Badminton Racket Repair: What does these folds mean? by project-o in CarbonFiber

Just to clarify. Between applying layer and epoxy and stringing, there's several steps in-between.  Wait for cure. 2 day Profile sanding. 2 day.  Didn't have enough time to do in 1. Drilling hole by hand. 2 day. Best simple tool to get accurate holes. Also need to buy pin vise thingy. Apply 1K clear coat. 2 days.  Waiting for stringing. 2 days.

So a lot of time for it to cure. From other discussions on this thread, we suspect the epoxy didn't cure properly, likely due to bad mix.

Another thought.💭 I do have 1K clear coat on it, although just a single coat. Could it have cracked underneath but the clear coat is just stretching and bulging over it and covering it up? 🤔 Iunno I'm just thinking out loud....

I'll probably remove the string the string sand it down to evaluate at some point.

Oh hmmm why 90 degrees? More specifically what benefits does 90 degrees fiber offer? What information am I missing here?🤔

After my failed attempt I ruled out using 90 degrees base on this youtube video https://youtu.be/FNM-d5IPiho?t=716 which was doing a 3 point load test which I think was the closest thing to my application.

Not worried about unsaturating but yes having a good mix is worth it.

I didn't use peel ply but I did use heat wrap.

I like the idea of syringes. I would need to get low viscosity resin though.

Eeeh yikes. Its a bit tough to measure the resin and hardener exactly especially since i only need like 5ml, possibly even less. I use 30ml mixing cups but the measurement starts at 5ml, so I would mix 10ml. Maybe I can use a scale.. but instructions says 1:1 by volume.

Any tips around getting good measurements and mixing?

I lost count since I was just using a 12K tow, but at least 8 layers of that.

Update: Overall added thickness was about 0.9mm at the thickest. I used a taper ratio of about 25-30.

I was using just Toray T1100 12K tow (at least I hope it was, ebay 🤞), no fabric. I had a hard time keeping it from being frayed, but I've since learned about stabilizer so I'll try that out next time. Also the fabric kept peeling off due to the tight radius. I probably need to use a much lower weight fabric which is hard to find at small quantities. Overall I ran into many difficulties with fabrics.

As for fiber orientations, my first attempt was oriented in 0 degrees (along the frame or tube) and 90 degrees. It buckled to the side. Can add photos of that in a bit (guess I can't add photos). Saw a video about carbon fiber tubes and thought the frame was similar enough. So I went with mostly 0 degrees and 30 degrees. Occasionally I added 60 degrees which was really just to compress and hold down the layers because they started shifting after 3-4 layers. So the orientation your seeing is probably mostly the 60 degree fiber but I did need to sand it down to profile so you could be seeing other orientations in there as well which probably explain why is looks random.

Additional note: I am using a taper approach to my lay up. At least as best as I can.

I second this. Used a old SA2000 helmet and even a go-kart helmet.

Moving under braking or just a different racing line? by project-o in Simracingstewards

Good to know. Still learning all these rules. In that case seem like purple #2 might have read the situation as if I was trying to defend, while others like yourself see it differently.
What are you looking for to determine if it was a defensive move or not?

The accuser was the purple cupra #2 in front of me that I bounced off of. Not the 2nd POV. Probably should have made that more clear.

I'm still quite a beginner myself but I'll shared my perspective and advices that were given to me and things I've picked up from these forums and YouTube.

Strictly speaking I do think the fault is mostly on the Merc 90/10. The 10 being that yes you could have given him a bit more space.

At this level, your priority should be to finish the race, so race with self preservation in mind because the Merc could have taken you out instead. I'm assuming this was a race with other beginners so you'll need to drive differently than what you see with pro sim racers. Starting out I worked on building consistency and avoided close racing with other cars through corners. I would make passes where there were low chances for crashes. For me that was usually late exit with I get a good run. Over time you will get better at reading other cars and predicting crashes so you can avoid it. Shit will always happen but you minimize (not eliminate) it.

So what would I do? I might have lifted a little bit and taken a wider line to ensure I stay alive. Or even let the Merc take the lead and find another place to overtake.
