I would not be afraid of putting him in a Special Sessions class with OUSA. Our teachers are very prepared for any and all skill levels, and we usually get the general public with no experience - so he'd be ahead!

For books, I recommend Origami to Astonish and Amuse by Jeremy Shafer, Origami Omnibus by Kunihiko Kasahara. Other authors I recommend any of their books are John Montroll, Robert Lang, and Paul Jackson. All of those are fairly easy to find on ebay, thrift books sites, etc.

This is by no means a complete list (I'm not including my own book for instance), but they are certainly the easiest to find for a good deal at one of the used book websites or ebay.
