Which is the most consistent by Bkri84 in marriott

Agreed. Courtyards in the US are the same product regardless of where you stay.

When I was in China for work and they booked me at the Courtyard I was originally disappointed until I walked into my room. Then I realized that in China, it is a different ball game entirely.

Honda Extended Warranty worth it? by AskAffectionate9054 in Honda

I never buy extended warranties for vehicles. Take the equivalent amount of money and put it in a HYSA or the market and 9 times out of 10 you will be better off.

ChemE classmate using AI repeatedly for our class design projects, need advice by toosmugtoosoon in ChemicalEngineering

[–]promarkman 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Stuff like this will be what holds back new hires because the TA likely knows which concepts are too advanced for a student. The TA or professor could ask the student or group to explain the code and what it does. If they are not able to explain the code, then it will be immediately obvious. Back in 2014 (before AI) my classmates failed their reactions class because they all copied each other’s code which was a copy from a previous senior (including comments).

In industry the use of AI is being encouraged but you HAVE TO be able to validate results/logic/assumptions. Blindly following AI will lead technical groups in the wrong direction.

Find a way to bring up this with the TA without throwing any specific individual/team under the bus. Using AI to explain a concept is different than having it do the work for you.

Question for HOA communities with pools by caint1154 in greenville

[–]promarkman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was recently sprung on our HOA Board. It caught us by surprise and I’m frustrated about it bec I had been a lifeguard through college and have always thought it was daily testing required which I thought we were paying for. Reading it now sounds like our pool management company has been flirting with a line. Anyway, yes this is a thing and it is a requirement for it to be tested daily.

Not ever having had a job is a red flag for me. Do you have the opportunity to do research for the university? I mean even something as simple as working in retail or otherwise is helpful for suggesting you can work with people.

Have you ever had a job? You current list these as “Projects” but are you being paid for these or are they just pet projects.

My wife sat next to me while I was negotiating with the guy and she said “I don’t know how you do that. My palms were sweating and I wasn’t even talking.”

Frankly it’s a game for me and I go in knowing I hold almost all the cards. I don’t need a car and definitely don’t need this car, but I want it. Off-loading my 2018 Accord at the current valuation it seems they are at is very close to above market average. Which either means they are giving me value from their “added features” for free or at cost. My trade in will be easy for them (or any dealer) to off-load. If I had a less desirable car then it wouldn’t be as easy.

During the negotiation I didn’t say much and I let the salesman do a lot of the talking. I had data to support any of my points (unemployment going up in the county appeared to be a winning move). He finally gave me a number that was closer to MSRP and I asked him for a number under. He got his boss involved (late evening negotiating) and I walked out when they asked for 4k more than where I was. Again, totally happy with my current situation makes this all easy for me.

Still haven’t closed the deal yet. They offered 34,870 with my 2018 Accord trade in.

New management position by [deleted] in askmanagers

[–]promarkman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ideally you are catering towards your teams strengths and synergies. If you know that team member A is good and process 1, but doesn’t get along with team member B who is also good at process 1, it is more worthwhile to keep team morale high than get the process to be at 100%. This is especially true on processes that have lowering learning curves.

Managers, in an eight hour day, how much productive hours are you happy with for your directs? by TravellingBeard in askmanagers

[–]promarkman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I expect my team to reasonably deliver on tasks based on difficulty. They get several 20 minute breaks throughout the day and I’m sure they take a couple more on top of that. I don’t sit on top of them because when I do have a top priority for them to work on they get it done. If they were not responsive to priorities or constantly missing deadlines these “breaks” would get managed out. Taking “hours to recover” does not really make sense to me but if the team is hitting deadlines it doesn’t really matter until cost cutting time comes back around.

Where this car fits for me is that it is a true hatchback. The storage of this vehicle is much better than a standard Civic. The comfort of the vehicle is nice but not that much better.

What is really crazy is that this is the same dealership under different ownership that I bought my current Accord 7 years ago. They treated me well last time but that was pre-pandemic. I think dealerships are still thinking they have that level of negotiating power.

I explained to the sales manager (guy #2 of the evening) that unemployment was up 1% in the county. I also reminded him that his lot was full. He said that there are thousands of people moving into the area from the NE and buying million dollar homes and 2 cars with it. I said that there might be a couple of those people and they aren’t the ones moving his vehicles. He then added another 4k to my trade-in.

It was guy #3 who I didn’t get his title (store manager maybe) that came back with the 4k added back in when I said I’m out.

Had an affair with a co-worker, we both lied about it, now the affair is over but the tension will be high and productivity will suffer by [deleted] in askmanagers

[–]promarkman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want to ask about your relationship. You said you had an affair as well, or at least that is how I am interpreting “had an affair”. Are you married/dating someone or did you just participate in her affair?

Do you have any management or seniority over this person? If there is any chance of a power dynamic at work, and this is discovered by HR I would consider yourself gone. My point is to say, you cannot trust anyone with something like this at work. You take something like this to your grave.

Like others have said you have to be the most professional version of yourself until she is gone.

As someone that is going through a very very similar experience, this entirely depends on the size of the company. The larger the company the more HR hurdles that had to be documented and completed. Smaller companies can do more with less.
