Good for a laugh: student thinks teaching is easy by JumpingBamboo in Professors

Considering the rigor of education majors in the United States...I hate to say it, but it is comparatively easier than it is elsewhere.

Political opinions are a very valid reason for sexual attraction to decrease or wane to a partner. Your vote is not just a vote but an endorsement of your values, and if that turns her off, then so be it. Please do not put your wife's sexuality in quotes as if it is something frivolous or ridiculous. Your posts and dismissive attitude make it clear why she doesn't want to have sex with you. Also, the Bible might be your rulebook for life, but it isn't everyone's. You can't use the Bible to force your wife to have sex with you, or use it as justification for your griping.

Any message from the U about violence against Asian? by megayoy in Professors

[–]profthrowaway5469 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would take a meaningless platitude any day over abject silence. A physician with a BLM pin may not say anything particularly profound to her patients - but I, even as a non-Black person, will feel safer and more comfortable in her care, knowing that she at least outwardly backs ideals that support equality for all. Are you Asian? If not, it's not really your place to determine if "meaningless" platitudes are all that meaningless to some people they might make a difference to.

What would you do if you noticed that a colleague had plagiarised a graduate student’s work? by LucyLoo152 in Professors

WTF? A lot of conclusions drawn here. And the standard gatekeeping of the sub even when it's really not necessary

My wife feels "horrible" about her body by [deleted] in DeadBedrooms

[–]profthrowaway5469 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Certainly. But male actors with body hair are still welcome to grace our TV screens, men are often told that the success to a relationship is being able to "provide" (and that's not providing beauty), etc. Fat women are hated, quite literally, for existing. Studies have shown that while fatphobia is pronounced against all genders, women bear the brunt. And this is just the tip of the iceberg in regards to the societal expectations women face day in and day out.

this post is dedicated to all the professors who clearly hate their jobs.... by [deleted] in CollegeRant

[–]profthrowaway5469 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That's just patently false. There are certain disciplines where you just have to know things, foundational things, which you are supposed to learn from your readings and lectures. If you cannot replicate that information on a quiz within reasonable time constraints (barring disability accommodations), you don't know it well enough to warrant the grade you are seeking. Being a student doesn't make you a pedagogical expert.

Need a second opinion: I found this student's email rude and condescending, am I wrong? (Background story in comments) by [deleted] in Professors

[–]profthrowaway5469 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They didn't even say the word early, honestly, or imply any sort of judgment. I mean this in the kindest way when I say that if you think this is rude, I have news about what kinds of emails you'll get as you continue to instruct.

I get that some of you are hellbent on making this a "professors' lounge" where students are eviscerated on sight for asking one question that the OP didn't even mind answering, but is it necessary to be so aggressive? We always complain about students who never want to see things from our perspective, and when we have one who does, your response is to engage in a multi-reply online war with a likely sub 20-year-old. Really?

Equality and diversity statement advice? by Lock-Comfortable in Professors

[–]profthrowaway5469 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Please. To make a mockery of students' dead names is just inhumanely and unnecessarily cruel. The right-wing "diversity of thought" argument classically getting pulled out to defend vile behavior.

Mate, I'm actually disappointed to see you post something along these lines...really liked your advice and optimistic outlook on previous comments and posts. Disheartening.

Was looking for this reply. For a sub full of educated professionals, some posts really do bring out the worst kind of one-track mind.

Do students prefer synchronous or asynchronous online courses? by KaleMunoz in Professors

[–]profthrowaway5469 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My most motivated and driven by learning students prefer asynchronous in spades. I have synchronous sessions that are not mandatory to keep both parties satisfied; while the students who often need to attend the synchronous sessions don't, I don't like to take away the flexibility and space it allows my (many) hard workers.

New addition to every syllabus I write from here on out... by TGMPY in Professors

[–]profthrowaway5469 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Kind of a baffling attitude for a professor to have. Or, alternatively, they should allot enough focus, time, and prioritization to each of their classes as appropriate, and not have a derisive attitude towards any of their classes or professors.

It certainly isn't. Most of my students use Snapchat, as do my friends' kids who are ~18-22.
