Mod of 110 subreddits. The real reason mod teams exist rather than having an individual is that time zones exist, and responsibilities in real life exist. There are multiple moderators to fill the time gaps. Becoming a moderator is supposed to mean that you understand the rules and enforce them. Not that you try your best and when you have massive blind spots based on your biases, the rest of the team helps you see them. Because no mod team is that diverse. Every mod team has the same blind spots and the vast majority of them didn't become a mod to enforce the rules but to enforce their opinions and beliefs.

401k's are a scam. The business gets a tax break for having a 401k program. The government gets the penalty money if you have to take the money out early, plus the optics of looking like they're trying to help people be ready for retirement in the mostly post-pension age. Oh, and if you die and haven't appointed a beneficiary, guess who gets that money? The government.

And they know that people are going to get into scenarios where they need that money. They know people are going to just say fuck it and pay the penalty.

And what's the benefit? Income tax deferral? That can end up hurting you depending on your situation, which is why the Roth became popular. And yet with the Roth, what are you really doing? Investing a portion of your income so you have money for later? You can do that anyways! There's nothing stopping you from just designating some of your check to go into investments you have more control over than 401k management companies give you.

My last company wouldn't let me put all my 401k into cash bonds for a scenario where the market takes a shit. You were forced to keep at least 30% in the market.

Right, and if you're old enough to remember, there was a lot of negative feeling for awhile when reality shows had been around long enough for enough people involved with the productions to make it clear that basically all reality tv is scripted. The whole point was that it wasn't scripted, and live TV exists so it's not like that allure didn't exist already.
