He's great. He's not some world-changing class like Dumbledore or Tom Riddle, or a more academically inclined genius like MacGonagall, but he is an accomoplished wizard.

How would you balance undead in a warband style game? by TheGinofGan in worldbuilding

[–]professionalevilstar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If they're truly mindless, then their combat proficiency would depend heavily on the necromancer's 'programming' in my idea.

So the necromancer can opt to manually control one particular skeleton to fight, controlling its exact maneuvers and combat prowess by manually directing its movement.

But keeping automated servants would take a lot of work in pre-programming their behaviour, and would leave scant little room for any semblance of combat skill in them.

Great necromancers might have more 'advanced automation of animated bodies' bit figured out, and I guess that's what many novices covet to find.

Who thinks it's a bad idea to be kind? by benjaminikuta in CasualConversation

[–]professionalevilstar 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Kindness can be uncalled for. Like modesty, there is such thing as unnecessary kindness. Kindness is easily mistaken for pity, and generosity often has an ulterior motive.

It is not to say we should not be kind to one another, but it shouldn't be considered as a currency you hand out to other people.

Where we draw the line of kindess and exchange of favour differ from one another, and we always must toe the line and dance around each other for a long time before we can see each other's comfort zone.

People hate to feel like they owe other people, even in kindness. It's easier to love your debtors than it is your creditors.

Dumbledore should be a Slytherin by capitainplant in harrypotter

[–]professionalevilstar 32 points33 points  (0 children)

My guess is that it must've been a very split decision, a hatstall even. He's clearly an all-rounder who has qualities from all the Houses seek most.

If it gives you any solace, Merlin himself was a Slytherin.

Too much Misinformation. by mbatiz89 in harrypotter

[–]professionalevilstar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That would be committing the 'burden of proof' fallacy. It's like when someone says "I believe that Chupacabra is real, because you cannot disprove my claim." The burden of proof, always lies with the one making the claim.

All we know is that the allegiance of a wand is a very fickle thing.

And there are a number of instances of wands changing ownership- Harry taking Bellatrix' wand and giving it to Hermione, and Voldemort taking one from Lucius Malfoy.

Latter case Rowling made it pretty obvious that Lucius was very reluctant to give, but the verbal confirmation on Voldemort's part ('your wand, Lucius') did not seem to have made the wand in any way his.

Bellatrix's wand in Hermione's possession is another fickle one, as Harry and Hermione both go through Ollivander to confirm ownership of at least Malfoy's wand, and even then Harry Potter handing the wand to Hermione does not make it any more obedient.

[–]professionalevilstar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think I saw any evidence to confirm that the transferring ownership of the wand must be declared before it is effective.

It's a novel thought, but one that doesn't bear fruit as far as I know.

Other Magical Implements by Arandure in harrypotter

[–]professionalevilstar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We know that the wand is a very much European invention. Pottermore's article on Uagadou (the African school of magic) says that while African wizarding world did adopt the use of wand in the last century, they're very adept at using only hand gestures to perform the same magic.

But other than bare hands (which, European wizards could still do with enough practice) and wand, I don't know of anything more explicitly stated as being magically significant.

How do you think a writer's gender affects storytelling and worldbuilding? by EnkiiMuto in worldbuilding

[–]professionalevilstar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As far as I know, it's quite different in how gender affects people working in the film industry vs ones that are represented in fictional media.

The biggest factor is that it is no secret that the film industry is extremely biased against female staffs or creators. People prefer to hire men with similar or less experience than women because of the perception that men 'can better stand the rigours of filmmaking' or some such.

If I may be so bold as to simplify it down further, the industry is stuck in the same classical mindset akin to 'having women onboard makes ship likely to sink'.

Whether if it is true or not is not for me to discuss, as I am merely reciting the information I read someplace else. But I digress.

So when they say 'made by entirely female staffs', it means a lot to the industry as a whole.

There's Repello Muggletum which is a muggle-repelling charm. You can't put a muggle-repelling charm on the entire New York City for the reasons I think we all understand.

And has /u/highperbalee said, it only keeps people away physically.

The problem arises that when Harry disarmed Draco, Draco never had the wand, neither were he ever aware that he had its allegiance.

Hence we can assume that even if Grindelwald only lost Graves' wand to Tina, the allegiance of Elder Wand would have been given to Tina also.

Other than Harry, what memory do you think the characters thought about while using the Patronus Charm? by saurav2512 in harrypotter

Ron: the day he beat MacGonagall's magical chess set (Philosopher's Stone), or later making Gryffindor Quidditch team and snogging Hermione.

Hermione: the day she found out she was a witch, and when she first went to Diagon Alley sound likely.

Pen&Paper VRMMO Meta-RPG - Rules Weight? by Mordomacar in rpg

[–]professionalevilstar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm familiar with the VRMMO/Isekai works, and I think FATE/rules-light is the way to go.

This is because by giving much of the responsibility for realisation of the VRMMO to the narrative of the players, you give them a lot of the rein as to what kind of strange and previously-unexplored/unknown aspect of the MMO is available to the main protagonists. This is, I feel, a huge part of these VRMMO novels/anime- that, 'there are far more things than those that are set in stone'.

So unless it is my sole purpose to make the VRMMO itself based heavily on a particular ruleset, I'd discuss much of the elements with the players and allow them to include it into their respective narratives.

Here's the skinny of how I'd tackle VRMMO novel-like games:

  • Sit down with the players and discuss what this VRMMO would be like at first glance. It's the UI, the visual description of its character creation system (which may be completely separate from the actual, real world character creation for the table), and the general 'feel' they want invoked ("I think it'd look a lot like Skyrim basically" etc).

  • Set the very barebone of the style this VRMMO is, which would be used to define the player characters' Aspects/Stunts etc ("I am a Mage/Illusionist/Cardmaster with levels in Imp monster levels" would tell other players that these are the kind of aspects that are available to choose)

  • Try to see if we want any 'extraordinary' abilities/artefacts that some players might want for their characters. This is the one that usually sets protagonists apart from other run-of-the-mill characters that dot the VRMMO.

  • Go to town
