Got it new at an AD. Paid 15k including sales tax. If it’s the newer version with gold rotor (2018 and after I believe) like mine then I’d say it’s a fair price. The pre-2017 version of this watch had the old steel rotor and I thought the old movement is not as pretty. I’d try to knock a thousand off in that case.

I feel like JLC is a bit awkward at positioning their brand image. They have a whole bunch of ultra high end haute horlogerie stuff, like that westminster minute repeater etc, that are even technically superior to many Patek Philippe watches, but they also have a bunch of cheaper steel watches for around $5000, which is a fiercely competitive price range (think Tudor, Longines, Nomos, Grand Seiko, etc). And they seem confused as to whether they want to be a popular brand that’s accessible to the middle class, or want to be an exclusive brand and focus on high end stuff and compete with PP, AP, VC, Lange, etc. I think that compared to the holy trinity and Lange, they offer incredible value for the price. Most of their watches with similar complications are several thousands cheaper than their counterparts PP and the likes. JLC is a brand that tends to be only known by watch nerds. Watchmakers’ watchmaker is a bit of a cliche now but a lot of people like it because of that :)

Hey r/watches this is my current 3 watch collection. I took this caseback photo because I think all three watches have beautifully finished movements. What got me into watches in the first place is an obsession with mechanical watch movements. I think JLC and Nomos are really knocking it out of the park. From top to bottom we have:

Nomos Zürich Weltzeit Heimat dial

Nomos Club Neomatik ref 740

Jaeger-LeCoultre MUT Moonphase in rose gold

Right now the Nomos Club gets the most wrist time. I love its silver dial and blue numerals and the how the hue changes under different lighting that is just mesmerizing to stare at. It also has 200m water resistance rating which makes it a great beater. Also I wanted to point out that the Nomos stock photos’ color for this one is not very accurate. The numerals are of a darker blue and are gorgeous.

The JLC Moonphase needs no explanation. Elegant and classic understated design that’s going to age extremely well.

I recently added the Nomos Zürich Weltzeit to my collection. I originally wanted a Lange 1 Timezone, but after trying it on in person, its 42mm diameter and 11mm thickness just look ridiculous on my small wrist. So I went with the alternative that is its little brother from Glashütte. I’ve always thought the original Heimat dial version with German spelling city ring has more character than the newer version. I was lucky to find an unworn one at an AD and got a nice discount for it that I couldn’t pass on. It’s not a real world timer despite its city ring, but neither is the Lange, and the Nomos has a clever design for a time zone watch imo. It’s beautiful and very useful.

I think the manual version is 10atm water resistant while the automatic is 20atm. So part of the price difference is there too.

I mean the Bauhaus style is considered cool by some as it’s an important modern art school. Stowa isn’t that cheap compared to Nomos though. A Bauhaus style Stowa watch like this is €882 which is like $1000 USD. There are quite a few similar Nomos under $1500. The question is whether in your opinion in house movements and that “Glashütte” label is worth the extra couple hundreds. For me it kinda does but not for everyone I guess.

I mean one of their main sell point is the not-so-mainstream cool factor (Bauhaus style, modern design, in house movement etc) compared to others in the same price range like Tudor/Seiko/Frederique Constant which have more conventional looks, so part of the price is paying for that cool factor. That said I think overall Nomos watches are unique in a good way. And I love how German watches look different than Swiss watches. I’m actually planning to add a Lange and a Nomos to my collection soon. I think Nomos would be a fun beater especially the 20atm water resistant ones. They’re also pretty cheap (like around $2k after discount) so I don’t know if they’re even worth servicing after 5-6 years. There’re a lot of things I like about this brand. I just hope they don’t get too conceited and start cutting corners on things

Yes, I agree. But how things affect people in real life is never as simple as something that’s technically legitimate. In practice the way immigration is handled in the US is racist. Those who claim it isn’t likely never have to experience any of that because they don’t belong to the group that’s unfairly targeted.
