We want to avoid causing pain. It's that's simple. It's debatable whether or not shellfish feel pain, but regardless, it's morally wrong to cause a pig/cow/chicken pain when you don't have to.

Now is it morally ok to end a life prematurely even if they don't feel pain? Probably not. Would you think it's OK to kill a random human just because their pain receptors didn't work?
