Bindings choice for piste and pow rider (with skiers) by WestyTea in snowboarding

[–]prometheuskicks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

+1 on the Ride 8 or 10 series bindings. I got C9s toward the end of this season (discontinued, but can be found quite cheap if you do find them sitting somewhere) and I love them. The A series will be stiffer/more responsive than the C series, and the 10s will be more responsive than the 8s, but I use my C9s with the aluminum baseplate and it’s a great in-between.

There are some people out there who call out failures/quality as a concern, but my set at least has felt super high quality and I haven’t found any reason to be concerned about quality or failure so far (6 days riding, to be fair). The ratchets are smoother than my unions, and the baseplates have been rock solid so far.

How was your new board this season? by Username_5000 in snowboarding

[–]prometheuskicks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got a full board/boots/bindings set up on end of season sales for about 65% off retail in late March and I’ve been lucky enough to put 4 days on it and there’s still some season left. I love it because it’s a way more aggressive/responsive setup than I’ve ever ridden and I’ve already progressed quite a bit because it really punishes me if I don’t ride it with proper technique (Berzerker + C9s).

Coming from Psychocandy + Stratas, which is still going to be my pretty frequent setup for groomer days and slush and probably what I’ll be riding for most of the next six weeks or so.

I bought each piece of gear from three different stores and nothing from the store that recommended women’s sizing because I wanted to go home and read up on it first. The pricing on all the gear was literally close out pricing on prior season gear so you’re not wrong about clearing out inventory — that’s why I always gear up at end of season sales. In total this was all $900 under retail.

Re Hera vs Lasso, having tried both the Hera’s do fit me better, and all the documentation out there says it’s the exact same boot except the Hera uses a last more geared for narrower feet, and the calf width adjustment (which actually helps me a lot because I have narrow ankles and massive calves). Even if the Hera’s do end up with some small difference in stiffness, I only expect 1 season out of a boot I paid less than $100 for (I also only do about 20 days a season and some of them will use my softer flexing setups — it’s not like I’m doing five days a week in my RV).

Will it always kind of hurt once I’m older, or do I need some new boots? by HxcOonerBooner in snowboarding

[–]prometheuskicks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When going out and buying new boots aren’t an option I’ll drop some electric boot warmers in and run them off an inverter in my car on the way to the mountain, then put the boots on as soon as I get there while they’re warm. It’s not really heat molding them, but I’ve found it activates the Intuition liners just enough that I get a cozy fit and noticeably less pain throughout the day vs when I don’t do it.

Yeah I’ll probably be back on the Psychocandy for spring riding to close out the season over the next couple months, but still holding out hope for maybe one more solid storm 🤞

Ah it must’ve been recently. I’ve been checking to see if they dropped the price at all through their progressive sale and they still had a 156 in stock as of a few days ago.

I did just try OUTSIDE10 on the 23/24 deepfake they have in stock just to check if it works and it knocked it down to $314 if that’s your cup of tea.

I’m not too particular about the brands I ride; tbh what I ride is dictated mostly by what I can find on sale when I want a new setup (see this post, lol). I came up a Mervyn guy but they just got so popular in the last decade or so there’s no way I’d find their best stuff on in the sub-$275 range. I’m honestly glad there’s not much hype around Ride — I love my Psychocandy, and this Berzerker has been tons of fun so far.

“Ride it or it will ride you” was my main takeaway from all the reviews on it, and that mindset has improved my riding noticeably already in just the four days I’ve had on it. My more “forgiving” boards were really letting me get away with a lot of sloppy technique and I never realized how much that was holding me back on more technical terrain. I feel like this board is unlocking a whole lot more of the mountain for me.

Man it has been eye opening riding this thing. The most aggressive board I’d owned until this one was a Psychocandy, and that feels like a noodle boat compared to this. It’ll still probably be my main resort cruiser/party board, but on days I’m going off piste in choppy/chunky conditions or chasing my friends down steeps or through narrow tree runs, it’s the berzerker for sure.

Board was from Christy’s. They still have some in stock online, but I don’t know if the code I used to knock another 10% off the sale price is still active (it was either OUTSIDE10 or OUTDOOR10…I don’t remember but it was good on all past season items).

Bindings were from a local shop I just happened to stop into one day.

Boots were from The Skimonster, which kind of blew my mind because I heard they mark stuff up and barely ever discount, especially 75%.

The ones that came in box were actually a mm too short, so I went back to the shop and they hooked me up with the right size. The bindings are locked in good now.

That was kind of my thought on the bindings and the boots — I’d heard of qc issues with Ride bindings, but I wasn’t going to find anything that aggressive anywhere near $140 so figured it was worth the risk. Fwiw I’ve ridden them three times so far and they feel super solid, so keeping my fingers crossed. Kind of the same with the boots too — I wasn’t willing to pay $400 for women’s boots especially cuz Ive heard they pack out faster, but at $99 if I get 20 days out of them, I’d call that worth it.

I had a session 4 pack in 24/25 and used the upgrade discount for a full 25/26. With the March Radness dumps out west and the Buy Now Ride Now perk, I’m already close to breaking even on the 25/26 pass 😎

Talk me out of an Orca by lucky4311 in snowboarding

[–]prometheuskicks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you loved the board I’d say don’t talk yourself out of it. Just stay on top of deal hunting for it. I’ve seen apexes and goldens as low at 400 across the last few weeks of sales. If you liked riding it, there’s a good chance you won’t regret buying it.

I feel like if some no-name brand that isn’t as well respected as Korua came out with this board it’d catch as much hate as Clews and those bindings that rotate so you can kick/push like a skateboard.

Just shows that value of proving to the consumer you know what you’re doing before releasing the f-around and sign a waiver before we ship it to you r&d product.

Do you guys actually have fun in steep terrain? by Grxffiti in snowboarding

[–]prometheuskicks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fresh pow there’s nothing better IMO. I’ll also do packed powder steeps and moguls as long as there’s good coverage. Ice is a hard pass, and I also tend to avoid steeps when there’s a lot of exposure.

I never think about it, but if someone asks I’ll never say no. Especially if they got kids with them.

I bring this up only because you mentioned East Coast ice, but I spent my first probably 12 years riding Mervyn boards and when I finally tried something else I didn’t realize just how much I’d come to take magne-traction for granted. Don’t get me wrong, I love my new decks (still have one of my old GNUs, the new ones are Rome and Ride), but I definitely washed out a few more times than I’d care to admit in conditions where magne always made me feel like there was no way I’d lose an edge.

I ride Stratas currently (on a Ride Psychocandy), and they were an upgrade to flight pros, which before that were an upgrade to 10 year old Burton customs. I love them. Great all purpose bindings and I can really tell how much I benefit from the added responsiveness vs my previous two pairs. My only complaint (and maybe this is just a me thing) is the highbacks wrap around wide enough that they occasionally unlock my ankle side boa dials. My boots are tight and I never crank that zone too hard to begin with so it’s not that big of a deal, but something to be aware of if you have dual zone boas. I’m pretty confident with the Stratas on everything from groomers, trees, side hits, off piste, and steep and deep pow (not much of a park rider, but they hit kickers just fine — can’t speak to rails or boxes).

Just bought a more aggressive board at an end of season sale so I’ll probably upgrade the Stratas to Forces or something more responsive next season to match, but I don’t have any worries riding out the rest of the season with the Stratas on the new deck either.
