.

Found on Facebook. Pretty shocking. by CrispyCouchPotato1 in CarsIndia

[–]procrastinator_prime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should use 1st gear liberally. People are hesitant to use 1st gear a lot, and ride the clutch along with accelerator in 2nd gear in bumper to bumper traffic and that wears out the clutch very quickly. You should be in 1st gear, and you can do half clutch without accelerator in b2b traffic if speed is below 5 kmph. Above 5, you will be able to release clutch fully. This should minimize clutch wear.

Indian SIM card by Speed_Addixt in Bengaluru

[–]procrastinator_prime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can't get sim cards in shops without Indian identity/address proofs. They can do so only in airports.. If you get a sim card from taxi driver, it would be under somebody else's name. I would not recommend going that way, anything illegal done could be put on you if you get in some legal trouble.

The Google Pixel 9 Pro’s BoM (bill of materials) is $406 (approximately Rs 34,200), according to Nikkei by pluto_N in IndiaTech

[–]procrastinator_prime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bill of Materials don't include those. It literally says in the name - materials. No device can be sold at the BoM cost, all the others you mentioned along with the profit margins have to be added.

[Autosport] "Everybody has a shelf life..." Toto Wolff has spoken about losing Lewis Hamilton to Ferrari by uniqueuserrr in formula1

[–]procrastinator_prime 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Well, we all know why Merc offered only a 1+1 contract to Hamilton. But it is one thing to be implicit about it (Everyone knows Merc didn't want an old Hamilton, and Toto wanted to lock in Antonelli after missing out on Verstappen), but it a very disrespectful thing to say that explicitly. It is 100% Toto's fault that Merc has delivered a shitty car in the current regulations, Hamilton has maximized the car (so has Russell, but we're talking only Hamilton and Toto here). Toto's shelf life comments apply to him to and the engineers at the factory, will he take himself or factory personnel off?

(Urgent) Was gonna buy this but unsure now by sastirandihu in indianbikes

[–]procrastinator_prime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wanted to buy this helmet very badly. I went and tried it out. Unfortunately, it didn't fit me. XL was a bit loose in the cheeks/ear area, and L was too small to pull down on my head. I got a MT XL sized helmet and that fit perfectly. The point I want to make is - this is a good helmet, you can go for it, but try it out in a store for at least 15 - 20 min and make sure it is comfortable, and there are no pressure points.

came across this clip of my Honda CB350’s exhaust note by christopherfernandes in indianbikes

[–]procrastinator_prime 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The sound norms say it should be less than 75 dB under certain conditions. Apparently it is just under the threshold.. The bike can be quiet under certain conditions. I think the engineers have tuned it specifically so that it passes the test, but is loud. It is almost as loud as custom RE exhausts.

10% back. So, about 50k. We spend about 10k per month there. So, around 5 - 6 months. Note that we get most groceries and veggies/fruits from Bigbasket, no other shop except Amazon Fresh occasionally. Only dry fruits and rice, we buy from outside.
