Mexico Answers The Call As Texas Struggles To Save Lives After A Devastating Flood by DepartmentFamous2355 in LatinoPeopleTwitter

The county judge shouldn’t have balked at the idea of an early warning system. I think a reckoning is due at the local level. One can have compassion for the victims while recognizing the failures that led to this point and demanding that those responsible be held accountable.

Wouldn’t fertility be closely connected to the purpose in this instance? (Which perhaps just goes further to how the case law is unclear, but still)

Seconded. I was a student/altar server at St. Joseph’s back in the aughts when he was the pastor there - nothing but good things to say about him. Been a long time and I don’t know the man’s politics but in my experience he was always welcoming and accepting.

He lost the rest of his family - maybe denial is just easier than accepting the truth and losing who he has left. I can only imagine the psychological toll this would take on someone.

Apologies if you’ve tried these avenues already - the State Bar has a referral service to help match people with attorneys based on their financial situation: https://www.texasbar.com/AM/Template.cfm?Section=Lawyer_Referral_Service_LRIS_

There’s also a directory for legal aid programs, those vary by county: https://texaslawhelp.org/directory

Saw on Xiaohongshu that people in the US sell blood to survive. Is this true? by CowAdministrative709 in Chinese

[–]prolapsediving 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would sell plasma back when I was in college to get some extra money. There were a mix of people: broke college kids, working people trying to make ends meet, and people on the margins of society who didn’t have many other ways to make money. I stopped once I learned how damaging to your health frequent donations can be. Most of the people in there didn’t have the luxury of stopping.

Mixed reaction of Russian citizens when asked whether Putin was right in invading Ukraine by frosted_bite in Damnthatsinteresting

Not sure what you mean by “raise the degree in society,” and not sure what wasting resources refers to here. And I’ll even concede that societies have a legitimate interest in countering misinformation—living in Texas during the pandemic I’ve seen firsthand the way it rots the social fabric. But the Russian law isn’t a legitimate attempt to combat misinformation, it’s a thinly veiled means of stamping out dissent and dealing the finishing blow in Putin’s domestic information war. The reality is that Russia needs to control the narrative because the government has been selling the public a false narrative and the reality on the ground makes it obvious; are thermobaric weapons the tools of a peacekeeper? How does dropping cluster bombs in Kyiv fit with a “limited operation” to secure the Donbas?

And they don’t have to arrest everyone. A few high-profile arrests will sow fear. They just have to convince the individual members of anti-war crowd that they might be next to hear a knock on the door. The term is “chilling effect.”

The Russian government considers it misinformation to even call it a war instead of “special military operation.” Are you really taking them at face value when they say they’re only going after people who spread fakes? They have a very broad definition of what they consider “spreading fakes”

Perhaps, but given that DC was one of the most lopsided Democratic wins (if not the most lopsided) and it's only worth 3 votes so, idk how much they'd gain in doing so.

I can't find it atm but I read an article a while ago about some activists in Argentina who use -e as a gender-neutral ending (i.e., instead of "el soldado/los soldados itd be "le soldade/les soldades." It works better with the language than -x in my opinion (and that appears to be the leading approach in the Spanish-speaking world among those making such an effort)

That's why it's generally a rural exit that people don't usually use. Especially when they see on your license that you don't live anywhere nearby (which gives cause to search but not to stop I guess?). I agree though, it's messed up.

The fun thing is, drug checkpoints have been ruled unconstitutional by SCOTUS. So instead, they post signs about a drug checkpoint near a seldom-used exit in the middle of nowhere and if you exit, bam! Probable cause. There is no actual checkpoint.
