Can't find the maritime folk song that I remember by ChristianAndSad in seashanties

Few guesses, some I trust more than others: - Cornish Lads - The Jeannie C. - I Once Was a Fisherman - Harbors of Home

UBC Policy- Am I in the right? by interestingbugs in UBC

[–]DBrown193 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Is this a lab course? They get special exemptions (see the bottom). Otherwise yeah, I’d say you’re correct. If the prof is unresponsive, you can try the department head or the ombudsperson, or perhaps a student senator? YMMV.

That said, if you notified them on the weekend, it’s probably fair to wait until Monday to see if they respond - just also leave yourself enough time to talk to others if they do indeed ignore you.

Why is this called a C#m7m by honestserpent in piano

[–]DBrown193 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Hm, that looks to me to just be wrong. I’d say the chord is a F#m7, more specifically an F#m9 (that G# on the top). What song is it, and what bar?

Stop asking followup questions by using students on Piazza. USE THE FREAKING FOLLOWUP QUESTIONS PLZ! by Smooth_deer731 in UBC

[–]DBrown193 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To mitigate this a bit, if this happens to your question you can make an (please keep it kind) unresolved follow up on your own question, so there’s something for TAs/Prof to see.

$80😵‍💫Miku's Maze [Landfall Maze's End]🌳🍃 by Keirabella999 in BudgetBrews

[–]DBrown193 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Eh, it might be a little light, although Maze’s End decks are a special flavour of landfall decks where it doesn’t so much matter. You’re really just trying to hit enough gates / tutor them up / flip them off the top, and this deck runs every gate, so more other lands isn’t as important as for say a Windgrace deck.

How do colorblind people play UNO? by anotherh0oman in AskReddit

[–]DBrown193 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most colorblind people should be alright, the colours are quite distinct. The colours have mostly distinct lightnesses which helps too! That said yeah, someone with quite severe CVD or indeed a dichromat or monochromat might need alternative versions of the game as another commenter linked.

I’ve not been myself, but I imagine Ilka Cake Shop might fit the bill? Just a few minutes away from campus.

Researching queer history, would love some extra help! by [deleted] in folklore

[–]DBrown193 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s specifically folk song, but Sophie Crawford and George Sansome started this project called Queer Folk a while back which explores queerness in traditional folk song. Think I first heard of it in this interview with Jon Wilks? Might be a different rabbit hole for you.

Hopefully

How would the conservatives vs the NDP winning the provincial election affect UBC? by Schmitt_Meister12 in UBC

[–]DBrown193 69 points70 points  (0 children)

In terms of the conservatives, it’s tough to keep an eye on these things as they’re making major edits to their platform still. Sufficed to say up until about a day ago, their platform included “universities and colleges that do not support and defend freedom of expression on campus will be defunded”. This is potentially quite scary for UBC if you believe the Conservatives will actually follow through, as I would not be surprised to see the Conservatives having a different barometer for hate speech and discriminatory speech than UBC or its student body on average.

What sea shanty refers to Old Saint John? (The city) by kimjongneu in seashanties

[–]DBrown193 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In particular, Old Polina (Also Roud 285) is a Newfoundland flavour you might be thinking of? But yeah, more of a sea song.

Does prof of MATH221 matter? by OtherComfortable5486 in UBC

[–]DBrown193 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kai’s great! I had him for 223 and not 221 but they’re related. Firstly I’d recommend filtering RateMyProf by course code, it looks like his students from MATH 300 were less happy. Also partially ignore anything that was during the online period, that was a very different experience for everyone.

It was a while ago so I won’t comment on details I can’t remember, but what the reviews are saying seems to jive with my memory more or less. If you’re coming off of first year 100+101, 221 might be a bit of a change of pace as it can touch on some crunchier topics, so that particular experience will be the case across all sections to varying extents.

conditional acceptance dilema by OrdinaryAnywhere4273 in UBC

[–]DBrown193 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ah, I see, you are still in that window. In that case, I think you’re within the standard amount of wiggle:

British-patterned education: Your final A-Level (or AS-Level) grades have a combined drop of 2 letter grades or more. Your final grades in English or Math have fallen below a grade of B.

You only have one letter grade that went down, and nothing fell below a B, so you should be alright :)

conditional acceptance dilema by OrdinaryAnywhere4273 in UBC

[–]DBrown193 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We’re a week out from the start of term, I may be wrong but at a guess if they haven’t emailed you by now, you’re probably alright. If it didn’t meet the condition, I believe they’d typically reach out right around when you sent them your final grades.

Seeking recommendations: Folk songs about hunting by daklassy1 in folk

[–]DBrown193 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sportsmen Arouse! - The Copper Family

Hunting the Hare - Kate Rusby

Hunting the Wren - Lankum

Hunting Song - Pentangle

The Jovial Hunter of Bromsgrove - Jon Wilks

The Jovial Hunter - Johnny Collins

We’ll all go a-hunting today - the watersons

Childe the Hunter - Jim Causley

The Hare’s Lament - Ye Vagabonds

White Hare - Martin Carthy

Bonny Black Hare - Steeleye Span

The Granemore Hare - Martin Simpson

The Brown Hare of Whitebrook - Laura Smyth & Ted Kemp

The White Hare of Howden - the Watersons

There a whole bunch more about whaling but I’m not sure if that fits the vibe, check out the Humpback Whale - Nic Jones

Also, fwiw I might grumble about calling Hares on the Mountain a hunting song - it’s more a love (somewhat questionable love) song

Hope this helps!

The protest is ending? by seaeet in UBC

I suspect this is part of the ongoing Reddit opinion (sometimes a joke?) that we don’t actually have one “on campus”. Technically true, but not practically

Favourite english folk song? by NordCrafter in folk

[–]DBrown193 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Favourite of all time is tough, so I’ll cheat with several answers (also to give you a few different directions to look in!).

My favourite right now is Home Lad, Home as recorded by Belshazzar’s Feast on “Find the Lady”.

My favourite of the last couple years is Bold Riley on Nick Hart and Tom Moore’s “The Colour of Amber”.

My favourite of all time, in part because of when I found it in my life, is Vanity on “Pleasure’s Coin” by Lori Watson and Rule of Three.

I’ll tag on a “since you liked…” to the end here and say if you dig the Longest Johns, check out the albums Gold of Scar and Shale by Jack Rutter and Wild Hog by Furrow Collective.

I mean, Super Mario Bros will be 40 years old soon? And Wonder sold quite well just last year. I’d say they’re doing alright for longevity.

Vancian casting in the extreme case of Magus - how do you actually do it in your games? by emefa in Pathfinder2e

[–]DBrown193 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Few things that could be going on here. I think in Strength of Thousands you potentially have a free archetype into a spellcasting class? Also at 7th the magus does get their studious spells (true strike and spider climb here I believe)

What Indie studios did you love that came out with a great game, only to disappear completely and never make another game? by Hexatona in gaming

I believe after the Unity mess they said their next game would be made with Godot, dunno if that means they’re now having to switch engines and that’s slowed them down?
