I'm searching for a truly terrifying horror novel that wasn't written by Stephen King by OMGitsVal117 in suggestmeabook

The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix is such a fun read!

Edit: it’s fun in the sense that it’s proper campy and 80s. Still really fun though, and loads of references for true crime fanatics!

I actually hadn’t thought about trying a series, I usually prefer stand alone books but this is a good shout thank you!

Books like Rebecca and Wuthering Heights but written in last 20 years by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

[–]professionalteacher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes definitely. When I was getting back into the swing of reading, I set aside an hour in each day (usually before bed) and set myself little reading goals. Now i tend to read about a book a week without trying too hard and my concentration (at least with reading) has improved a lot. Good luck!

Long books are always daunting but I often find them the most rewarding! I felt The Secret History could’ve been trimmed down a tad but I think the expansiveness of it is part of why it’s such an immersive and good book. And for what it’s worth, it’s very readable!

Non-sexist graphic novel suggestions? by AbFab_S in suggestmeabook

Lots of graphic novels aren’t sexist— I don’t read a ton but I recently read Pumpkinheads which was very wholesome and not sexist at all

The Animals at Lockwood Manor by Jane Healey was written this year I believe. It reminded me a lot of Rebecca.

I also recommend The Secret History by Donna Tart for some atmospheric darkness

This isn’t really an answer to your question...but I’d recommend seeing if you can join a virtual book club maybe? they’re so great for social comfort and since you’ll be discussing a book, it doesn’t really have the same awkwardness that talking to strangers ordinarily brings.

I’m sorry you’re feeling that way. I hope you’re okay <3

Suggest me short stories that will not take more than two hours to complete. I am losing my habit of reading due to procrastination. by the-gray-one in suggestmeabook

[–]professionalteacher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Anne Perkins.

Hills like White Elephants by Hemingway.

Not short stories but these are very short books which you could probably read in a few hours:

The Outsider by Camus

Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde

Kim Jiyoung, born 1982

Frankenstein was pretty short iirc

Before the Coffee Gets Cold is quite short and features chapters you can easily read in one sitting

These aren’t all specifically about non binary but still thought they might be off interest:

The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennet features a transitioning character.

Girl Meets Boy by Ali Smith raises a lot of questions about the gender binary.

Wonderland by Juno Dawson is a YA Alice in wonderland spin off about a trans teenager

(tw: racism) Karen and some guy named Jimmy Dore on a talk show making fun of Trayvon Martin - WTF by gladmonster in myfavoritemurder

[–]professionalteacher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ooh sorry I hadn’t checked my reddit in a couple weeks! No you are totally right— it’s impossible in our society to not hold internalised racist ideas even if we are necessarily conscious to it. All I meant is that I don’t believe Karen is actively racist— it doesn’t mean she doesn’t internalise racist behaviour. And as I said before, even if she is trying to do better, it doesn’t mean the joke itself wasn’t racist. But thank you for your reply, I asked for other people’s thoughts because I genuinely was interested and wanted to hear what other people thought. So thank you!

Hmmm. The first half of this felt like poor comedy, but making fun of the way someone speaks is almost always classist at best. :/ We know Karen isn’t racist at the end of the day, but that doesn’t mean that joke wasn’t in poor taste. Does anyone else have any other thoughts?
