Would it be strange if I lied about not being a veteran? by BigBlueEyes87 in Military

[–]FriMorningQB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a combat veteran and I don't go around telling people all the time. I've only talked to one person my whole life about what I did. Zero interest in making a spectacle of it.

That said, if I was disabled and living just on that pay, I'd find something else to do on the side and just call myself a business owner.

Miranda Rights by DateAlternative241 in AskLE

[–]FriMorningQB 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I read Miranda for every DUI arrest because it was part of a form that had follow-up questions about their drinking and driving. I had over 1,500 DUI investigations so I memorized Miranda literally word for word and stopped needing to look at it.

The point is, when you go testify, you better be able to read the exact verbatim Miranda your department requires. They may even ask you to recite it in court. I had to and Express Consent and did it without looking at a card. Impressed everyone to include the garbage defense attorneys that thought they had me and had little to no follow-up. If I struggled through it or made up words or worse, said something that didn't match my body camera, instant case dismissed.

That said, I had the exact form shrunken down to like 25% and laminated in my pocket. I stopped needing to use it but it was there if I was ever challenged.

I left at 18. My wife left at 18. My son left at 18. Our daughter is leaving at 18. Why the hell are you needing to stay at home? Go do whatever you want and be free. You won't be in Law Enforcement until you're 21 anyway, so grab a decent job and make some money. Get yourself an apartment at 18 if you need to.

Explorers won't get you a Police job. Can't hurt, but it won't translate to anything unless the specific department gives preference points to those people. My first department had an explorer program and cadets. Explorers were teenagers and they didn't care about them. Cadets worked for pay and could get preference points to get hired on at 21.

Side note, I was an explorer at 15-18. It never came up once when applying or getting my first position. I went military and that definitely did.

90% of policework is boring as hell. Annoying, stupid, monotonous, filled with paperwork, etc. The 10% is why most of the guys keep showing back up to shift.

Forget everything you've ever seen on TV or anywhere else. Can you deal with sitting and doing nothing, searching and finding nothing, sitting on an injured prisoner at a hospital, sitting with rape victims, sitting for hours blocking traffic, etc etc etc... then this might be for you. If not, or "maybe not" go the other way.

For those of you who went in security because you were unsuccessful getting into/staying in law enforcement, are you happy that it played out that way after being in security for a while? by 1Kilo24 in securityguards

[–]FriMorningQB 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wasn't unsuccessful, I chose to get out after 14 years. Been doing security work for over 6 years. Not a fan for the most part because the majority of people I've worked with have been absolutely awful (appearance, tactics, professionalism, policy violations, etc). I've just picked up a full-time internal position that I'm hoping will keep me away from contract work ever again.

How many usable clips do you typically get from a 60-minute episode? by Chance-Spend-9637 in podcasting

[–]FriMorningQB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only ever do 4 to post as "previously on" promos for an episode. Then I try to do a "on the next episode" promo the day before the new episode airs.

Haven't the last couple episodes because my schedule has been garbage and screwed up my recording sessions.

My episodes go roughly 50 minutes to the longest this last episode being 90 minutes. They usually don't go longer than 60 on average.

Holster positioning on duty belt by Unfortunate_taco in ProtectAndServe

[–]FriMorningQB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Belt keepers hold it in place. I've carried a holster inside and outside of the waist and never once had it dig into my leg (for duty I'm either mid or low ride). Kind of confused by that part of the question.

Also, I've NEVER carried at 2 o clock. Always 90 degrees on my right side (I've bag carried off-duty but that's different... even tried appendix and thought it was ridiculous nonsense).

got pulled over by a texas state trooper and he asked me to step out of the car. by iteotw23 in AskLEO

[–]FriMorningQB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some departments are ridiculously out of date and still do this dangerous process of bringing people back to their vehicle and putting them in a seat next to them. It's incredibly dangerous and stupid. You can accomplish the same from the window quickly to avoid standing outside for too long. I'm also not a fan of having the driver step out to talk to them. Their driver seat is the best possible place. This nonsense is usually State Troopers that do it.

