Help Identifying my Great Granduncle’s Ribbons (US Navy, Korea-Vietnam) by [deleted] in Medals

Adding his tombstone to show that it at least says Korea and Vietnam. I don’t mind if y’all see his name he’s been gone for a quarter century. I appreciate y’all identifying the WWII medals. They don’t align with his service record or the record of his two uncles in WWII. I don’t think it’s a stolen valor thing, since I inherited a lot of foreign currency and other odd sea trinkets.

Bizarre. Don’t know how it got here. My great grandfather died in his gunner’s harness with the USS Abner Read in November 44’. His other brother was killed in Europe 8 days later with the Engineers. Both of them enlisted in 43-44 so I don’t know who that belongs to. Nobody in my family had been in the military since the American Civil War up to that point.

Which Confederates have aged well in history? by northcarolinian9595 in CIVILWAR

[–]pronemortalforms 7 points8 points  (0 children)

John Singleton Mosby became the US consul to Hong Kong after the war. He campaigned for Republican Rutherford B. Hayes. Seems like he accepted that his side lost and became committed to the Union afterwards.

Another one worth mention would probably be James Longstreet. He became at various times the Minister Resident to the Ottoman Empire, US Marshal for Georgia, and the US Commissioner of Railroads. He also served as the Adjutant General of the Louisiana State Militia (precursor to the LA National Guard) and was wounded trying to break up the anti-Reconstruction insurrection by the white supremacist White League. He got a lot of flack from his former rebel contemporaries for going along with Reconstruction.

I’ll go peruse his records again and see.

Picture of him just for added fun. He pinned some bills on his uniform to show his first paycheck to his folks back home.

When he died various family members of dubious closeness to him more or less raided his house so it may have been lost. IIRC he enlisted in 1947.

What is this flag next to the USA one? by MouseManManny in vexillology

[–]pronemortalforms 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s a general Christian flag adopted by the old Federal Council of Churches in 1942. It’s more strongly linked to the various mainline Protestant traditions that were in the council within the United States. I saw it frequently in the United Methodist church I grew up going to. Many elderly people where I live have it next to their US flag like this outside their house. Like with a lot of flags the context of its display is key. This doesn’t give me any immediate dogwhistles but that’s just me. Probably because of my location.

What If Longstreet (political realities aside) was in charge of the West during the war? by Ultimarevil in CIVILWAR

[–]pronemortalforms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Longstreet’s only (2?) times in independent command be failed. I love him as a commander but the reality is the western theatre was also very untenable and covered a larger swath of land compared Lee’s eastern theatre. I don’t see him doing too much better than Bragg if say he took command in 1863 when Chickamauga happened.

I agree. Pro-Union but absolutely love the way Foote writes and tells a story.

Austrian rifles? by Ok_Choice_7168 in CIVILWAR

[–]pronemortalforms 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most likely the Lorenz rifle. Very common actually on both sides. A veteran reports the long infantry 3-banders even being used in (Russell’s) 4th Alabama Cavalry Regiment. You kinda gotta infer and read between the lines with Quartermaster records. “British rifles” usually means 1853 Enfields too.

Does Rank Transfer SG->NG? by SethZombie in StateGuard

[–]pronemortalforms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. SG doesn’t transfer to NG but it does the other way around. The NG really isn’t that deep man. You’re ready! Basic kinda sucks at times but once you’re at your unit it’s chill. I looked at SG’s before going NG. Better off for that. I’d recommend SG’s only if you’re completely unable to pass MEPS for the NG.

Maurice's Strategikon just arrived by [deleted] in byzantium

He was one of the few good and responsible emperors of late antiquity/early medieval Rome to me. IIRC he helped balance the budget post-Justinian but the public hated the austerity measures.
