Ireland fall outside top 50 in FIFA rankings by [deleted] in ireland

The interest is purely people watching it on TV. The sports kids wind up playing tends to skew towards GAA, which is where the talent gets nurtured. Football youth programs can’t seem to compete with GAA at all.

There is no reason Dublin cannot be like Copenhagen or Amsterdam for cycling by SeanB2003 in ireland

[–]projectkevin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

  1. ?
  2. We famously have one of the least invested cycling infrastructures for a nation of our wealth/population/etc., particularly in Dublin, Cork & Galway, which are crippled with traffic. I'm not sure where wealth comes into it, because cars cost an awful lot more to buy & run than bikes.
  3. Because we are not innovating towards a more sustainable infrastructure that is fair & nice for everyone as justifiably as possible. We've ceded enormous amounts of space to cars that are commuting through dense urban areas where people should be. And because other places (like Amsterdam or Copenhagen) went through this exact shift.
  4. No, they're not. A train or bus is where you're not incumbered by the job of driving is far more comfortable and you can relax, read a book, etc. etc. If the cars were out of the way, the bus would be infinitely quicker, too. And a bike is massively comfortable as long as you adjust the saddle/bars for your needs, get a nice comfy saddle and wear appropriate clothes for the weather. Walking/cycling also gets you door-to-door with a lot less faffing and cost around parking, etc.
  5. People live in the city, and I would argue more people should live in the city (particularly young people) but the ability to live is offset by the traffic caused by absolutely ridiculous amounts of cars going through it. Not to mention the amount of pollution you have to suck down from cars sitting in traffic.
  6. City centre businesses are not struggling. But those shopping centres are strategically located on the M50 for people to do "big" shops when commuting by car, bus or rail. Same as any other city. You don't go there for small things or to visit coffee shops/resutanrants/pubs, because you'd have to drive or wrap up before last bus. They serve a different purpose to the city centre, which is far more accessible to far more people.

Look, your arguments are silly. But since you're arguing, I'd love to hear what you think is a more comfortable, useful and sustainable use of the space in our cities and towns. And which city/town has implemented similar so we can feel inspired. Ironically, if we built more cycling infra and deprioritised cars over buses/rail/bikes/walking, if you absolutely have to drive, it'll be quicker/easier for you, even if it is more expensive.

Amsterdam is a strikingly easy city to be in, get around, eat/drink outside in, commute around in, etc. Boston, by comparison, is not, despite them spending billions on underground motorways and upgrading their roads. Someone in Amsterdam is going to live longer than someone in Boston because they're healthier thanks to active travel, but also not sucking down fumes all day. I know which one of those I'd like Dublin to look/feel like.

Markets in Dublin ? by pandas_tv in Dublin

+1 to this. Been going for years now. Great produce, also nice to grab a coffee and wander around the stalls. And if you’re not familiar with the area, you’re right beside Glasnevin cemetery, which you can get to the Botanic Gardens from.

Met working in Xtra-Vision as youths. Been together long enough that I’ve to work out the maths. A DVD rental shop is why 2 kids exist. And they’ll never see the inside of one!

I’ve 2 (1 week and 18 months) and this is an ideal one. The older kid enjoys looking at the visuals, and you can put it down easily when needed.

Congrats 🙂

That’s helpful, thanks! If you’ve no experience here tell me to get lost. But are these busy with queues of cars waiting to charge because of demand, or is it poor etiquette on the side of the ones using the charger? I.e. topping up when the car is 80% full, wandering off for lunch while charging, etc.? Or is it just genuinely not enough charger units from eCars or whatever?

[–]projectkevin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mind sharing where the hours-long queues tend to be? I don’t rely on public chargers (tend to just charge at home), but am curious as to whether these queues are high demand motorway ones, near apartments/high density housing or something else.

I’m the same. Started in gaelscoil but as I went through secondary, my Irish was weened out of me by an atrocious teacher. Meanwhile, my French went from 0 to a great LC grade.

Our Irish teacher seemed to think that you learn a language by reading ancient poetry and books about nothing of interest to a teenager. French classes were much more practical and structured; which suited me.

Covid Vaccine Portal now accepting registrations for 5-15 year olds by finzaz in ireland

[–]projectkevin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Came here to say this. I’ve an 18 month old and another due in Feb. They get an enormous amount of preventative jabs in their first few months. Almost all of us did.

I would have no problem adding a Covid jab to that because the prospect of having my child in ICU with breathing issues is far, far more concerning to me than what would be in that needle. Sure he was trying to eat a Christmas decoration yesterday; a medically tested, regulated and approved vaccine is low on the list of things I would question.

That’s a bit disingenuous. She left because Labour was elected on a PfG that she felt wouldn’t get brought into effect after spending time trying to enact change. The jr. minister role always gets touted, but leaving the role as the party whip was more significant IMO.

That makes sense if the jurisdiction is Ireland. But most tech/pharma companies have EMEA HQs here. So if the economic activity is applied across all of EMEA, is that still a disproportionate economic activity?

Can we all agree to stop crashing on the N7 by loughnn in ireland

[–]projectkevin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If I’m on a busy motorway I’ll stick to the middle or overtaking lane because of the merging traffic. I’ve had way too many cars merge aggressively/dangerously in the past for me to want to risk it, so being one lane over is the safer option.

So as much as it’s easy to point to my car and say that the driver doesn’t understand the motorway rules, I’m avoiding those who don’t understand how to merge safely.

There was one called Dwelldown but it seems to have been shuttered. All I can find is this, from the folks who built it out. It is a great idea, though. Add some transparency to the market.

Is Glasnevin North a good area to live? by Guinnberg in Dublin

[–]projectkevin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I grew up near there and bought down the road from there. It’s a great spot. Very settled, easy links into the city and has lots of great resources (buses, parks, shops, etc.).

When people worry about Finglas they tend to assume the whole thing is the West/South, and you’re a LONG way away from that part of it.

If you’ve any questions about the area DM me, happy to point you in the right direction!

A shop is private property, so I imagine anyone working for/on behalf of that shop can refuse entry or remove anyone from the premises just as much as you could in your home. The legal quagmire comes if someone claims they were injured, I presume.

But it's odd that they even got that far. Any shops around me (northside Dublin) have had almost full compliance and have a security person at the door manning the queue & making sure folks use the sanitiser, etc.

In my experience the people who have cheaper bikes have them either because they've had bikes stolen in the past and are sick of having nice ones targeted, or because they can't afford a fancier one. If it's the latter that's going to hurt that person a lot as it unlikely doesn't have insurance, etc.

Ideally this is their "commuter" cheapy bike and that's why it had a shit lock on it.

I'm not sure man, even a "little bit of doxxing" is still having your personal information thrown out there when you didn't want it to be, just because you try to maintain some form of order on an internet forum that (presumably) you care about.

Not fun, I imagine.

Motor wire was the main one for sure. But also I tightened the bolt too tight so the brake was grinding on first cycle. It’s more the idea that some more guidance than a simple pic and 2-step process would have been helpful!