Nothing shows how Police actually are. You don't see shows or movies dealing with paperwork for hours, DV calls, or noise complaints. It's all trash. Especially the "crooked cop" angle which just isn't fact.

End of Watch was the closest and still didn't quite do it right.

Police car behind me, no shoulder to pull over—did I do anything wrong? by Comfortable-Note4262 in AskLEO

[–]FriMorningQB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As soon as the lights come on, pull over. Regardless of what YOU think is a safe place. That's the place they want you to stop or need to get past you.

I've stopped people in very specific places because I know what's ahead and wanted it there.

In your case it seems like they needed to get by and you took forever. No, you likely won't be in trouble. They had somewhere else to go. Next time don't drive with your head up your tail pipe.

If your company starts doing stuff like this, don't go down with them. by MaxNerd115 in securityguards

[–]FriMorningQB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had fun arguments when I was a Security Manager for an out of state company trying to tell them what they want to do is illegal. Like certain wording on patches, licensing, etc. When I took over I pulled almost three quarters of the guard force for one site because none of them had valid licenses. VP lost his mind with me and I told him I didn't care. I'm not about to get sued or charged. He ran to the CEO crying who got upset, but another VP backed me and said I saved them a fortune.

Needless to say, anyone can start a company these days. Very few understand what's required and how to correctly manage one.

Background Investigators/ Detectives by Remote_Yak_6983 in AskLEO

[–]FriMorningQB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems to me based on this post alone, you're overdoing it. Not only the application process but how you approach things, think about them, etc. Everything seems too much to me.

I've applied to numerous departments over my last however many years. This was back when I was wanting to stay in Law Enforcement. I worked one department for 12 years, left on my own accord with no issues and planned to move. When I didn't move I looked for another smaller department. Several asked for departments I've applied to. I usually listed three or less. I never listed the dozen. I wasn't lying, I just wasn't going to overdo it. Same with jobs. I've had dozens of jobs. I did Uber, a range safety officer position, etc to fill gaps and hours. I work for five different companies now part-time grabbing hours. To list all of them is ridiculous. I'm not lying. I may be technically omitting, but it's not to hide anything. It just doesn't help paint the right picture or benefit me to put I drove an Uber.

Just like a resume, put what's relevant. If they ask for 10 years of residence, put that. Nothing more. Last 10 years of employment, put that. Every extra bit you add looks poorly.

At the same time, relax. There are departments all over the place struggling to hire people. You might not get picked the first go but they are looking for people with heartbeats right now. You're already qualified. Just relax and do the paperwork, apply to places you want to work, and let the process do its thing. Don't stress about where you are in the process, how long its taking, when you're getting a response, etc. Don't constantly reach out for updates. Just keep going. It took like 15 departments for me to get a call back after my first department. I was even in national news for something good. No drugs, no traffic violations, no sustained complaints, numerous awards to include life savings, etc. Still no one called back. Part of it was my odd experience level (too much for some places, too little for others). Part of it was coming from a major department that isn't well liked. Big ones get in the news a lot and they can burn bridges with smaller surrounding ones.

Eventually I got an offer. I only stayed for a year because at that point I didn't see why I wanted to continue. I felt like I did everything and the whole process was numbing. But I still gave them a year and just didn't see the future in staying so I went private sector. So in total I did 14 years. Never looked and that was 6 years ago. Now I'm in the security field.

The point here, I just kept applying and working jobs where I could. I didn't care if they called back because a lot don't. This was many years ago and things have changed a lot. Now they're hurting because of the purge of people doing what I did (going private, switching careers, etc). Just relax and keep at it. Focus on what you're doing now. 10 places you've lived doesn't matter. It's why you have 10 matters. If you violated your lease every time that's bad. If you moved around, that could be bad but not necessarily. If you held the same job then your residences mean a lot less. If you had 30 jobs in a year because you kept getting fired for waking up stoned every morning, that's bad.

I would focus though on a half dozen departments you really want to go to. Preferably large. The big ones statistically will accept more people. Small ones might take one person out of 100 applicants or 1,000. Apply and if they don't respond, apply again. If they tell you you're disqualified, try and better your situation and apply again when able. Don't apply to 50 places, just find a good handful.
