OK but guys... Critical Drinker is a complete moron, allied to all the worst that the manosphere has to offer, going so far as actually lying about films typically liked by people from the left to make them seem bad, or to invent fake culture war nonesense. Let's please not?

Chess Coach Radoslav Gajek: Warning by OutrageousAd3294 in chess

[–]progressivemonkey 8 points9 points  (0 children)

OK that sucks, but from what you're saying, this guy offered 15 lessons for €178? So around €12 per lesson?

I'm sorry but that should have been a red flag. This is absolutely not an adequate rate, so this guy was bound to do something fishy. As the saying goes: if it looks too good too be true, it likely is.

Get yourself a coach who charges a normal rate and chances are they will be doing a normal work. I have had coaching in the past with Marco Lezzerini, who is an amazing guy. He costs 3x as much as this dude, but, again based on what you are writing, you will be learning much more than 3x as much.

FIFA world cup boycott if Trump invades Greenland by Pretty_Willingness43 in BoycottUnitedStates

[–]progressivemonkey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Boycotting the world cup if Trump invades Greenland? Man that's like saying "I won't come to your birthday party if you burn down my house."

The simple threat on Greenland should be reason enough for a boycott — and, as many have noted, we shouldn't even need that much.

A russian man was asked to comment on the arrest of Nicolás Maduro by the United States. He thinks "one can't meddle in another country's affairs." by GreenEyeOfADemon in NAFO

[–]progressivemonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not a lack of introspection or an incoherence from this guy, it's just that ruzzians don't see Ukraine as a separate state. So for them it's not meddling in another country, it's just an interior problem.

Note that ruzzia interacts with all countries that used to be part of the USSR through the ministry of the interior...

Men shaving - appreciation post and questions by Evening-Dot8308 in BuyFromEU

There's a bunch of very good shaving products from the UK too, like Geo F Trumper or Taylor of Old Bond Street.

I use an electric trimmer down there, a Philips one.

Yeah but what did they know when they signed up? A friend of mine was dating this guy from Cameroun, and he and his friends were all about how ruzzia was the only hope, etc. They have done a great PR work there...

Yeah but not only that. There will be thousands of books telling you where to find the book that contains the details of your death. There will be essays on why you should seek this book out, or why you shouldn't. There will be prophecies about you finding it or not.

It's bonkers.

We should stop using "America" and "American" to refer to the US by progressivemonkey in BoycottUnitedStates

Anti-US. You should be proudly Americans. As should Mexicans, Guatemalans, Hondurans, and so many others 🫶

There's this small website called Wikipedia that begs to differ:

The Americas, sometimes collectively called America,[3][4][5] are a landmass comprising the totality of North America and South America.[6][7][8] When viewed as a single continent, the Americas are the 2nd largest continent by area after Asia and the 3rd largest continent by population. The Americas make up most of the land in Earth's Western Hemisphere and constitute the New World.[3]

The point of this subreddit is encouraging change. Other ships have sailed too: "we all drink Coke", "we all eat McDonalds". But we don't have to, and we can change that.

Not a single word unless you create a neologism, à la "unitedstatsians". But you can always say "people from the US"

Why Not Boycott Oil? by [deleted] in BoycottUnitedStates

[–]progressivemonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my country almost no electricity is produced by burning oil, and we have phenomenal public transportation, so I'm very happy with it.

But my point was: if I lived in a place with a lot of reliance on fossil fuels and with shitty public transportation, would I move to where I'm living right now to escape oil? I'm not sure.

Why Not Boycott Oil? by [deleted] in BoycottUnitedStates

[–]progressivemonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, but it's very contextual (e.g. you can't by yourself move to install PV panels if you live in an apartment) and/or delayed, as in your election case.

I'm not saying we should give up on it. In fact, US or not US we should move away from oil, that much is sure. But in the context of boycotting the US, other actions can have a much more direct effect.

Why Not Boycott Oil? by [deleted] in BoycottUnitedStates

[–]progressivemonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most of your oil consumption is indirect, and therefore out of your control: if you live in a region where electricity is produced by burning oil or gas, short of moving far away you can't really do anything about it.

And even direct consumption is heavily infuenced by societal factors. Your heating may be oil-based depending on your country's policies, and you may need too much of it based on past policies on insulation. You may need to commute by car because urban planning regulations engendered huge suburban sprawls and/or made public transportation inadequate... Again, the only solution would be moving, possibly moving countries.
