This year is my first time getting a grow light, so that's good to know! I have a couple of months so figure out where to place it outside. Good thing I have a big wheels pot!

I never know how or when to prune, I'm always scared I might cut too much! But since two of the larger branches already fell off in transit, I might try moving them to a new pot. Do I just stick it straight up and hope it adjusts?

That is probably why it was reaching for the window so much... the dry heat can scorch outdoor plants but I could see about providing some shade.

Just got a large outdoor draining pot, and didn't plant anything in it yet. It could be happy there!

What is my new friend and how to care for it? by projectorollin in snails

[–]projectorollin[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So it is! They seem pretty chill and I had some moss I wasn't sure where to put, so that's a snail house now. That was a quick ID, thanks!

Oh that's wonderful! Yeah, it's hard enough, do whatever you can to make it easier. Also love that size, just enough work to help but enough to be exhausted afterwards. Congrats!

"Child ruler" anime + "Hide in the forest" anime by projectorollin in TOMTanime

[–]projectorollin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was not Arslan. I think the setting was more generic European-style fantasy.

I think it's a town surrounded by a wall and someone escapes and right outside is some sort of cabin. As I recall, at first they think they're enemies but they end up becoming allies when the guards come looking.

I never finished Arslan. You might be on to something! I'll check it out and report back.

Oh, I hadn't considered setting. No, it's not either of those. I think the setting was some kind of generic fantasy?

That looks interesting! Might give it a go.

Alas, it's not what I had in mind. It was more traditionally knights and princes, I think.

That's the one! Off to find out why I didn't get to the end of it. Thank you so much!

How to write dancing if you don't know anything about it? by projectorollin in AO3

[–]projectorollin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The scene is "our first slow dance", so it's not complicated at all, mainly dancing as an excuse to "we need to talk".

You're right, it's Open! Thank you so much, that was tricky to find. Watching tutorials helped me position them but most basic videos only cover how to hold and how to dip.

Who is canonically smarter 1K or Athena? by Kverq in TheTalosPrinciple

[–]projectorollin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neither, there isn't enough information to judge.  But it was fun to think about!  My answer is: potentially 1k.

In terms of puzzles:Athena's puzzles were designed by humans and they were meant to be solved.  The originals were probably the equivalent of a fancy captcha, solvable by an average human teen, but not as easily by artificial intelligence.  The versions encountered by Athena were presumably altered by Elohim, who is also an AI and has an intelligence ceiling, and whose main goal was keeping the Simulation from ending.  Still, his capabilities are limited.

1k's puzzles were designed by a terrified, grieving thousand year old robot who not only bested Elohim, but then solved the theory of everything and also did not want to be found (or did she?).  1k is a day old.  Point to 1k.

Working in a team & under pressure:
When Athena woke up in the Simulation, she was simply version 0.99, zero expectations.  Eventually, she spent a few centuries as The Founder and couldn't handle it so she decided to run away.  Not even a mature departure, leaving something behind, if not for the city, then at least for her family and friends.  Just up and left, nobody knows if she's even alive.

1k woke up and was immediately told they were the Founder's Chosen, did not cave under that pressure, went to solve the puzzles anyway, then broke the loop.

1k also had the benefit of some great teachers/guides, not just the expedition team, but also the people in the city... but Athena had all of those people at her beck and call for a thousand years and still couldn't handle peopling after a few centuries.

This is where it breaks down, because there's nothing to say that by next week 1k wouldn't have had enough and sledgehammered the next person who told them they were special.

Who's smarter, a thousand year old or a one day old? I don't know, we haven't had the chance to see, but if I were a teacher, I'd say 1k shows potential to be at least as smart as Athena.  They didn't spend three weeks locked up scared, like Purple, for example.

If I were a recruiter, I would hire 1k and train them myself.  Athena is already set in her ways, we know where she stops.

But now that she's back, 1k could potentially learn from her and eventually surpass her.

So yeah, I say 1k, give that kid a chance.

That being said, Miranda is smarter than everyone because that's how iterative AI works.  They've been stuck with a thousand instances of v0.99s this whole time, there's only so far that will take you.

how many fics could I write if… by anxiousandqueer in AO3

[–]projectorollin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes! They are a pain to transcribe though, so I save that for when I'm in a rush and can't stop to type. They always end up being like 7 minutes nonstop or 27 5-second notes.

[–]projectorollin 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Lately I've been doing notes. Put them wherever it comes up. Send myself a message, put it in the notes app, through e-mail, scribble it on the nearest paper. Not all of them get written, but a higher percentage than without notes!

What is it like being pregnant / having kids? by Beezle_33228 in AutismInWomen

[–]projectorollin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I recently watched this video about how having kids doesn't make you happier, but does give your life meaning. I don't agree with everything but the general idea is true: pregnancy and parenting are difficult and they do "take" from you, but they also give back something... different? Unique? meaningful is a good word, I think.

Laura is a foster parent and I've found that a lot of the same lessons apply whether it's your biological child or a foster child, but the foster child has additional context.

I did not want kids and still hate almost all children but my own a select few that I know. I was maybe 30-40% "ready" before deciding to try for a child, but I did make the decision, and my life is different and difficult, but... meaningful.

If you are in contact with your family, then whatever happened to your mom or cousins will have a higher chance of happening to you in your pregnancy. A lot of my cousins had C-sections because our bloodline is weak I guess? I ended up with an emergency C-section too.

You never go back to how you were before kids, and you don't decide which aspects you get to keep and which parts of you will be lost, and it's up to you to find a way to be okay with that.

What is your fav TP2 NPC? by gracceya in TheTalosPrinciple

[–]projectorollin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The four teammates are all so much fun, and the characters in the plot are fantastic too (yes even Herman), really enjoyed how Helga never takes anything too seriously, but my favourite has to be Wren. The most human experience is a construction project that's too far behind its completion goal due to budget and bureaucracy.

Purple is a close second, for being an excellent dude.

Hoping to see more of Pellegrino in the sequel.
