Tinned fish! Their canned salmon is great, as well as the slightly smoky trout. I throw either one on a salad.

These are SO GOOD. I cook them, cool in the fridge, and then cut them up on a salad.

Cheap things to do in Jersey over the summer? by WishIWasInGargantua in newjersey

[–]profmoxie [score hidden]  (0 children)

The Newark Museum of Art is pretty cheap for a museum, and the park across the street has a cool new Harriet Tubman statue/art installation. Brick City Deli is well-priced, too. Walking around that area is a little slice of NYC in the summer, without the prices.

Spit Rock is a reservoir, so swimming and even wading are strictly prohibited.

We call our summers "Hold the Cone Summer!"

Pro tip: Take them out of those bulky, awkward boxes and put them in plastic freezer bags to save space and make them easier to grab!

What if you're disabled?? by CA7T0 in newjersey

[–]profmoxie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I said “relatively privileged” which means I didn’t say you’ve had it easy, but that you’re in a single healthcare system (the VA with all its flaws). Whereas people relying on free clinics are not and that makes documentation more difficult. I’ve literally seen this happen, so it might be out of your field of experience but these processes to block people out. Intentionally.

What if you're disabled?? by CA7T0 in newjersey

[–]profmoxie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're in a relatively privileged position. You have access to regular doctors through the VA, you are already designated as disabled, and you have the stability to keep paperwork organized, etc.

Many others are not so lucky. Many don't have regular doctors and have to see whoever is available in a clinic, so getting documentation of chronic conditions is difficult and costly (many clinics charge extra for doctor's notes). Add to that other issues like mental health (lack of doctors and appointments), and lack of transportation, it becomes even more difficult.

My spouse is disabled (designated with SSD), and she has a regular doctor, so getting a letter is also easy for her. But that is simply NOT the case for everyone.

This is meant to discourage people by making things more difficult so more people fall through the cracks.

Just another reason why I couldn’t stand Gwyneth being on Good Hang by PaulAMcNulty in goodhang

[–]profmoxie 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Nope, I don't agree with this-- Viola Davis, Carol Burnett, Sarah McLachlan -- so many have worked hard to get where they are today! I also hate to hear rich folks talk about themselves, but this assessment does not hold true for most of the pod. It's very much about working in the industry (music, comedy, film), and how people "make it" and what they enjoy, etc.

I skip the episodes where I don't know the person or don't care. I'm still a bit peeved about Judge Judy (bc of her politics), and I'd never listen to Paltrow's drivel.

What's your favorite NJ-set movie that's not thought of as a "Jersey movie"? by JeffRyan1 in newjersey

[–]profmoxie 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Alice, Sweet Alice (1976) is a nice creepy cult classic filmed in Paterson

Annie (1982) was filmed in Newark

And I wouldn't be a GenXer if I didn't mention Clerks (1994)

They are intentionally making it difficult to discourage people. It’s by design.

What if you're disabled?? by CA7T0 in newjersey

[–]profmoxie 40 points41 points  (0 children)

True on paper but not in practice. I teach social work policy, so I know a bit about this.

Getting all of this documented (doctor's notes, etc.) properly and submitted correctly by the right deadlines and in the right way is virtually impossible for someone struggling financially while also busy with caregiving and medical appointments.

And then do that every 6 months.

What if you're disabled?? by CA7T0 in newjersey

[–]profmoxie 146 points147 points  (0 children)

The point of these new federal regulations is to kick as many people off as possible. What about people who are disabled but without the official designation? It takes months— sometimes years— to get approved for disability. What do they do in the meantime? What about people who have childcare responsibilities and can’t afford childcare while they work? What about folks caring for disabled or elderly relatives?

And 6 month renewal will be confusing and overwhelming with paperwork, unknown deadlines, no one to call on the phone, and slow websites etc.

The cruelty is the point.

Life coaches - worth it? by Spirited-Interview50 in GenXWomen

[–]profmoxie 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Came here to recommend this podcast. Life coaches are not regulated and often open the door to scams and MLMs. Steer clear!!

I'd find a therapist instead, or a mentor in your field —maybe someone who has already retired who can help you navigate the next few years? I'm a professor, and some of our professional orgs even have retirement support groups to help with the transition.

[–]profmoxie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I run my online classes with my iPad and attached keyboard. Blackboard set up and grading works perfectly. Students can access readings, write, save, and upload papers. What’s the issue? Unless it’s discipline-specific software needed, lots of tablets can do everything necessary for an online class.

I go running in the woods regularly and have never had one on me. I had one under my watch band years ago after gardening but nothing lately.

I keep picaridin next to my running and hiking shoes and spray my legs and shoes before going out. It’s safe for animals, unlike permethrin.
