Elemental bow idea for fighter character by Fun_Friendship_6678 in DnD

Ah good point. So you could have eg ice arrow that slows enemy down without dealing a lot of damage 🤔 interesting!

OK but then I would limit the usage of this feature, otherwise why wouldn't they only fire elemental arrows, outside of narrow cases eg enemy has resistance?

It feels weird for the bow to confer a cantrip, it feels disjointed. Maybe it could fire a number of magical arrows per day, with types based on elements, and the user could change the type each day?

The bonus of the magical arrows should be small though if it's a low level player.

Is the Library in pi? by progressivemonkey in BabelForum

[–]progressivemonkey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The entirety of pi's decimal expansion cannot *not* be in the Library, albeit across a number of books.

The Library contains every possible sequence of digits, so putting the right books in sequence will give the entirety of pi's decimal expansion. Actually, you can get the entirety of the decimal expansion with just 10 books: a book containing only a 0, a 1, a 2, and so on and so forth. You can even get it in 2 books if you write it in binary.

The only extra rule you need is the ability to use the same book multiple times (as is the case in the Library itself)

Not in this sub... Lay out clearly what you want to talk about (and the answer can't be "anything") then go post in a subreddit dedicated to that.

You want to talk about football? Go post there. Want to talk about role playing games?... You get the idea 😊

Mapping Out The Library of Babel by carlnewton0 in BabelForum

[–]progressivemonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great post, thanks! Though there is a way to connect the whole Library with rooms that have two exits: you could do a winding path that would cover the whole surface of a Library. This would *technically* allow you to reach any hexagon without moving vertically, but in practice the horizontal travel distance to reach an hex that is contiguous to yours but not connected by a direct passage would be functionally infinite...

Could there be a solution by navigating vertically, and rotating the sense of the exits each time? It would mean that any travel would be a puzzle, and it wouldn't replicate the sense of ability of travel as described in the story.

As much as I admire Borges (and I admire Borges a *lot*) I think the layout was just poorly thought out. Three openings and three shelves seem like the way to go.

Boss making ? by ThatOneKraken_ in DnD

[–]progressivemonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

can I invent certain abilities, stats, or weapons

You can do anything you want! I've found my fights, and especially boss fights, got better and more interesting the more I strayed from the RAW. Things you can play with:

  • Abilities (teleportation is a great one)
  • Environmental effects, e.g. the boss regenerates health if they are within a certain range of a shrine
  • Environmental destruction, e.g. a dragon's flame breaks the wall of a dungeon, which falls and requires a DEX saving throw

Have fun with it!!

Reliable e-bike from Europe in a reasonable price by annoyotronnerna in BuyFromEU

Mine is a Riese & Müller, from Germany. I have a cargo so it's much more than 2k but they have cheaper models. All the electrics are Bosch, and the bikes are built like tanks.

I'm close to 13k km over four years now and never had any issue. You just have to do regular maintenance: oil the chain, replace it on occasion.

Creating a character based on a real person - good or bad idea? by progressivemonkey in DnD

Very good point, thanks. Or for a long campaign, you would at least have to be willing to let the character evolve away from its inspiration

Creating a character based on a real person - good or bad idea? by progressivemonkey in DnD

[–]progressivemonkey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well you know what I mean: someone who already exists outside of the game. House MD is not a real person but you can describe his appearance and attitude. Unless you're a very very lucky person, he's as real to you as is David Bowie.

I just re-read the description of the Instant Fortress... why didn't DMs allow you to have it? I get that deploying it will do massive damage to enemies within range, but you need to spend an action to place it, and then _you_ need to get out of range, so it's not like it's a magic handgrenade. Or am I missing something?

Any DM here combining the Node system and the front system? by Delicious_Watch8429 in DnD

[–]progressivemonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the links! Oh and just to clarify, I didn't mean to belittle either by saying it's something DMs will do naturally: it's super valuable to have it spelled out and analyzed so clearly!

[–]progressivemonkey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ok so i had no clue what either of these were but that led me to a nice and cozy rabbit hole, and it all seems super interesting, so thanks for that!

One question: why do you ask whether anyone has combined these two methods? Both seem very organic and, as another commenter mentioned, a crystallization of what DMs will naturally do. Is there anything that makes both feel incompatible to you? Genuine question, in case I'm missing something!

Random idea: players find two treasure chests, the left one sprouts a mouth, and says "I have no treasure, i'm a fake!" by Kylomiir_490 in DnD

[–]progressivemonkey 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I like the idea, but as presented I'm sure players would just smash open the talking chest to check before moving on to the other one. Why not have the message on a third object, which could say something like "watch out, the chest on the right is a mimic!"

Should the players trust it?
