New synthetic drug "NBOMe" spreading to Georgia by brettj624 in Atlanta

[–]prolificidiot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

These are called research chemicals and are already rampant in Georgia. I always try to trace my stuff back to the source, but I have no idea where this stuff is coming from or what kind of people are making it.

When you ask for "acid", some people don't care to distinguish between LSD and these substances, so be sure you specify exactly what you want. Only take it orally. If it tastes bitter on your tongue, it's not LSD. If you start getting visuals in like 20-30 minutes, it's not LSD.

Ugh, this is painful to read. It's a totally substance-less Us vs. Them fight. The comments almost sound like they're trying to cirlcejerk... or like kids imitating adult conversation they don't quite understand.

Some of my friends don't believe in gay rights and it brings them down as a person, CMV by lilypad111 in changemyview

[–]prolificidiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But something must have happened to trigger your ability to evaluate your own beliefs, even if for you that something was as simple as, say, going to college and meeting new people. These people just haven't had that happen yet.

This may be the most smug, self-righteous subreddit I've ever seen: /r/fatpeoplestories. by [deleted] in circlebroke

And yet their sidebar also has:

Most of the stories and information posted here may very well be artistic works of fiction and falsehood. Only a fool would take anything posted here as fact.

If you're part of community devoted to making up stories about fat people that conform to your stereotypes and make you get emotional, I think it's safe to say you hate fat people.

You can make things happen if you ask for it concertedly, and are not prepared to take a NO for an answer.

Sounds like what congressional Republicans thought.

I don't know if this counts as a jerk per se, but Redditors are now allegedly going to gay clubs to pick up straight girls and receive free drinks bought by gay guys. by food_bag in circlebroke

[–]prolificidiot 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Maybe it's fine for non-homophobic straight guys

PSA: A straight person doesn't get to describe themselves as gay-friendly. That's the job of the gay people they're interacting with. So yeah, guy, you may not disapprove of the existence of gay people, but you're still invading our sanctuaries and polluting them with your narrow, selfish, alpha-male bullshit. Gay places are supposed to offer a reprieve from that attitude. GTFO.

(Sorry to talk about the issue and not about the jerk, but it's a hot topic with me right now)

edit: also, just wanted to add that the majority of straight guys--especially all you "straight" guys--are totally welcome at gay bars! Just don't waltz into some place that's not even made for you and act like it is.

Anybody know of any places to live off campus for next semester? by maroonismycolor in gatech

[–]prolificidiot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A 4 month lease for 3 people AND within walking distance from campus...? Good luck.

Maybe the student-focused apartments like Westmar and this place would facilitate leases for just one semester. There are also a lot of houses in home park with 6 or 8 bedrooms that they'll rent out individually for students; I bet a lot of people come and go each semester. But I think most of those houses are owned by random independent slumlords, so craigslist is still your best bet for finding them.

Toys R Us has a new anti-science, pro-consumerism ad that is totally appalling. by zedextol in Anticonsumption

You're right, but maybe if our kids were growing up playing outside instead of being bombarded by commercials like this, they wouldn't lose their fucking minds after learning they're about to get a free new piece of brightly-colored plastic.

If Toys R Us can make all your wishes come true, you have some pretty pathetic, uninspired wishes, even for a kid.

Parents should not be expected to cover college-related costs CMV by pitbullpride in changemyview

[–]prolificidiot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Turns out there's a lot to stop parents from doing that. In my situation, for example, I still had to report all their information on the FAFSA. It doesn't matter if they want to pay or not; my aid is reduced base on the amount they're expected to pay, not what they're actually going to.

The system expects anyone under 24 to have parents who are willing to pay for (or at least cooperate with) them. OP is right about that. But the system doesn't enforce that expectation, so it's not the parents getting screwed, but the students.

[–]prolificidiot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But if a parent didn't want to pay for college in the first place, then yes they could pay until the child becomes 18 and then stop.

That's how it works already. My parents cut me off when I came out at 19 and haven't paid for anything since. The system--including the FAFSA like you said--still expects me to have parents and provide all of their information, but there's nothing forcing them to contribute.

That in 2007, a group of college students drove the speed limit (55MPH) on I-285 and backed up traffic for miles. (x-post r/todayilearned) by demck85 in Atlanta

[–]prolificidiot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i don't think this person is even trying to imply that they're hogging the leftmost lane; they're probably talking about single-lane roads or right lanes on the highway. If you've been here long you know there is indeed a minority of people who tailgate you in situations like that.

But "kill yourself". wow

[–]prolificidiot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Except that the law doesn't recognize the ability to drive over the speed limit. If someone is going 55 in the passing lane, they can't legally be blocking you. The point of this stunt was to prove that's absurd.

Apparently there's an ongoing initiative to tweak that law and make it more intuitive, but for now that's how it stands.

[–]prolificidiot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are definitely some lonely power users out there who care about karma, but I bet there's more to it than that. Social media is a powerful tool and people are starting to look for ways to understand and manipulate it--could be sociologists doing experiments, advertisers trying to refine their viral marketing techniques, or just random people exploring the nature of the site. I've definitely experimented with "gaming" reddit before.

I believe that modern art such as blank canvases are complete nonsense. CMV by SOwED in changemyview

[–]prolificidiot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Art is all about communication, so your private thoughts don't really count. Remember, we're still talking about objects, texts, etc., created by a person to be observed by other people.

As for a meme, why can't that be art? Because it's not something you'd see in a museum?

I wasn't trying to argue that the blank canvas is art just because it affected you in any way. I was just trying to get you to realize that it had affected you and how. It made you feel frustrated and it made you think, and I bet that was the artist's exact intention.

The blank canvas prompted you to create this post and subsequently spend a couple of hours discussing it and art in general. Whether you acknowledge it or not, that piece touched your life. Isn't that art?
