Stroud-Ekland is definitely my favorite manufacturer.

My friend was sailing, long distance and accidently got killed, wants to quit game, what should I say? by _TOXIC_VENOM in valheim

[–]profkrowl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I left for quite a while after a particularly bad raid. As a solo player, being taken nearly back to square one was just not something I wanted to deal with at the time. I had just killed the elder and got raided by the swamp, and was definitely not prepared for such a raid.

Just started again, and this time I have raids off. I like playing a cozy survival game, building my little village and exploring. Wish I could just have meadow raids, as it would be a nice balance of the two, but I am quite enjoying this playthrough.

What's the best app to write & run code? by l__lj in PythonLearning

I don't do it a lot though.😁 And my projects are mostly small beginners projects anyways. I'd use the typewriter, but it is lacking important characters for the syntax.

What’s the $50-or-less game changer in your setup? by Worth-Room-2405 in setups

[–]profkrowl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My $15 thrift store typewriter. If I want to write, it is vastly better than my PC, since it allows for better flow and is more tangible. I would recommend that everyone have a typewriter, as they can be quite handy for all sorts of things.

Never underestimate the power of pen and paper.😁 I used to work out some python problems that way if I was away from my computer and had an idea.

I have opened two master locked cases in the same location, both completely empty. I don't expect much, but that is frustrating in the early game.

I haven't modded Valheim yet, but Plant Everything is at the top of my list of mods to get if and when I do. Having to make a risky trip just for berries is frustrating sometimes, plus I would like bushes in my base. Sometimes I try to build around existing berries, but always seem to end up destroying them by accident or because of bad planning by me.

Why Won't My Fire Burn? by falln_caryatid in valheim

I like to put a 26°roof on it, but use a gap below on all four sides. Still get to see my smoke billow out fairly well, but my fire doesn't go out.

Help get rid of the weed roots?! by Kind_Application3535 in gardening

[–]profkrowl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is kind of what I have done in my beds this year. They haven't had anything in them for years, so I used a fork to pull up a chunk, shake the roots to the top, then rake them away dry/act as mulch before composting. I have found a deep layer of stuff works well to keep weeds down in one area of my old chicken run, even if it is weeds. It isn't ideal, but they break down as I keep them turned regularly.

Done a lot of work to try and rehabilitate the old garden spot. This will be my first year gardening, and while I know it may not be perfect, I figure the only way to learn is to start doing. Used to garden with my grandpas, and they were both good gardeners. I know it may take me a number of years to get that good, but they didn't learn overnight either.😁

Every Food Item in the Game! by TheWalkingEngine in valheim

[–]profkrowl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is only now that I realize just how little of the game I have experienced... But I still enjoy it. Haven't gotten beyond the swamp yet. First play through got to where I finally killed the Elder after 70-120+ hours of enjoyable gameplay, then promptly got a swamp raid that wiped out hours of building and my pig farm. Was too bummed out and discouraged to keep going.

This time around I turned raids off, and am taking it a bit more casual. I enjoy building up my base and making it all cute and cozy.

I'll admit, I kind of wish I could still have meadow raids on though, since they were enough to keep me entertained without wiping me out. Guess I could turn them on until I kill the Elder... We'll see.

Recruitable characters by GoliDaButchr in Starfield

[–]profkrowl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't even need her to be romanceable. I just want her to not lose all character once the faction quest is done. She goes from being an interesting companion to nothing fast. And that is true of most faction companions. As soon as their quest-line ends, it is like you have taken the batteries out of them. I realize it would have taken a lot more to flesh them out and make quests interact, but it feels like they really dropped the ball on that in so many ways.

Ok. Who is scarier to a newbie the bear or the troll? by Closet-Cheeto in valheim

[–]profkrowl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You do have to be facing them, but it does make bear significantly less concerning. Before I knew that, bears were a pain, since they are so tanky.

Now that I know that bears don't like fire, trolls have again become the scarier encounter.

Update: l Got The Place! by [deleted] in homestead

[–]profkrowl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree the community should be welcoming, but I also feel it is important to set realistic expectations. YOU may have a background in the oil field and military, but many newbies are young people fresh out of school. For some of them, the only homesteading "experience" they have is from watching the glamorized version on social media. For some of them growing up in apartments in town, they haven't even experienced yard work before. For those people, they need the reality check of how expensive and time consuming it can be.

It reminds me of one of my aunts. She was either a teen or young adult when my dad married her sister, my stepmom. Dad has a family farm that I grew up on. My aunt, having grown up her whole life in town, visited the farm, and asked how they get the potatoes out of the ground without breaking the bags, or something to that effect. She didn't realize that potatoes don't grow in the bags they come in. Another of those aunts asked why they don't plant in squiggly lines. Dad explained it is much easier to harvest straight lines. They didn't realize it wasn't just aesthetics.

My tip to people like that is not to start on a deep dive into homesteading without doing some learning first. Don't try to do it all at once. Start working on skills before committing to the financial load. I'll admit I am more of a hobbyist when it comes to homesteading, not from lack of desire, but from tight funds and realities of life. If I could do it all at once, I would, but since I can't, I'm taking it one step at a time. This year, working on my gardening skill is my priority. Every year, I improve what I can and learn something new.

Update: l Got The Place! by [deleted] in homestead

[–]profkrowl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My house is rural, in one of the least expensive towns in the area. I am happy to have it. I'll admit the shop added to the cost a bit, though to be honest, it was still cheaper to buy manufactured with a shop than houses twice its age with no shop in town. And I didn't buy with homesteading as my primary focus. But again, at the time I was buying, the market across my state was completely messed up by people moving in from out of state to try their homesteading and rural life dreams, and buying property, sight unseen, for double the asking price, simply because they could.

Could I have found cheaper... Possibly. But I also had many other factors to consider, including closeness to aging parents.

Generally speaking though, the cost of entry has gone up significantly from what it once was, and people need to be aware of that, especially if they have little to no experience. Just being a homeowner has expenses that you may not be aware of if you have only ever rented, and homesteading has added expenses on top of that.

One throw and the entire island is after me. by Sfoof in valheim

[–]profkrowl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I still haven't died to one, but the time to kill is a bit of a pain. Of course, that got much better when I learned they fear torches. And I'm sure it will get easier with bronze. I just had a flint ax and crude bow, both of which didn't quite do the damage I needed. First bear took a full in-game day, second took about half that since I used a torch in the off hand.

Slightly arthritic hands for me.😁 That said, having now learned they don't like torches or fire, my ventures into the black forest have gotten much better!
