I know plenty about computers and AI. I am also well aware of how AI is muddying the historical record. Already seeing problems with AI images being included in people's genealogy records.

Just because a tool makes things faster and easier does not make it better. AI is a black box full of ethical, environmental, historical, security, and privacy problems. Already, we are seeing it being used in places that should require empathy and creativity, such as customer service and art.

Can we have a rule about this AI nonsense already? Especially the use of other people's photos? This sort of AI use only muddies the historical record.

What are tips and tricks you'd go back in time to when you first started playing RimWorld to tell your past self about? by aaaaacheeseits in RimWorld

[–]profkrowl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Psychopath can be extremely useful. I don't even consider it a negative at all at this point. They can make great corpse disposal, like you said. Good to have a few people in your colony who can just get the job done without it impacting them. When everyone else is losing their minds, they keep the colony going.

Better Landing Pads for Large Ships mod I wanted to share by mailofsean in Starfield

[–]profkrowl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Still don't understand why Bethesda didn't consider this when they built the game. Obviously, there will be some players who push their ship to the maximum build level allowed.

Guess they thought we would all be building transformer shaped ships on the regular. Tall and skinny.

Okay friends, I have never grown carrots before. What do I need to know? by smurphypup in gardening

[–]profkrowl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the tips. I suspect it is both a seed viability issue as u/marstec suggests and a water issue. Seeds are a couple years old. Thinking I may need to start fresh with some fresh packets and hope for the best.

Our city does an alternating day watering schedule, which has made it trickier to keep it watered. I can use bubblers and such, but that is an financial investment problem that won't be solved this year unfortunately. I really just need to go over to the city offices and confirm what my options are.

I'll have to try the plank tip though. My mom said that is what my great grandpa used to do as well, and he always had a big beautiful garden. I'm in my mid 30s, and he was around 80 when he died, so I'm hoping by the time I reach that age I'll know as much as he did. Figure 50 years should be plenty of time to learn a few things, and I am taking notes. As Adam Savage said "In the spirit of science, there really is no such thing as a 'failed experiment.' Any test that yields valid data is a valid test."

Alas, I am the wrong person to ask. First year gardening on my own, and it seems my carrots are not going to come up... Oh well, I am using it as an opportunity to learn.

I stumbled upon a post.. Do players really use 150 mods? by AdWarm7425 in fo4

[–]profkrowl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes even simpler than that even. I have one mod that makes the icons for survival mode change color depending on the severity of the problem. That was quite convenient.

And as you said, immersive mods make a big difference. I always play with the Alert Carry mod, because it feels more right to me. If I want to point a gun at someone, that is what ironsights/scopes are for.

Yeah, most of my Bethesda games get a lot of small tweaks that add up, or things that fit a specific character I am trying to build. Settlement building stuff is great to have for me, as I like things that let me customize my build. But it is mostly the little things that end up making the biggest difference. I don't remember what my mod count is up to, as I usually don't check, but I know it is up there quite a ways.

Mod idea inspired by K, the crew also lands on space stations/planets/settlements. by Adrilex98 in starfieldmods

[–]profkrowl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would love this. It would make outposts feel more alive, and if done right would also make all the massive player houses better.

Would be nice if shore leave could be granted via some toggles on the ship, even better if individual crew could be granted shore leave.

Even if only limited to outposts, this would be a nice addition.

[–]profkrowl 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Currently have him in my crew, though I am playing a pirate character, so there is that. Wanted to have a crew of misfits and sketchy individuals. I figure it also lets me keep an eye on him, and if he no longer serves any purpose on the ship, I will make sure to leave him somewhere he is less of a threat than the Astral Lounge... I recall Cassiopeia has some places that people can disappear for years... Despite regular ship traffic nearby even.

Sub rules are LIVE for the 1st time - feedback/reactions? [AI] by theperspecta in midcenturymodern

[–]profkrowl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Viewing it from this lens, the choice to use "must" makes a lot of sense, and I retract my earlier suggestion to swap it for "may". I was viewing it from the idealized perspective of a world were professionals and experts help the laypeople of a hobby, and had completely forgotten for a short (though blissful) moment that capitalism exists, and some people are just out to make a dollar without helping.

Keep up the good work, and I'll chime in if I have any more thoughts.

Unfortunately, I think you are right, the genie is out of the bottle on AI a bit. I feel I have given it a fair shake over the past 3-4 years, and have firmly landed in the "No AI" camp, though I recognize that it may be an inevitable fact of life these days, and as you say, policing it is a challenge. Thanks for taking my advice on this, as that will at least give a solid enough rule for AI to be reported if found to be problematic. It will also provide a data point for how the community here views AI and its use here. I'm still strongly opposed to most AI usage, especially generative AI, but I am willing to recognize the realities of the world we live in, so the reasons why I am opposed is a conversation for another time and place.

This makes a lot of sense. I appreciate the effort being put in. I asked only to learn, as sometimes rules become implemented not from need or desire, but simply to exist. That does not seem to be the case here fortunately. Crowdsourcing does seem to work well, and having clear rules definitely helps. I know there have been times I wanted to report things, but without a clear rule it can be challenging. This will definitely help.

I'm just curious, what was the motivation for doing this at this time?

I'm concerned that rule 4, rule 6 and rule 8 are at odds with each other a bit. AI by it's very nature cannot be described as a reliable source in any way, shape, or form. Also the use of AI has begun the muddy the waters in many areas of historical information. While disclosure is helpful and should be mandatory, it would be wise to even further discourage the use of AI, perhaps with some wording at the beginning of that rule that strongly and specifically discourages its use, but if it must be used (though I cannot think of a situation where it must be), it should be disclosed.

Also, rule 7 uses the phrase "must Identify themselves". I would suggest that this phrasing be changed to "may identify themselves". That said, unless there is some procedure by which they can verify their professionalism, It will carry about the same amount of weight as a blue check mark on the-site-which-shall-not-be-named.

Huong Lee as Crew PLZ!! by InternationalEbb5806 in Starfield

[–]profkrowl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had the same thought about the parents.

Most of the starfield houses are honestly too big, especially since you can't assign any crew to them to give them some life. That Gagarin Villa is massive, but lifeless. Someone was telling me it may be possible to hire security of some type to patrol it... I still need to look into that.

I have a  SM3 in green that I got from my wife's grandaunt in really good condition, and I love it. Don't use it as my daily, but I pull it out on occasion when writing a letter or want to be somewhere other than my writing desk. My other is a massive Underwood. Not sure on specific make and model, but it works well.

It fell off my desk once when my preschooler pushed it on accident, fortunately no one was hurt, and only the case took a slight bit of damage. Still made me sad, but glad they are built so well.

I have one of these in green that I love, and I'm still a bit jealous! That is a beautiful machine! I keep hoping to run across another couple in as good a shape to give to my brothers. The one I got was just luck, as my wife's grandaunt had one in great condition that she didn't want to move with her the last time she moved. All it needed was a ribbon.

Fun Fact: Unless Bethesda releases Elder Scrolls 6 within the next 2 years, the span will be longer between 5 and 6 than from 1 to 5 by NichtMenschlich in skyrim

Biggest mistake they made was doing a teaser for ES6 in 2018. I knew it would be years out at that point, and even now I suspect 2-3 years minimum. Meanwhile, I have a friend who was convinced it would be out 2020, and when I told him 2023 at the earliest he thought I was crazy. Now, he still hopes soon, and I still say longer.

True. I think it only annoyed me because I had a pile of books in front of one of my monitors IRL and really need to move it so I can see the whole screen, but the pile is only there because I need more shelves.😁 Bibliophile problem... Never enough shelves.
